Biography

Elisabeth was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 27 July 1644, recorded as the child of Gijsbert op ten dijck (name often rendered as Gysbert op ten dyck). Witnesses were Governor Willem Kieft (director of New Netherland), Cornelis Van Tienhoven (secretary of New Netherland), and Hendrick Huijgen.[1][2]

Elizabeth's father, Gysbert (Gilbert) op ten Dyke (or "Opdycke" helped settle New Amsterdam (now New York City). He was an officer in the Dutch West India Company, and owned all of Coney Island and several other islands. He lived in New Amsterdam in the Dutch colony of New Netherland, years before it became the city of New York. His daughter Elisabeth married George Wightman in 1663, and they were among the earliest settlers of Rhode Island.

Elizabeth's mother was Katherine Smith. Her parents had married in New Amsterdam in 1643.[3]

Elizabeth's maternal grandfather, Richard Smith, once owned a large portion of Long Island, and also a trading house called "Smith's Castle" in what was then the wilderness south of Massachusetts. Later this area became part of Rhode Island. He leased a very large tract of land from the Indians for the period of 1000 years, payment to be "one red honeysuckle flower every midsummer's day, when lawfully demanded."

Elizabeth married George Wightman in about 1663, probably in Rhode Island.[4]

Elizabeth died about 25 December 1712. [5]

Elizabeth died between 25 December 1712 AND 26 April 1716 at Quidnessett, Kings County, Rhode Island [4]

Research Notes

LNAB: If we are going to abide by the principle of being faithful to Dutch orthography, her LNAB is op ten Dijck, the name recorded for her father at her baptism. (The digraph "ij" is often mistakenly rendered as "y.") Smith-62120 03:07, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Updyke-56 and Op ten Dyck-1 appear to represent the same person because: while death dates are different, source added to Updyke-56 indicates that they are intended to be the same person

Can someone from the project please complete this merge?

I did the merge. Actually, any pre-1700 member could have completed the merge of the nearly-unsourced orphaned profile into the PPP profile. After I had researched her records, determined the Dutch orthography for her LNAB, identified the Dutch spelling as her LNAB, revised the LNAB, and added PPP, it was ready for any pre-1700 member to complete the merge. (And after I had revised the LNAB, I probably mistakenly thought I had completed the requested merge. ;-) )

There is NO possible way that the parents are correct as they lived over 100 years before this person.

The Updike-407 profile was merged into this Op_ten_Dyck-1 profile earlier this year. There is no need to continue discussing the proposal to merge these profiles.
