Biography

No birth record for Charity Tydings has been found in Maryland. Some researchers have suggested she was the daughter of Thomas Sparrow, but no daughter named Charity is mentioned in the Will of Thomas Sparrow.

Robert Barnes, a well-known Maryland genealogist, lists several possible women named Charity who could have married Richard Tydings, none of them were named Sparrow. His possibilities include: Charity Adams who was named in the Will of William Battin of Somerset Co. in 1662; Charity Bagbie who was named as a daughter in the Will of John Bagbie of Calvert County in 1670; Charity Stone who witnessed the Will of George Puddington of Anne Arundel County in 1674.

Her birth year is a guess based on the fact that her son was under 21 in 1687 and her daughter, Charity was married in 1689. Charity Tydings was deceased by the time her husband wrote his will in 1687.[1][2]

Research Notes

Also, facts regarding the emigrations of John Jordan (probably John Jourdain who married Richard Tydings daughter Charity), David Owen, Joshua Howler, Thomas Fitzwater, Elizabeth (llegible), Thomas Mackrell and Charity Tydings would also be helpful.

On August 13, 1682, Richard Tydings of Anne Arundel County was issued a Maryland Warrant for 350 acre for transporation of John Jordan, David Owen, Joshua Howler, Thomas Fitzwater, Elizabeth (llegible), Thomas Mackrell and Charity Tydings.Transportation was proved by Richard Tydings on October 9, 1682.[3] A copy of these entries are attached as an image. Perhaps researching William Battin, John Bagbie and George Puddington's origins would shed further light on this issue.

Charity Tydings was detached from Thomas Sparrow as his daughter as no proof has been found regarding her parents.

Here are the problems with this profile. I do think that these two need merged, but also need a serious cleanup. I took over this one. We know that Richard Tydings was married to Charity. We do not know that her name was Sparrow other than an from an unsourced findagrave. More importantly, we do know that Thomas Sparrow did not name Charity as one of his daughters in his Will. Richard Tydings was a co-executor which is interesting.

We also know that on August 13, 1682, Richard Tydings of Anne Arundel County was issued a Maryland Warrant for 350 acre for transportation of John Jordan, David Owen, Joshua Howler, Thomas Fitzwater, Elizabeth (llegible), Thomas Mackrell and Charity Tydings. Her son was under 21 in 1687 and her daughter, Charity Tydings was married in 1689. Charity Tydings was deceased by the time her husband wrote his will in 1687

There is an existing Charity Unknown Tydings profile which details all of this. I believe we should first merge the two Richard Tydings profiles. We should then merge the two Charity Sparrows and disconnect them from Thomas Sparrow with a research note detailing our action. We should then change the merged Charity Sparrow profile into a LNAB of unknown and merge it into Charity Unknown Tydings. Thoughts?

Hi Kathie: I tired to find the source for this information, but failed.

Richard Tydins 14.143 A AA £166.13.4 £9.3.8 May 14 1697 Received from: Mr. John Taylor (merchant) in London, Joseph Owens. Payments to: Col. Darnall. Legatees: wife (unnamed). Mentions: 5 children (unnamed). Executrix: Charity Tydins (daughter), wife of John Jordain of Kent County.

I think these are in the Kent County record, Liber 15, folio 143, see https://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagsere/se1/se4/000000/000020/html/06113.html, but I can't locate this record.

Can you help? Thanks. Bob

I didn't add it to the profile because I copied it from the Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties not from the original source. That transcript was taken from this web site: http://fzsaunders.com/tydings.html That web site does provide citations for all the transcribed records but I have not attempted to locate the originals.

I've removed Charity as the wife of Richard Tydings and added him as her father according to Rick Saunders' information below; however, there are some discrepancies and errors in this lineage that need to be corrected.

It would be best for someone with knowledge of this family to take over.

Thanks!

Julie

Sparrow-1285 and Sparrow-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death locations; similar dates. Same husband; duplicate daughters, too.

Charity who married John Jordain is the DAUGHTER of Richard Tydings, not his wife. Please see my source linked page at:

http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/tydings.html and particularly #40, which is the account of Richard Tydings' estate and states: "The account of John Jordain of Kent County who married Charity Tydins the daughter & Exx. [Executrix] named in the Last Will and Testament of Richard Tydins late of Ann Arrundell County deceased."

I have removed Charity as the daughter of Thomas Sparrow and Elizabeth Kinsey as the ages of these people would more likely indicate they were the same generation. Charity could possibly be the daughter of Thomas Sparrow the immigrant Sparrow-4 but there is very little evidence to support this. See the will of Thomas Sparrow II for evidence. She is not mentioned in his will, but he did mention his brother Solomon and his sister Elizabeth.

I have removed Charity as the daughter of Thomas Sparrow & Elizabeth Johns. There is a land record listing Thomas Sparrow & his children, there is no evidence that Charity was his daughter.

The date of Charity's birth ~1640 is 15 years before her mother's estimated birth in ~1655. This can't be right. Suggest this be researched.

I recommend (1) that 4 of 5 of the Richard Tydings (spouses) be removed and (2) Pretitia and Protasia be merged. It is possible that Protasia (& similar phonetic spellings) may have been a birth name while Pretitia may have been adopted @ (or shortly before) her marriage and thereafter. [email address removed]

There is a record of Charity Tydings in the Calvert Cliffs Quaker Meeting attending the wedding of Richard Galloway & Elizabeth Lawrence in 1686. If she married to a Richard Tydings before that time there is no evidence of him at this wedding. If she was a married woman her birth would be about 1668. There does not seem to be enough evidence to place her as the daughter of Thomas Sparrow.

Charity Sparrow is not mentioned in the will of Thomas Sparrow. If she is the daughter of Thomas Sparrow her birth would have to be 1675 and born after he wrote his will.
