Mary Branch was born on June 1, 1660 in Henrico County, in the English colony of Virginia. Her parents were Christopher Branch Jr. and his wife Sarah (Almond) Branch. The family were "ancient planters" of gentry-level social status in the English colony of Virginia.
“Judith Jefferson’s grandmother Mary Branch descended from one of the oldest families in Abingdon, Berkshire, England. Her grandfather Christopher Branch [Sr.], who [had] emigrated to Virginia in March 1620, was a planter of Arrowhattock on the James River, Henrico [County], Southside. He was a neighbor of the Jeffersons, Farrars, and a number of related families living on Swift Creek…His will…names “granddaughter Mary Branch, wife of Thomas Jefferson,” who was executor of his will.”[1]
Mary's marriage to Thomas Jefferson Sr. occurred before the death of her grandfather Christopher Branch Sr. in 1678, as Thomas Jefferson was mentioned in his will. In fact, Jefferson was his Executor.[2] It is said they married in 1677 at Jefferson's Curles plantation, Henrico Co., Virginia.
Thomas Jefferson and Mary (Branch) Jefferson had three children:[3]
After her first husband’s death in November 1697,[3] Mary married Joseph Maddox (aka Mattox) of Charles City County on 1 April 1701 (License dated 27 Feb. 1701).[4][5][6] The couple apparently had a prenuptial agreement wherein, if Joseph predeceased her, Mary would get half of Maddox's estate. Should she predecease him, all of her property would go to her children.[7] Mary (Branch) Jefferson Maddox died on 13 August 1715. Joseph Maddox's date of death is unknown.[8] It is presumed Mary was buried in Henrico County, Virginia, but the location of the gravesite is not known.
Research Notes
Disputed Origins
Note that The William and Mary Quarterly originally misattributed Mary as the daughter of William, Christopher's brother.[6] This was corrected in a later edition.[9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
David Goode posted on Find A Grave (49372965) a suggestion and link that Martha Branch, the wife of Thomas Jefferson Sr, was the daughter of William Addie Branch and Jane Grigg=Branch=Baugh-Gower. He cites The Osbornes and Related Families Chapter 3, p. 17. As Martha Branch and T Jefferson Sr were my 8th-GGP I am interested in this issue. If this has already been discussed I would appreciate guidance to the discussion.
The error in the suggestion above is discussed in the Biography at the end. There was an error
The William and Mary Quarterly originally misattributed Mary as the daughter of William, Christopher's brother.[6] This was corrected in a later edition.[10]
This is all based on an error. I added this to the profile a few years ago: "Note that The William and Mary Quarterly originally misattributed Mary as the daughter of William, Christopher's brother.[6] This was corrected in a later edition.[10]" See those sources that are linked in the profile.
It looks like her marriage date has been entered as her death date....but, I also cannot find a "good" source or explanation for the death date at Find a Grave....any ideas?
I see what you're talking about Robin. I've added sources for the pre-nuptial agreement and marriage license. The "pre-nup", dated 16 Nov 1700 and submitted by Joseph Mattocke in Apr 1701, was actually witnessed by Mary Jefferson. Because this document appears in what is labeled as a Will book, it seems the assumption was made that the dates related to her will. I also couldn't find a source for the 1715 date, but don't see a reason why it should be used just because it's found in FindAGrave and many unsourced trees. It seems odd that she would move, particularly east to York Co.
This entire profile appears to consist of old gedcom data and ancestry.com references. I intend to clean it up, with sources, unless there are objections.
Branch-544 and Branch-37 appear to represent the same person because: One profile is empty of information except for name. Merge together to avoid empty duplicates.
Branch-37 and Branch-52 do not represent the same person because: I'm trying to figure out the two different mothers for Mary (Hatcher/Almond)- any help or suggestions or do we need to go to a higher power?
Branch-52 and Branch-37 appear to represent the same person because: I am not sure why this merge is being rejected since both profiles have the same husband. Help me understand please
