Biography

This person is an ancestor of President William Howard Taft, [1]

Date of birth derived from probable date of marriage of 1641. Date of death also estimated. She was the second wife of Experience Mitchell and is believed to be the mother of his five youngest children: Sarah, Edward, Jacob, John, and Hannah.

Maiden Name

Note: this information was duplicated from the page for Constant (Mitchell) Briggs (1620-aft.1690), wife of John Fobes (abt.1613-bef.1660).

John Vobes/Fobes' nuncupative will refers to Experience Mitchell as Constant (Mitchell) Briggs (1620-aft.1690)'s "brother." Stearns' 1908 Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire[2] and the 1972 unpublished manuscript The Fobes Family in America[3] apparently read the term "brother" in the modern sense and state that Constant's maiden name was Mitchell. Based no doubt on Stearns and The Fobes Family in America, most online genealogies for Constant also state that her maiden name was Mitchell.

At the time, however, the term "brother" was used to refer not only to a brother-by-blood but also a brother-in-law or step-brother. In fact, evidence suggests that it is perhaps more likely that Constant was the sister-by-blood of Experience's second wife Mary rather than sister-by-blood of Experience himself: (1) Since, as discussed above, Constant was probably born sometime in 1615-1627, Experience was probably born sometime in 1603-1609, [4] and Experience's second wife Mary was probably born about 1620, Constant's date of birth is more consistent with her being Mary's sister-by-blood than Experience's sister-by-blood. (2) Constant did not have a son named Thomas, suggesting she was not the daughter of Thomas Mitchell. (3) Both Constant and Mary had sons named Edward, suggesting that they had a common father named Edward. If Constant was the sister-by-blood of Experience's second wife, Mary, rather than Experience himself, Constant's maiden name is unknown, not Mitchell.

I see the name Curry as a middle name on some cites associated with Jacob's sons Jacob (1671-1744) and Thomas (1670-1727). Does anyone have a clue as to where that name came from? Is it a stretch to consider Curry as a possible surname for Mary?

What sites show the name Curry for the sons? If you would please provide reliable references they can be evaluated.

One of the many Moultons perhaps?

Molton-11 and Unknown-8527 appear to represent the same person because: Suggest the profile for Mary Molton be merged INTO the profile for Mary Unknown-8527. If you read the biography for husband, Experience Mitchell-137, Robert C. Anderson indicated that we do not know her maiden name.

In this case the ID number is unimportant, as the rule is ... merge into the lowest numbered profile with the correct spelling of the last name at birth. So in order to change the last name to "Unknown" the merge needs to go in the direction as set, into Unknown-8527

Thanks!
