Biography

Samuel Mayo, son of Nathaniel Mayo and Hannah Prence, was b in Eastham, Plymouth Colony 12 Oct 1655.[1][2] and was buried in the Orleans Cemetery.[3]

Samuel married (1) _____ _____ who died before 15 July 1727 (Samuel's intention to marry second wife).[1][4] The children named in Samuel's will were all married before he married his second wife, so were the children of his first wife.

The Mayflower Index 1932 and NEHGR 102:49 listed his wife as Ruth Hopkins d/o Gyles and Catherine (Wheldon) Hopkins). Gyles 1682 will and 1688/9 codicil, probated 1690, do not mention any daughters[5][1] In the 2014 Brewster Silver Book (Part 1) it is indicated that neither the first nor last name of Samuel's first wife is known. It confirms that this unknown first wife is the mother of all of his children and that she probably died in Eastham before 15 July 1727.[6] In the 2019 Brewster Silver Book (Part 3) all seven children (Hannah, Sarah, Samuel, Jonathan, Rebecca, Mary, and Mercy) are listed as being the children of Samuel with no mention of a mother.[7]

He married second Mary Sweat in Eastham 31 Aug. 1727/8[sic]. Her ancestry is unknown.[8][1] She probably died before 9 Apr 1734 (husband's will). Given Samuel's age, Mary was probably previously married.[1]

Samuel was a selectman for Eastham in 1715, 1717, 1721-3 and was the representative to the General Court in 1711 and 1715.

At the Plymouth Court of Common Pleas, Sept. 1735, Cornelius Bennitt of Middlebourough, physician vs. Jonathan Washburn, Silas Washburn and Lemuell Washburn of Bridgwater, husbandmen by their attorney James Otis, Esq. Ejectment of 1/7 part and 1/3 of 1/7 part of land in a tract “formerly known as Govournour Prince and Major Josiah Winslows Purchase on the Northerly Side of Titticut River… now known by the Name of the Thousand Acres” sold on 29 Mar. 1734 by Samuel, Thomas, Nathaniel, Theophilus, and Israel Mayo to the plaintiff by deed. The plaintiff said that refusal to yield possession was to his damage of £100. The defendants pleaded not guilty. The jury verdict was for the plaintiff with judgment of £17.14s.9d and £6.17s.6d costs of court. [9]

In his will 9 Apr. 1734 Samuel gave his sons Jonathan and Samuel most of the real estate but some of it to be shared by his daughters. The probate court ruled on 27 Nov. 1760 that the real estate could not be divided to the testators wishes without damage to its value and ordered it to be sold at public auction and the money distributed amongst the heirs including the daughters; Mercy, wife of John Cole, Mary, wife of Ralph Smith, Rebecca, wife of Stephen Cole, the heirs of deceased Hannah, wife of Judah Hopkins, the heirs of deceased daughter Sarah, wife of James Higgins, and grandson Thomas Mayo, son of Samuel. [10][11]

Samuel died 29 Oct 1738, aged 83 years,[2] and was buried in the Orleans Cemetery.[1][12]

The Mayflower Society no longer accepts Ruth Hopkins as a wife of Samuel. She is now designated Ruth _____
posted by Anne B
In the 2014 edition of the Brewster Silver Book she is listed as _____ _____, no name at all. She is listed as the mother of his children. The book indicates that she probably died in Eastham before 15 July 1727. (Part 1, 2014 edition, page 313) It seems clear that Ruth Hopkins should be disconnected as Samuel's wife and as the mother of his children.

Anne, is your source more recent than the 2014 publication that Sandra gives?

I just checked the 2019 edition of Part 3 and all of the children are listed as being the children of Samuel Mayo with no mention of a mother at all. (Part 3, pages 109-116)

Excellent, thank you Sandra. Could you put a full citation on this profile and we'll work on the mother.

Mary (Mayo) Smith (Mayo-170) wife of Ralph Smith (Smith-8264) is the daughter of Samuel May and Ruth Hopkins and should be added as a child.

Thank you. I have added his daughter, Mary.

Mayo-1793 and Mayo-297 appear to represent the same person because: Same Parents, same dates of birth/death

Mayo-1298 and Mayo-297 appear to represent the same person because: This is leftover from trying to climb a Cobb tree. I now start with the Mayflower person and work down as theis software doesn't seem to be catching possible matches for me.

Thanks for Merging
