I've hit a dead end in my research at this point. Traced a family of Larocques from Brockville, ON back to a Christopher Larocque and Madeline (or Margdalene) Thompson in Lancaster township in the early 1800's, then could not find their ancestors, who may have lived in Québec. Can't find anything out about Ellen Feeney who immigrated to Canada from Bermuda in 1870, and married(?) - we can't find a marriage record - Joseph Long of Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada before 1895. Also seeking the ancestors of an Arthur Lalonde (1869 - 1927) from Brockville, ON. Any help appreciated.

Biography

I'm a freelance writer and editor working in Canada. I'm researching my father's side of the family, about which I knew little when I started. I'm keeping all the information fairly private for now, until I've had time to create the profiles and then check with the living members who are in there to make sure they're okay with the information being online. After that, if they're cool, I'll make it all more public. Happy to talk to anyone who might have more information about eastern Ontario Larocque families in the early 1800's, and happy to share what I've already discovered. Also wondering if anyone who has ideas around why my great-grandmother was Irish, but was born in India, and might have lived in Bermuda before coming to Canada in the late 1800's. I could be interested in how to find Bermuda marriage records.

Hi Cindy! Here's what I found for the Charles Laroque you told me about. Let me know where you'd like me to go from here to help you connect to him from your tree.

Hi, Ken. Thanks for your offer of help. Charles Larocque may (or may not) be the father of Christopher Larocque (the one who was partnered with Madeline Thomson). If so, it was probably an illegitimate birth when Charles was quite young, and possibly a result of a liaison with an Indigenous woman while Charles was in the "pays en haut". Inexplicably, Charles was buried at St. Raphael church in Lancaster Twp, ON (Canada West), the same church at which one of Christopher's daughters was baptized, even though Charles lived his entire life, by all accounts, in St. Louis-de-Gonzague in Québec (Canada East). Charles did own land in Lancaster Twp. and there is speculation that it is the same land on which Christopher Larocque lived and raised his family. So perhaps, when he was very elderly, he went to live with his son before he died. Or maybe there is no connection between them. Louis Larocque, who runs the Larocque rootsweb site, seems to think there is a strong possibility, though. That is pretty much the limit of what I know about the possible connection. I have been unable to find a record of birth for Christopher in Ontario or Québec.

Hi Cindy,

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles. This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz.

In particular, it is important that a complete source is provided, so others can judge the accuracy of the information found on the profile, and independently verify the information by finding the source themselves. For example, LDS microfilm for a certain area can include a wide variety of records, such as church records, tax records, census records, or histories published decades after the people profiled died, so more complete details of the record should be provided. For LDS records, the catalog likely has information you can copy and paste, and then maybe just add the page or image number. The sources help page has some additional information: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks!

Hello Cindy,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thank you, Natalie. The list of reliable sources for this project is extremely helpful. (Can't wait for Covid-19 to be diminished enough that travel is once again possible, as I must travel to both Québec and France to further my research.)

Hey Cindy,

Thank you for signing the Honor Code. Please take your time to review it again, you can always find the text in your menu on the top right of every page.

May I suggest amending your tags so you have one tag for each name you are researching and the location, rather than including full names? So FEENEY instead of ELLEN_FEENEY?

If you create tags for just surnames, the tags become clickable links to pages of others who want to collaborate about that surname. With a full names as a tag, that isn't possible. This link may help you Tags

Your Wiki Genealogy Feed will show the activity connected to the surnames and places relating to your tags.
