Biography

Birth

John Lake was baptized in Wickford, Essex, on 6 July 1617. [1] Possibly it is this John who is "mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Edmund Reade of Wickford, dated Nov. 20, 1623; probably that son of John and Margaret (Reade) Lake who was mentioned as dead by Mrs. Lucy Downing, when she wrote, on Jan. 30, 1657/8, from Edinburgh to Fitz John Winthrop: 'Your uncle, Collonell Reade, was, a month or two since, with us, . . . and (said) that God had takne (sic) a sonn of his sister Lackes that was with him, and was very hopefull for further preferment.'"

However, it may be his younger brother Thomas for whom Walter Goodwin Davis also could not find further information. If the Reade letter does date to 1658, both would be 41 and 39 years old respectively and "established." Of course, anyone associated with Col. Thomas Reade would hope for preferment; Reade had been an important officer in the New Model Army since its founding in 1645.

If so intimately associated with Reade, looking to the records of the New Model Army and Cromwell's regime for both John Lake and Thomas Lake could prove fruitful. A list with emendations of the initial Army officers was located, but no Lakes are listed.[2]

Research Notes

Statement: Death date BEF 1657/1658 Place: Gravesend, Kings, Long Island, Later NY

Comment: This about date and location derives from this 2007 tree - https://www2.rockisland.com/~doebee/genealogy/html/catlin.ged. A review indicates the usual confusion of several Lake families. This death location is attached to this John above with no sources provided.

  • Asking Google the correct prompt yields the result that, yes, there IS a John Lake resident in Gravesend. That is this John Lake, husband of Ann Spicer, Their profiles are supervised by the New Netherlands project. They have removed any connections to the Lakes of co. Essex as clearly unproven.

Statement: Profile Lake-345 had a death date of 6 August 1677.

Comment: That is John Lake, merchant-tailor of Boston, brother of Captain Thomas Lake, also of Boston. Neither is a relation to this Lake family of co. Essex. See Jacobus, Goodyear of New Haven [3] Robert M. Gerrity, 2.24.24

Lake-1231 and Lake-119 appear to represent the same person because: Lake-119 was originally connected to a fictitious spouse. It is apparent from the research that he was intended to be the same person as Lake-1231. Please merge to remove the duplicate profile.

Lake-7148 and Lake-119 do not represent the same person because: Not the same, but easily confused.

Hi Edward,

I'm planning to do some updates to this profile based on this article: Peck, S. Allyn, "The English Ancestry of the Lake Family of Boston, Massachusetts, and of Sir Edward Lake, Baronet, of England," The American Genealogist 22(1945):71-80 (Link by $ubscription.)

Let me know if you have additional source information to help since it appears the parents attached here may be incorrect.

Hi Bobbie. I have no idea how I got posted as Profile Manager for this profile, I have extensive family history research and none of it relates to a John Lake. If you’d like to take over as profile manager I’m fine with that.

Thanks Edward,

I'm working on the "other" John Lake, so I have no real interest in this one. But thank you! Perhaps a descendant will pick him up eventually.

This person may have immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

Please feel free to improve the profile(s) by providing additional information and reliable sources. PGM encourages the Profile Managers to monitor these profiles for changes; if any problems arise, please contact the PGM Project via G2G for assistance. Please note that PGM continues to manage the parent's profile, but is happy to assist on the children when needed.

As you work your way through the Lakes (too many Lakes!), note that this John Lake & Margaret Reade family has been exhaustively treated by Walter Goodwin Davis at Ancestry of Bethia Harris, pp. 53-56. I have added the archive.org link to that source. THIS Lake family has NOTHING to do with the Coys. Margaret is a relative of Governor JohnWinthrop. Her daughter's marriage to John Gallop is at Anderson GMB: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-begins-immigrants-to-ne-1620-1633-vols-i-iii/image?volumeId=12107&pageName=726&rId=23895085

Thanks very much for your supporting info, Robert. With Edward's permission, I'll "borrow" Mary Coy and attach her to the John Lake who was the correct spouse when his profile is complete.

Edward - just making sure you're ok with this plan. Thanks! Bobbie

I have now removed Mary (Coy) Lake (abt.1621-1678) as the wife of this profile. A new John Lake will be created who is connected to the appropriate & proven parents.

I've now disconnected the fictitious spouse "Sarah Boosey" and sent her off to the Disproven Existence Project. See: G2G

John Lake and Margaret Reade had a son John baptized in Wickford, Essex, on 6 July 1617. Where's the evidence that he emigrated to New England or married Sarah Boosey?

Lake-119 and Lake-345 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date, both born in Essex and emigrated to New England.

There might be some conflation here as the husband of Anne Spicer, both of them New Netherland Settlers, has an unknown ancestry, though he might be the son of a Richard, and there is no known second wife for him.
