Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Bullock) Rice was a Virginia colonist.

Origins

Mary Bullock's grandfather was Edward Bullock (abt.1661-abt.1752), and her father, Edward Bullock (bef.1704-bef.1756) and mother, Ann (Anderson) Bullock (abt.1708-bef.1753). She was named in her father's will.[1]

She married Captain Hezekiah Benjamin Rice[2] in Abbeville, South Carolina, but the index record is unable to be retrieved without Ancestry subscriber access to reveal the year and other details (unable to be retrieved through FamilySearch).[3]

Family of Consent

Mary Bullock and Hezekiah Rice had at least the following children:

  1. Edward Rice[1]
  2. Annis[2] (Anne) Rice (ca. 1759-1840)
  3. Joel Rice[2]
  4. John Rice[2]
  5. Elisah Rice[2]
  6. Martha Rice[2]
  7. Williamson Rice[2]
  8. Edmund Rice
  9. Ibzan Rice
  10. Milly Rice
  11. Othoniel / Authniel Rice
  12. Hezekiah Rice
  13. Jeptha Rice (m. Nancy)

Aker (1952) places the family in Granville County, North Carolina.[2]

A probate record for Mary Bullock (ca. 1740-1795) at minimum confirms her name, per the indexing reference to the same document, confirms a death date of before Oct 1795, per the probate date, and the county of death.[4]

Slaves

Per her father's will,[1] the following enslaved persons were transferred to her upon his death. These are enumerated per US Black Heritage: Heritage Exchange Portal protocol.

  1. Cate, adult woman
  2. Charles, adult man
  3. Tom, son of Cate

Research Notes

Disputed Son

Captain Hezekiah Rice (abt.1732-bef.1796) and Mary (Bullock) Rice (abt.1738-bef.1795) are identified as married in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) RICE, HEZEKIAH Ancestor record #: A094919; however, their children include Annie/Annis (Rice) Oldhan/Oldham; William Rice who married Sarah; Ibzane Rice who married Dolly Carloss; Hezekiah Rice who married Mary Polly Leftwich; Jeptha Rice who married Nancy Jouett; and Othoneil Rice who married Sarah. Therefore, in the absence of any proof of a son named Gideon, Gideon Rice (abt.1763-bef.1804) is being detached until such time as any proof emerges.

  • WIP Note: The Aker (1952) source makes a mention in passing about Hezekiah Rice, and also the Bulloch siblings that married Rices which has an additional source that may provide more detail. It is odd that Aker mentions so few of Mary's children, but Edward was named in the will of Mary's father.

Though it is in a county over 80 miles away, it is within the realm of possibility that Mary (Bullock) Rice relocated to Craven County, as a probate file appears for Mary Rice in 1812 (Inventory of the Estate of Mary Rice Returned Dec 1812). No other probate record has been located.

The below describe probate file mentions Jepse [could be Jeptha] Rice, which is an unusual name, but among other Rice names are Israel, Betsey Rice. In a 1819 amendment on sales, Jepse is deceased (daughter may have been named Mary). Possibly Milly Rice is named in this inventory/sales amendment (requires further review). Sally Rice and Sarah Rice are named (among many others with a variety of surnames) in the amendment section.

Again, no probate/estate file for any other Mary Rice has been located.
