Biography

Blandina Masterson was born before 1580 to parents Edmund Masterson and Joane Beching of Ashford, Kent, England.[1] Blandina's parents are known because her husband, John Ellis, witnessed the 1619 wedding of his brother-in-law, Richard Masterson (bef.1580-1633) in Leiden, Holland.[2][3][4] She married John Ellis of Sandwich, Kent, England in 1594.[5]

They had several children in Sandwich, Kent.

A marriage record for her widowed husband, dated 5 August 1629 in London, proves she died before 1629. He was documented as the widower of Blandina Marsterson from Sandwich.[2][6]

Name

Blandina Masterson[2][5]

Parents

Edmund Masterson and Joane Beching of Ashford, Kent, England.[1][2]

Birth

Likely between 30 Oct 1564 and 1580 in Ashford, Kent, England.
Her parents were married in Ashford on 30 Oct 1564.[1] Her brother, Richard Masterson, was baptized 11 Sep 1580 in Ashford, Kent. Paulick identified Blandina as his older sister.[2][7] If true, she would have been born after 1564 and before 1580. She was likely born in Ashford because her parents were married there and her younger brother was born there.

Places of Residence

  1. Ashford, Kent, England. See discussion of birth above.
  2. Sandwich St Peter, Kent. She lived there between her 1594 marriage and the birth of her child Thomas in 1608. [5][8]
  3. Leiden, Holland, from 1612.[2]

Marriage

Blandina married 30 Apr 1594 in Sandwich St Peter, Kent, England to John Ellis.[2][5] A birth record has not been found for John, but his age was reported as approximately 50 years old in 1619. This means he was about 25 when he married Blandina and was born about 1569.[4][9]
This marriage ended due to Blandina’s death. By 1629, Ellis was living in London where he married secondly 5 August 1629 to Margarita Drosser in the Dutch Reformed Church at Austin Friars. This record identified John as the widower of "Blandina Marsterson (sic) from Sandwich". Margarita was the widow of Richard Stokes.[2][6]

Children

Paulick has identified the following children of Blandina Masterson and John Ellis of Sandwich, St. Peter’s Parish, Kent, England:[4]
  1. Christopher, bapt. 9 Feb 1594/5.[10]
  2. Mary, bapt. 14 Nov 1596.[11]
  3. John, bapt. 4 Feb 1598/9; d. bef. 28 Aug 1603.[4][12] See Research Notes for discussion.
  4. Susanna, bapt. 29 Mar 1600/1.[13]
  5. John, bapt. 28 Aug 1603.[14] See Research Notes for discussion.
  6. Elizabeth, bapt. 15 Dec 1605.[15]
  7. Thomas, bapt. 6 Nov 1608.[8]
A Mary and a Christopher Ellis are listed in the records at Leiden, Holland.[4]

Death

The 5 August 1629 London marriage record for John Ellis identifies him as the widower of Blandina Masterson. Blandina died before this date.[6]

Burial

Unknown.

Research Notes

References to Anna Masterson: Many IGI Files and Pedigree Resource Files found on FamilySearch.org could be interpreted to refer to Blandina as Ann or Anna. There seems to be much confusion within this user-contributed material regarding her proper name, vital dates, birth location and death location. No primary or peer-reviewed secondary sources proving the names 'Ann' or 'Anna' have been found.

Baptism and Burial Records for Son John Ellis: According to Paulick, son John Ellis was baptized on 4 Feb 1598/9 and buried on 28 Aug 1603.[4] He cited the parish register of St. Peter’s, Sandwich, Kent, on FHL microfilm 1850186, as transcribed by Reverend H.N Nowell, M.A. in 1933. An indexed version of the inferred burial record is shown to be a christening record on FamilySearch.org.[14] An image of this record is available on FindMyPast.com, and the image confirms a John, son of John Ellys was christened on August 28th.[16] An explanation or clarification was not found within the article by Paulick. It’s possible this was a second son named John of the same father if the John born in 1599 died before 28 Aug 1603.

Death Record of John Ellis from 1616, St Peter, Kent: A death record for a person named John (Johannes) Ellis was recorded in Sandwich, St Peter, Kent, England on 1 Mar 1616/7. This record does not mention a father, so it hasn't been attached to Blandina's son John (bapt. 28 Aug 1603). He would have been thirteen years old on 1 Mar 1616/7. The family of Blandina and John Ellis lived in Leiden during 1612 to at least 1619.[17]

Masterson-254 and Masterson-27 appear to represent the same person because: profile cleansed ready for merge. Was set up as imaginary wife of imaginary joseph ellis

I updated the profile of Blandina's husband John Ellis Sr. (abt.1569-aft.1629) to include a biography and similar format.

Masterson-27 and Masterson-312 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles represent Blandina Masterson who married John Ellis. They should be merged.

This profile appears to represent two different people for the following reasons:

1. The person is referred to as both Ann and Belinda. It's extremely unusual for a commoner to have both a given and middle name during this time period. This suggests facts have been combined for two people, Ann and Belinda. 2. The Belinda Masterson who was alleged to be the mother of John Ellis of Sandwich, MA was married to a man named John Ellis in Sandwich, Kent, England on 30 Apr 1594. This happened before the birth date shown in this profile.

3. The inferred father, Edmund Masterson (1544-1621) was married in Kent, England, and Belinda Masterson was also married there. Since this profile shows she was born about 1598 in Cotton, Yorkshire, England, I suspect Belinda was another person who was born in Kent. This profile shows her birth location as Cotton, Yorkshire, England, but a source for this birth is not provided.

You clearly know more and have done more research on this than I. I would be delighted for you to make whatever changes you think appropriate.
Hi Laurence and Katharine,

The Puritan Great Migration project has protected this profile because of the disputed origins. This, however, only limits changes to the data section of the profile - so the project requests collaboration with changes there.

Please proceed with your work on the biography of this profile, Laurence. I note that the PGM category also states that this profile needs biographical work. Thanks.

Thanks Katharine and Cheryl,

I noticed this information during an attempt to resolve conflicting opinions of FamilySearch regarding the disputed origins of John Ellis (abt.1620-abt.1677). I've also done some research on his son, Mathias Ellis (1657-1748), due to the confusing nature of the records from his family group. I'll see what I can dig up. I'll try to compile sources for both Ann of Cotton, Yorkshire and Belinda of Sandwich, Kent. Hopefully this effort will generate results that help clarify this profile.

Agree, these wives need to be sorted and merged. Will try to look at it later if no one else can get to it.
I have removed Blandina from her husband and proposed a merge with Blandina Masterson-312 who is married to the correct John Ellis.
Lots on this profile is questionable, and I don't know how it should be corrected.

Was Nancy also married to James Gregorie? The birthdates for him and Joseph Ellis are the same, b. 1490. Also, her father and mothers birthdates were given as 1544 which would make them 46 yo when they had her, is this correct?
posted on Masterson-254 (merged) by Lynda (Ellis) Farley
Masterson-254 and Masterson-27 are not ready to be merged because: Is it possible these are two separate Mastersons who married two separate Ellis brothers. Judging by dob and odd, looks like a posssibility.

Masterson-254 and Masterson-27 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, birth is a guess, same parents, same marriage (death seems to be "off" in 254 - no source). This should not hold up the merge.

Please approve if you agree. Thanks!

Nancy Ellis could not have been the mother of Ann (Ellis) Armistead born in 1612, since she died in 1610.

Might Netherton have been her married name from a previous marriage? I show her parents as having been Edmund Masterson and Joan Betching. However, like you, I had had her name as Nancy Netherton (child of Edmund Masterson) but changed it to her father's last name.
