Biography

Marriages

Margaret married (1) Peter Jones and (2) Thomas Cocke of Malvern Hill (by 1687, when they were named on a land record). Margaret was not the mother of Thomas' children.[1]
"Jones, Peter (1630/35-c87 Va.); m. Margaret Wood. Military Service; Landowner."[2]
Peter Jones b.ab 1634 d. 1679 / 1680 m. 1 June 1655, Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia[citation needed]
"Cocke, Thomas (1638-96) Va., m. Margaret (Wood) Jones. Sheriff; Coroner."[2]

Children

Margaret and Peter Jones' children:

Death

In the name of God Amen August 12th 1718. I Margaret Cocke of the County and Parish of Henrico Widow,... (transcript of her will)[8]
many online trees have 4 May 1718[9] or 1719, Malvern Hills, Henrico, VA, USA.[10]
Margaret Cocke, widow, wrote her will on 12 Aug 1718. It was recorded in Henrico Co., VA, on 4 Aug 1719. [11]
Legatees: Granddaughter Margaret wife of Edward Goodrich; Granddaughter Mary wife of John Worsham; Grandson Peter Wynne; Major Joshua Wynne; Granddaughter Margaret Jones; Mrs. Mary Randolph; Grandson Peter Jones (son of son Abraham Jones decd.); Grandson Joshua Wynne; Grandsons Robert Wynne, William Wynne and Francis Wynne; God son William son of William Randolph; Granddaughters (unnamed); son Peter Jones.[8][12][13]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth: Margaret was born about 1640 in Virginia.

1635, Charles City County, Virginia
1641/1642, Charles City, Virginia[9]
1641, Charles City County, Virginia
1641, Henrico, Virginia
1641, Richmond, Henrico, Virginia, United States.
about 1641, Richmond, Virginia, United States[10]
1642[14]

Name: Her maiden name is not known (LNAB changed from Wood to Unknown on 28 May 2021). Previously, I had removed "Mary" from her name (it had been included as both her preferred name & middle name). Abraham Wood did have a daughter named Mary (who married Thomas Chamberlaine). It was not this person, Margaret. ~ Liz Shifflett, March 18, 2015

Parents:

Most online trees presume that Margaret was the step-daughter of Abraham Wood, as he names in his will his grandchildren-in-law Abram Jones, Richard Jones, Peter Jones and William Jones.[1] I believe the "in-law" is because he was their guardian, because of his close association with their deceased father, Margaret's husband Peter.
R. Bolling Batte, who did extensive research on the extended Batte family of early Virginia, names her "Cruse" with a question mark:
  • "Par: James and Margaret (Lewellyn) Cruse ?" [15]
See the "Disputed Wives section" of Abraham Wood's profile for why they were not his wife (for example, James Cruse was executed for his part in Bacon's Rebellion, and Abraham Wood testified against him, so it is unlikely Abraham married his widow, or his daughter - if he had had one). Also note that Abraham Wood names only ONE child in his 1682 will (Mary, who married Thomas Chamberlayne).

Children Lacking Support:

A possible daughter named Elizabeth is suggested by Jones researcher Kathryn Gearhart, based on the an Elizabeth Jones being transported with a Margaret Llewellyn, sister of Martha (wife of wife of Richard Jones). However, the Richard who married Martha Llewellyn is not this Margaret's son. So, that Elizabeth Jones would more likely be from the the other Jones family (Richard Jones-11505's).
The Elizabeth Jones transported with Margaret Llewellyn could be Jones-23340, born 1666. While the birth date fits with Peter and Margaret, she is more likely to be a daughter of Richard Jones-11505 who married Martha Llewellyn.

  6. Richard, son of Peter and Margaret, is presumed to have died unmarried/childless, as Margaret's 1718 will does not mention him or any children who might be his.
  7. William is presumed to have died unmarried/childless, as his mother's 1718 will does not mention him or any children who might be his. that image - a page from Southside Virginia Families vol.1 (p. 219) - has the following comment:
This article - names Margaret as a Margaret Wood - the will of Abraham proves otherwise - it has been proven by the will and the laws of the time that Margaret was a step daughter- as Abraham lists the children "at law" meaning the were not his by kin

A very interesting article "The Will of Abraham Wood Analyzed" by Allen Cabaniss, University Research Professor of History at the University of Mississippi, in "The Colonial Genealogist" Vol 4, No. 1, 1771.

The author's conclusion after a very lengthy analysis of an actual copy of the original will: "....the unsupported evidence of this fragment is too fragile to be definitive in proving or disproving anything. Margaret may or may not have been Wood's daughter by blood and her children may or may not have been his grandchildren by blood. But this document (the Will of Abraham Wood) is not sufficient to warrant positive assertion one way or another."

Jones of Petersburg, The William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. 19, No. 4 (Apr., 1911), pp. 287-292 (6 pages), Published By: Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture

"To repress the Indian disturbances, which led to Bacon's Rebellion, garrisons were placed in 1676 in forts at various places on the frontier. At Major-General Wood's, at the falls of the Appomattox River 1. Major Peter Jones was put in command of 57 men from Elizabeth City, Warwick and James City counties. Although there is no direct proof, it is morally certain that he married a daughter of General Wood. This is shown by his occupying the same land, and by the constancy with which the names Abraham and Wood have reappeared among his descendants."

