Research Notes

  • Be careful with merging slaves. Since Nathaniel was sometimes giving away more than one person with the same name in the same document, it would be a mistake to merge these individuals.
  • Birthdate for those designated as children is at before the date of the document, e.g. before 15 Jul 1789
  • Birthdate for those not designated as children is set at before 15 years before the date of the document, e.g., 15 Jul 1789 minus 15 years, thus before 21 Jul 1774
  • Birth location is assumed to be the location of the signing of the document, Halifax County, Virginia

11 children are connected to him, but only 9 are mentioned in his Will. Where did John come from? If the youngest daughter is Suckey, then that probably is Susanna. Does that mean Letty is Susan? Oh, I also altered the list of slaves by inserting who they went to from the Will and created a Slave page.

Finally found the ref to his service - updated his 1776 sticker to show Civil Service.

As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by Nathaniel Barksdale on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
Barksdale-638 and Barksdale-12 appear to represent the same person because: Birth and death dates on-638 are wild, incorrect guesses. Same spouse (will set dupes for merge), child on -638 born in same place as children on -12. Please merge using Vitals from -12.

Hi! I did a quick search at DAR for American Revolution involvement in Virginia and turned up no results for Nathaniel Barksdale.

I tried searching in NC, too, since Halifax isn't very far from NC, and also turned up no results. http://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/default.cfm I
