Parents marriage took place in 1636 Lynn MA. Joseph Thorne birth date about 1642 is listed in a number of sources. At this time "after 1642" is the best guess. Birth is assumed before his Father had make final choice to move family to newly opened Flushing
William Thorne his father was in the very small group that requested and obtained the rights to a Flushing patent
The year in which William Thorne actually settled in Flushing is not clearly established. From pertinent language in the Indian deed to Flushing (April 14, 1684) it is probable that the actual settlement took place in the fall of 1644 or in the spring of 1645; more likely the later in view of the rigors of the winter season. The first 3 children; William, Joseph, John were probably not born in Flushing, but rather in Lynn MA where William Thorne appears in town records.
Mary Bowne Thorne and husband Joseph were the very first generation born in the New World to legendary founders-leaders of the Flushing Long Island community.
There was huge historic significance to the leadership and sacrifice of Founders and Signers of the Flushing Remonstrance 1657 such as John Bowne, and William Thorne father of Joseph, William Thorne older brother of Joseph, and Edward Farrington brother in law of John Bowne.
The available data suggests that Joseph was successful at growing his property holdings in Flushing area for the family. He was probably still residing in Flushing in 1709 his daughter Mary married John Shotwell Jr., Son Abraham took as his first wife a Shotwell from Plainfield Woodbridge, and 2nd m to Ann Laing in that same community. Joseph and Mary Thorne would have moved to Woodbridge in close proximity to the those married couples and grandchildren.
Thorne Data Base and the Long Island Genealogy records provide 1642-1643 birth; site is not known, perhaps Lynn, Essex Co., Mass.

Contrary to this data point, there is no evidence Joseph ever lived in New Jersey; in his will of 1724, he mentions "Plantation and homestead where I now live in Flushing". Joseph and Mary witnessed their daughter's will in Flushing meeting on 10d 12m (Feb) 1725/6. Finally, the 1727 probate was in Flushing.
His wife apparently moved to Jersey after he died or was visiting there where she wrote her will in 1728. "While Mary declared herself to be 'of Flushing' in her 20 June 1728 will, death records of the Flushing Monthly Meeting say that she died at Woodbridge [New Jersey] in 1728. She may have been visiting her sons Abraham and Jacob, who were then living at Woodbridge."[1]

Thorne Family Genealogy "Joseph Thorne was born about 1642 in Flushing, Long Island, NY." with the other births in Thorne family, I think it occurred before 1647, Very likely father William had left Lynn by 1643. Biographers don't know whereabouts or exact arrival date in Flushing
Only one place did they ID Joseph as 3rd son, <<Joseph Thorne, a third son of the patentee>>, but may have been a mistake. On the pedigree list he comes up as second son born before John. no birth date given.
