Jacob Arentsz (also known as Jacob Arents Cool, Jacob Arentsz, Jacob Arents Kool) was born in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, probably around the year 1570. He was a Sailor or Ferryman in Amsterdam 1596 [1] Jacob wed Aeltje Dircks on 27 January 1596 in Amsterdam. Jacob died 6 November 1634 in the Netherlands. His wife Aeltje Dircks was born in 1572 at Vollenhoven, Netherlands (of Vollenhoven). Aeltje and Jacob had at least six children: Arent, Dierikien, Pieter, Barent, Barent and Lievyn - who were all baptised at Saint Nicholas Church, called De Oude Kerk (The Old Church), in Amsterdam, except for Barent, who was baptised at Saint Catharines Church, called De Nieuwe Kerk (The New Church), also in Amsterdam.
Name
Jacob Arentsz Kool[2]
His surname is spelled variously Cool, Coal, Kool, and after 1806 Cole (not the case which every Kool Family line). This family line used Kool not Cole as some other Kool lines. The pronunciation of all of these names is Cole.
Little is known regarding his father, Arent. In his children's baptismal records JACOB ARENTS is described as a Sailor in Amsterdam and Father works on ship between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. [see source: The Barent Jacobsen Cool Family].
Disputed Origins and Patronyms
Some sources have identified Jacob Arentsz as a son of Adriaen Jacobsz Kool and Margaretha van Rosendael. There are no known sources connecting him to these parents. if Jacob's father was Adriaen Jacobsen Kool, then Jacob's patronymic name would have been Adriaensen or a variation thereof. Adriaensen is the patronymic that is formed by adding sen, zoon, or simply s, se or sz to the father's first name. Jacob's patronym of Arentsz indicates that his father was named Arent, not Adriaen. Moreover, Jacob named his eldest son "Arent"; based on Dutch naming practices of that era, that is a strong indication that Jacob's own father was named Arent.
Some sources have identified this man with the patronymic Barentsen or a variant thereof (e.g., Jacob Barentsen Kool), which would indicate that his father was named Barent. This is also contradicted by records showing him as Jacob Arentsz.
According to Benson's authoritative study The Barent Jacobsen Cool Family : "The Dordrecht line of Kools going back to Adriaen Kool in the year 1450 [i.e., the family of Adriaen Jacobsz Kool] has no connexion whatsoever with the family of Barent Jacobsen Kool/Cool."
Origin and spelling of the surname 1611-1740
Note on possible origin of the surname Cool-Kool
It is likely that the surname Kool/Cool comes from the many place names incorporating the name Cool/Kool within the area of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, such as the Coolsingel. In fact, Jacob Arentsz/Arentsen Kool was described as Veerman op Rotterdam (Ferryman at Rotterdam) in the baptismal records of several of his children. In a [1611 map] there are Cool Polder, Cool Molens, and de Coolse Wech; in a [1660 map] there is Het Ambacht van Schoonderloo en Cool; in a [1740 map] however the spelling for the same place appears as Kool and later still becomes Koolsche, and today would roughly correspond to the Cool Wijk or Cool district of the city of Rotterdam.[3][4]
Birth
abt. 1570
Noord-Holland, Nederlands. According to some family researchers, Jacob was born in 1580 in Vyfretch (!! Never heard of a place named like that ???), Holland. (Vyfretch comes from certain software programs: it could be that the city of Utrecht was meant, as the U sometimes was written as a W, thus Wtrecht, but the place Vyfretch for sure is a non-existent place!) Some family researchers also claim that he came to the New World, and died in 1676 in New York; however, no authority or records have been given in that regard.
Occupation
Sailor or Ferryman between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. [5][6]In his children's baptismal records, Jacob Arents is described as a Sailor in Amsterdam and Father works on ship between Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Yes they are really very hard to read, we were already lucky at least the names of the bride and groom could be deciphered . Tried many many times to make some sense of it , but still no luck . Now if it is absolutely clear he is 29 , this of course could very well be his birth and these his parents :

This was the only Jacob I could find in Amsterdam ...
At a first glance i can only make out the names of Jacob Arentsz and Aeltje Dircks. I'll print the marriage record off and try to study it with a magnifying glass tomorrow. The 16th/17th century handwriting is the absolute hardest to read!
Good luck to us, Bea! but we may never find Jacob Arentsz parents! And that is alright: better no parents, than false ones. At a certain point all lines come to an end, for lack of records. We are lucky, it seems to me, to have come as far back as 1570. A general rule of genealogy research is that the furthest back we can hope to reach, is the end of the Middle Ages (ca 1500), unless the ancestor was from upper nobility or royalty.
Cool-192 and Arentsz-3 appear to represent the same person because: There's every indication that these are the same person. No conflicts; Arentsz-3 is PPP
Thanks :)

Corrected his year of Birth, according the Bio he was born around 1570, it said 1580.
And was reading the G2G again, Jan mentioned it looked like the age mentioned at the marriage record said he was 27 , or maybe it's 29 ? Hard to read so (roman xx and something that's hard to really say what it is . but anyway the xx seem pretty clear so he would have been age 20 + something .
The incorrect parents removed , so now we really have to look if we can find the correct ones eeh :D
At www.watwaswaar.nl Michelle, he added the links to them in one of the G2G 's and just was checking the G2G's and noticed there are a whole lot of records found by Carrie , don't know if they all are added at the right places already ? I'll check and will add them if not , maybe the key to his parents is somewhere in these records eeh ;)
And here is a Wikipedia page Philip added , guess with the google translate button you can read what it says.
O and it's not just one map, these were three different maps , I made a collage of those to show what name was used during what time, so the earliest one was Cool and the later version was Kool (in the maps that is)

Aeriaensz is another variant spelling of the name rendered here as Arentsz. Could you please add that name to the Other Last Names data field?
