A Case Against 'Agnes Coffin'

'Agnes Coffin' , is said to have married Rev. Joseph Hull, approx. 1633, England; his second wife. Unfortunately, the record does not support a maiden name of 'Coffin' .
The arrival of Rev. Hull and his wife, Agnes, is dated ‘’1635’’, Massachusetts; the ship being that of Rev. Hull’s Company, which is of record, in the Immigrant Ships, Transcribers Guild, The Rev. Hull Company[1] Agnes was aged 25 years, and that she was Mr. Hull’s second wife. Agnes birth year and arrival date match this record. But her maiden name is never given.
Assessment of Agnes: The Coffin maiden name should be removed from Agnes' profile, and Unknown be put in its place.
Joanna is named as Rev. Joseph Hull's first marriage in England in the year ‘’1618’’. The spouse’s birth year is given as 1594, which matches that of Rev. Hull.[2]
Assessment of Joanna: A better case for Joanna's maiden name being 'Coffin' is more tenable, in that there are several records that support this.

Agnes was born in 1610, based on her age of 25 given on the ships list.[4] She may have been from Somerset where her husband originated.

The life of Agnes, follows the career of her husband. The Hull Company reached Boston, May 6, 1635. Winthrop's Journal for July 8 1635 says: "At this court Wessaguscus was made a plantation and Mr. Hull, a minister of England, and twenty-one families with him allowed to sit down there." Wessaguscus soon became the town of Weymouth. There was a brief stay in Nantasket, then a part of Hingham, where one of their children was baptized. Mr. Hull, magistrate and member of the General Court of of Massachusetts Bay Colony was frequently at odds with the Boston Puritanical Party, and eventually moved in 1639 to the Plymouth Colony, and there founded the town of Barnstable, at a place called by the Indians, Mattakeese. The family were in Yarmouth in 1641 and Hull was excommunicated for this move. Plymouth Colony was not much more congenial than Massachusetts had been, so Hull and his followers moved to the Episcopal Colony of Sir Ferdinando Gorges in Maine. There he served as minister at Accomenticus (now York, Maine), and the Isles of Shoals. 1653 Massachusetts Bay took the provinces of Maine into their jurisdiction, 1653. Mr. Hull and his wife returned to England, where he was Rector of St. Burien in Cornwall, near Lands End. Hull returned from England, was minister at Oyster River for a short period, and then settled at his old parish at Accomenticus, (York, Maine) where he died in 1665.[6]

Mistress Agnis Hull was granted administration of her husband, Joseph Hull's estate, on 12 June 1666. She was still living 5 Dec 1666.[7]

Hi Kenneth: I found a marriage record for Joseph Hull and Agnes Hunt dated 13 Mar 1633 at Wells, St. Cuthbert, Somerset, England.

Source: Ancestry.com Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812 Provo, UT. USA Ancestry.com Operations Inc. 2016.

I submitted a copy of the record to the Hull Family Association, but as far as I can tell nothing has been done with the record through HFA.

A few of my Hull Cousins and I have added Hunt as Agnes’ surname and attached copies of the record.

Hi Allice (not answering for Kenneth, but on behalf of the PGM Project), this subject was discussed in this G2G post a couple of years ago. Anne B made some good suggestions for further research. I think there will need to be something other than the commonality of names and a nearby location to prove that Agnes was Agnes Hunt. I would suggest digging into researching Agnes's family to see if perhaps a parent or sibling's will makes mention of her by her married name or having been "in New England."

Has anyone explored the possibility that Agnes (b. 1610) was the Agnes Hunt baptized at Bridgwater, Somerset, on 18 February 1609/10. She is the right age to have been 25 when they went to New England. Bridgwater looks like it is about 12 miles from Wells, Somerset, where Josephus Hull and Agnes Hunt were married in March 1633/34. Here is a weblink (at Ancestry) to Agnes Hunt's baptism: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/60856/images/engl78030_d-p-bw-m-2-1-1_m_00022?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=a29576133541b8eea9d40070d8b16f92&usePUB=true&_phsrc=DBj3873&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.257057997.778373598.1612820817-69617887.1575390212&pId=1847066

Possible evidence that Agnis’ maiden name was Hunt. Marriage record for Agnis Hunt and Joseph Hull found on Ancestry [https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/60856/engl78030_d-p-w-st-c-2-1-1_m_00094? 13 Mar 1633

Hunt-16047 and Unknown-392499 appear to represent the same person because: Merging away newly created duplicate profile. Her name is Unknown, not Hunt.

Joe what do you think about the marriage record found? (See comment above you're.) It looks promising.

I thought it was very interesting and a very good possibility. Wells St. Cuthbert is some distance away from Crewkerne, but certainly not impossibly so. Especially for a member of the clergy who was much more mobile. I would be inclined to accept it with some notes that it is a very good possibility but not proven. I had wanted to look at some of the references for clues like the Coddington article before commenting but I haven't gotten to it yet. I believe we don't have the baptisms of any of his children by his first wife, perhaps this is the place to look.

Joe, this subject has resurfaced. Wondering if you had any luck in finding additional clues.

Why was this profile detached from Joseph Hull-132?

Note needs integration of merged material

Agnes was granted letters of administration on Joseph’s estate on 12 June 1666. Therefore, I am changing her death date to "after 12 June 1666.

I am also marking her birth information as uncertain, since she was probably born about 1609-1610, place uncertain.

The Coffin maiden name should be removed from Agnes' profile, and Unknown be put in its place.
This needs a bit of clean-up. Rev. John Hull was married twice. Some of his children (those born before 1633) were children by his first wife, Joanna.

Unknown-201087 and Coffin-2742 appear to represent the same person because: Hi... your "unknown" last name for Agnes Hull is "Coffin". I was going to request to be on the trusted list, but not sure that'll be necessary if you agree to this merge. If not, please let me know if you want more info first. I've also had to request to be on the GPM Project for her husband. Thank you! ~ Dale Lynn Thomas
