Biography

Martin Martin's parents are unknown. See the Disputed Origins section below for more information. Do not add any parents without prior discussion with profile managers and/or G2G discussion.

Martin Martin married Sarah Hix on 10 Feb 1698/9 in New Kent.[1] He was appointed as a processioner there on 4 May 1689.[2]

Children:

  1. Amesen, chr. 6 Apr 1706[3]
  2. Elizabeth, m. Merry Webb[4]
  3. Valentine, chr. 18 Jun 1710[5]
  4. Thomas, b. 4 Jun 1720[6]
  5. Lucy, b. 20 Aug 1726[7]

On 24 Mar 1725, Martin Martin patented 358 acres of land from Joseph Woodson in Henrico Co. on the south side of the James River and west side of Fine Creek for 40 shillings. The land later became part of Goochland Co. and was sold to Stephen Woodson on 28 Sep 1730 for 40 shillings.[8] In Stephen Woodson's 1735 will, he left 50 shillings to "Martin Martn, late of New Kent Co."[9]

Martin passed away in 1745.

Research Notes

Martin Martin probably died in Goochland County, Virginia. The Martin Martin who lived in Henrico County, Virginia was still alive when the Martin Martin born in New Kent County died about 1745. That was the year when Martin Martin's son, Thomas, resurveyed the land he inherited.

Disputed Origins

The parents of Martin Martin are unknown. There are two popular theories, but neither has documentary evidence.

Parents previously attached to this profile were Thomas Martin and Rebecca Higgins. This follows the legend of an Isle of Skye origin in Scotland. A book listing the children of Thomas Martin and Rebecca Higgins does not show a son named Martin. [10] Y-DNA evidence from Martin's descendants who have the R-M512 haplogroup suggest a British rather than Scottish origin.[11]

Others suggest that his parents were George Martin and Ursula Unity Susannah West. John Russell formulated an argument against this theory: "George Martin and Unity West were apparently born in the mid to late 1650s and were married in about 1676. However, Martin Martin is listed on a prosessioning order dated May 4, 1689, which presumably includes only landowners age 21 or over. If so, then this Martin Martin must have been born in or before 1668, at least eight years before the marriage of George Martin and Unity West and at a time when Unity was only about 11 years old." See his post for additional information. John Russell, "Martin Martin, son of George Martin & Unity West?", 23 Jun 2011, (https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/martin/28956/)

And regarding "George Martin" the following is from FamilySearch, posted by someone named

Liam Wulf.

The current person DOES NOT EXIST. George Thomas Martin was created back in 2012 as Thomas Martin, when his name was changed no one attached any records supporting the change of name or even said WHY they believed the new name was correct. Since then he has been identified as: "Capt George Martin Jr" "Reverend George Thomas Martin" "George Thomas Martin II" and is presently just "George Thomas Martin" However there are no sources attached supporting any of these names. There have been 22 records merged into this record, and obviously people are getting the information to create these profiles from SOMEWHERE, so why are there no sources attached?

There is also zero evidence that "Ursula Unity Susannah West Martin" ever existed.

Martin Martin is listed by several men who belong to Group 8 of the Martin Surname Project at FTDNA. I'm in Group 8, so I can confirm that this line is not Scottish but of English origins. However, this Anglo-Norman line also was part of Henry II's invasion of Ireland, thus establishing the Martins who became part of the Tribes of Galway. Some of our BigY matches have Irish immigrants to Colonial Virginia; the rest have English immigrants.

Two of the men who claim Martin Martin as their MRCA are R-M198, which is R1a not R1b.

I removed George Martin jr (1656-1703) as father (again). As noted in Disputed Origins, the evidence is that George Martin is NOT Martin Martin's father. Please don't add him again without evidence/discussion.

And yet again. Added disputed origins emphasis.

Parents attached again despite massive banner warning and info on "parents'" profiles that they probably don't even exist. Detached again.

I approved the merge to Martin-4906 as representing the same person. However, I've found no evidence for the parents and suggest they be removed, pending supporting documentation, at the merge.

Martin-40698 and Martin-28386 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and death dates and state are used, as well as the same wife. The research notes on Martin-40698 seem to refer to an entirely different family, however.

Hello,

I am confused... Your research notes and biography contradict each other. Also, the FAG memorial you cite states that Martin Martin of this profile is probably of English, not Scottish, descent.

Martin-4906 and Martin-28386 appear to represent the same person because: Husband of Sarah Hix. Father of Valentine Martin. Martin-4906 birth/parentage need to be evaluated to determine if they should be retained during merge.

I think Martin's father was George, then back to Thomas... Check this out on Geni.com...
