Biography

John Fleming (November 1697–1756) was a judge in Cumberland County, Virginia who served in the Virginia House of Burgesses for more than a decade, working with John Robinson and Peyton Randolph. In 1764, he worked with Patrick Henry, George Johnston and Robert Munford on the Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions. His son William Fleming later held his seat in the House of Burgesses, representing Cumberland County. [1]

Cumberland County was established in 1749 from Goochland County. The county is named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, second son of King George II of Great Britain. Cumberland County was also home to the Fleming family, which included Judge John Fleming and his son Judge William Fleming. From 1749 until 1777, when the eastern portion was detached to form Powhatan County, Mosby Tavern served as the county courthouse. The tavern subsequently became known as "Old Cumberland Courthouse." In 1778 the narrow triangular area bordering the southern bank of the James River was annexed from Buckingham County. [2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I have mapped out all of the direct descendants of these 4 : Jane Fleming https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zKFY0zPxfAXbCAtGzBc4ieq06FZoZJEo/view?usp=sharing [Fleming-13848] Martha Fleming https://drive.google.com/file/d/12mkNLPC3trI1r_yQYez0-Igec2EyAw82/view?usp=sharing [Fleming-2110] Alexander Fleming https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z9yZbBO5-ekha_dr4BfHMn1K4pa23x82/view?usp=sharing [Fleming-10310] Margaret Fleming https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FTY1yWtQ10-SiukKpjmzXQ1jOaympJCh/view?usp=sharing [Fleming-14989]) are DNA matches to me and made profiles on WikiTree. Two of them are X-DNA Matches, Ancestry and others say they are children of Marry Bolling [Bolling-94] and John Fleming [Fleming-23]. Now that we have Mitochondrial DNA of Mary Bolling they can easily be checked also Alexander Fleming [Fleming-10310] has a Y Match and can be checked with the male line, can someone do that I was right about Thomas Fleming [Fleming-1419] you can go back and see my arguments for him

"This a a story and has been perpetuated for years in various books etc. (eg. the book by Fuqua) At this time THERE IS NO PROOF OF A CONNECTION!" https://www.geni.com/people/Ursula-Tarleton/6000000000701018590. Keeping this legion in mind, I do have DNA prof that is X-DNA and also many DNA lines of mine suggest link through, see profile note John Wigton Fleming [Fleming-23], I have most of the lines to my matches to him with links to the mapped out profiles on WikiTree but to make the X Matches work they have to connect To William Ruthven or his wife through this profile like this ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eDj5CgR_gJRz4Gafm-TXf_KXCW3meTWV/view?usp=sharing) and then my X-trail to them like this (https://drive.google.com/file/d/15-8g6LdeUPs2DF6u5GhWpIiNt4Zx5TT4/view?usp=sharing )

Did you even look or compare the DNA results right on the side bar before you detached Martha as Daughter to John Fleming ?

Please look at DNA confirmation set-up at WikiTree. DNA is not evidence or a source. I recommend acquiring original sources for your proof. Unfortunately, FindAGrave sites are written without "proof". Read John Fleming's probated Will.

Ruthven X-DNA Tree File Links On my WikiTree is just some of the resurch i have done, There are undeniable links to these matches of mine, I'm not saying it is proff yet but if you look at the relationships between all of these people there is a pattern, this profile of mine is not up to date and i continually add to stringthen them. Ancestry uses true lines to "Match".

X-DNA go mutch faarther back than 6-8 generations and Mother to son passing is 100% besides the proses of elimination, If people would not put somuch into faulty records and give the DNA a chance you would se what could develope, Children are easily left out of wills because of splits do to step or half siblings fighting or disowen, I can garrentee John Fleming had more children known by DNA just not shown, forgive my awful spelling. DNA DOSENT LIE

Hi! I removed PPP from this profile, as I didn't see that neither his LNAB nor the profiles attached as parents needed to be protected. (See more about PPP at Help:Project_Protection.)

Let me know* if you think the profile does need to be protected & why.

Cheers, Liz

* in a private message or a post on my profile - I won't see it if you reply here.

John Fleming's will says he is "of Cumberland County" and the will is recorded in Cumberland Co., VA, WB 1, pp. 122-125 (digital image at Ancestry.com - https://ancstry.me/2VRMboy). Should the death location be changed from Powhatan Co. to Cumberland Co.?

I'm a descendant of Benoni Fleming (Fleming-4997) and Thomas Fleming (Fleming-4998). I also appear in the DNA Connections for John Fleming (Fleming-23). Could this be evidence enough to reconnect Thomas Fleming (Fleming-4998) as a child of John Fleming (Fleming-23)? Forgive me as I am relatively new to wikitree and DNA results.

Removed Thomas Fleming (Fleming-4998) as a child as there was no evidence that 1) Thomas Fleming died in Canada 2) That these were his parents.WHAT IS KNOWN that Colonel Thomas Fleming had his Will probated in Goochland, Virginia. If someone can get that Will, we will be able to find the right evidence to link him to Benoni.
