  • 1679 Wm Elam and John Cox Sr were listed living next to each other on the Henrico Co tythable list for 1679, lends credence to the fact that John married Mary (Elam) Kennon after the death of his first wife. She was the daughter of William ELAM.

After John Cox's death, Mary (Elam) Kennon Cox filed suit against his first five sons over the will to regain her dowry.[11]

‘Adventurers of Purse and Person’ Ed4 Vol1 p728 shows that ….

John Cox was married more than once. One wife may have been a daughter of Robert Craddock. His children by an earlier wife or wives were William, Bartholomew, and Henry. The wife who survived him was Mary Kennon and Richard Cox was her son.

I realize some researchers believe Mary Elam possibly married a Kennon before marrying John Cox. Another possibility (based on the statements in APP), is that John may have married 3 times.

Could it be that John married lastly Mary Kennon, license Sept 22, 1682 (married Sept 25, 1682, Henrico Co Vol I p225) and Mary Elam was an earlier wife, already deceased when her father’s will in 1688 included John Cox? And perhaps Mary Elam had no children?

Either way, I accept Mary Kennon as Richard’s mother as listed in Adventurers of Purse and Person.

Cox-41389 and Cox-508 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate
Lots of very good information here however some is confusing to me. Sorry if I missed some sources, but could someone clarify please? John Cox-508 was born in 1630. Is there a source proving his birthdate or is it speculated in documents or books by researchers. If speculated, what’s the logic and shouldn’t it show as ‘Uncertain’?

John supposedly married twice. Unknown Craddock is speculated, correct? I don’t understand the name for Mary (Kennon) Elam. Was her maiden name Kennon or Elam or was it Elam and she married a Kennon and it is speculated or assumed she was a wife of John because Mary Kennon sued sons of John? If the two wives are speculated, shouldn’t they be shown as ‘Uncertain’?

At the top, it shows John married Mary (Elam) Cox in 1665 but further down there’s a screenshot ‘Marriage to Mary Kennon Elam’ and again, Mary’s name confuses me. The screenshot shows license returned in Sept 1682 for a marriage of John Coxe Sr & Mary Kennon and, again, Mary’s name is confusing. And the date of marriage is confusing being 1665 in the profile but 1682 in the screenshot.

Sorry this family is from Virginia, and no other sources list James as a son.

"You'll find lots of info available for this Richard Cox and Mary Trent. Richard was the half-brother of my ancestor, Bartholomew Cox. Richard's parents were John Cox and his second wife Mary Kennon (Richard was John's only child by Mary). John Cox (c1640-1697) was the son of William Cox(e) and Elizabeth (Hutchins?). William arrived in Jamestown, VA aboard the ship Godspeed in 1610. The Godspeed was one of the three ships that brought the original settlers to Jamestown in 1607 as well, and there's a full-scale replica of it docked at Jamestown today."

This John Cox 1149 and John Cox 508 are the same person and should be merged. John Cox had multiple wives, Mary Kennon was one and a female Craddock was another, both mentioned in John Cox 508. One issue of this union with Mary Kennon is Richard Cox, born c1683, will made 13 July 1734, Henrico Co., VA. John Cox 508 is a much more thorough profile.

Excellent job, Mary. Just FYI, Arrowhattocks (many spelling variations!) was a place-name for a plantation on the south side of the James River approximately where the Chesterfield Power Plant is located today - between Proctor's Creek and Dutch Gap (Great Swamp) areas. I believe one of the Harris families once owned it (no proof).
