Biography
Peter/Pieter Thorne was the child of John Thorne and his second wife, Maria Breestede.
Pieter Thorne was christened 24 Dec 1712.[1]
He married Mary Mobbs, probably in NY (more research is needed on her). According to Ancestry research they had the following children:
- Michael Thorn(e) Sr. Thorn-2318 1735-1801
- Elizabeth Thorne 1739-1825
- Tobias Thorn 1734-1764
- Henry Thorn ?-1750
They lived in Hampshire, Augusta, Virginia (today it is WV).
His burial site is unknown at this point.

check siblings given on Ancestry: Mary (1693-1766)? , John b 1712, George b 1713, and half-brother Nicholas (b 1707?)
The migration from NY to VA needs further research. If you have a primary source for this, please share it.
According to the Thornfamily.net source cited above for the christening record, his father was married first to Geertje Bresser who died shortly after giving birth to Nicholas. John then married Maria Breestede and had three children with her, Pieter, John, and George.
His grandfather and great-grandfather were both signers of the Flushing Remonstrance in 1657, English settlers demanding religious freedom who may have married Dutch Reformed women but maintained their own separate culture. His son and grandson were both buried in the Lower Indiana Prebyterian Church cemetery, having fought for freedom from England and received land grants in the Northwest territory.