Extremely surprised to see the maiden name of WOOD removed from this profile. It appears that most of the controversy began with the words, "grandchildren in law." My understanding is that this simply means children of my daughter/son. This phrase may have been used (rather than grandchildren) because their father, Peter JONES, was deceased and the daughter, Margaret WOOD, had remarried to Thomas COCKE.

Margaret did name a son, Abraham Wood JONES.

Margaret's son, Peter JONES, named a son, Wood JONES.

from Abraham Wood's profile:

Warning The only known relative of Abraham Wood is his daughter, Mary (Wood) Chamberlayne, named in his will. (See Will and Research Notes sections below for details.)

And from the Disputed Children section of the Research Notes on his profile:

Abraham Wood in his will names one child: Mary Chamberlayne. Margaret, who married Peter Jones, is widely believed to have been his step-daughter (see their profiles and Space: Virginia Peter Joneses for more about them).

I have read all the sections you are quoting, I just happen to disagree.

I also believe that Richard Jones is a son of Peter JONES. Thus we have three brothers who married three sisters:

  1. Richard Jones born 1660 married Amy Batte;
  2. Abraham Wood Jones b 1662 married Martha Batte;
  3. Peter Jones born 1666 married Mary Batte.

If so, Richard Jones should be merged with Richard Jones

All these men named as grandson-in-law's of Abraham WOOD.

Additionally, from the profile of Peter Jones "By 1675, Abraham Wood and his son-in-law Peter Jones owned and operated a major trading operation from this site. Fort Henry "became the center of a vast Indian trade with the hinterland."'[4] Fort Henry had belonged to Peter's father-in-law Abraham Wood[5] and later became the property of the Jones family. It became the town of Petersburg, Virginia.[3]

Well I've about quit posting on the site since I don't seem to have any control over my own original information - they let whoever wants to add whatever they want it seems. I became frustrated with it all and am not surprised you found something wrong or odd. I show her name as Margaret Wood and that is what I originally uploaded.

Is "Wood" a maiden name or one of her married names?

Is there a primary source for the name "Wood"? Otherwise, the maiden name "Unknown" is appropriate?

update - LNAB changed to Unknown

Hi! It has been over a year and it appears that the maiden name of Peter's wife has no primary evidence to support it. I intend to change the LNAB from Wood to Unknown to help decrease confusion surrounding this Margaret and who her parents might have been (which is also unknown).

update - merge completed. for the disposition of the children that had been attached to Wood-15914, see this Changes page.

Wood-3916 and Wood-15914 appear to represent the same person because: i've sorted through all the profiles that had been attached to Wood-15914 & these profiles are ready to be merged. Thanks!

I've set Wood-3916 & Wood-15914 in an unmerged match. They appear to be intended to represent the same person, but Wood-15914 might be a mush of Wood-3916 and a later wife of Peter Jones (going through the children attached to Wood-15914 will help figure that out).

I've started working (again) on the Virginia Peter Joneses, which led me to look at this profile. She is not the daughter of Abraham Wood or Margaret Llewellyn (after reading that profile), so I'll detach them.

Perhaps the "in-law" status stemmed from Abraham's close association with her husband?

this profile had a database error - surprisingly, just the one (now resolved), although it has the "Serious Data Problems"... maybe a leftover category? I worked on this family in the past, and they are problemmatic, so I've protected the profile and added Virginia Project to support the PPP.

Woods-3412 and Wood-3916 appear to represent the same person because: Both of these are married to Peter Jones. Wood & Woods are spelling variations of the same surname.

posted on http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Powell-1389 (profile for Thomas's wife who was mother of his children)

Thomas Cocke Sr married the widow Margaret Jones by 1687 (when they made a deed). It was his wife Margaret Jones Cocke who died in 1718. (See details on Kathryn Gearhart's website on the Jones family, who says his "first wife appears to have been Agnes Powell, and she was the mother of his children.")

Abraham Wood's will had four "grandchildren in law" who are generally accepted as being the children of his step-daughter Margaret and her husband Peter Jones: Abraham Wood Jones, Peter Jones, Richard Jones, & William Jones. Whether or not Margaret and Peter had daughters cannot be determined from Abraham's will. Margaret's will names grandsons with the surname Wynne, so she had at least one daughter who married a Wynne. Indications are that she had no children by Thomas Cocke, her husband after Peter's death.

update - 5 years of research... no evidence Margaret is Abraham's step-daughter. His "grandchildren-in-law" are probably literally that - he was most likely named their guardian. Finding orphan records would be really helpful!

Per the following resource. Margaret was the daughter of James Cruse and the stepdaughter of Abraham Wood. Her last name at birth (and that of some of her siblings) should be "Cruse." <http://littleberrycox.com/jones&cocke.pdf />

Hi! I'm re-reviewing all the comments, getting ready to change Wood to Unknown. As I just posted as an edit to my own comment about her being Wood's stepdaughter:

I have also researched the Cruse/Llewellyn connection, and that's a no-go too (I'm currently still working on Margaret Llewellyn's profile - she married James Cruse, who was executed for his part in Bacon's Rebellion... Abraham Wood testified against him - his will named no spouse and no children, so his wife Margaret died before he did; the settlement of his estate declared that he left no children).

Cheers, Liz

I found this in my notes :

The name of Thomas Cocke's first wife does not seem to appear in any authenticated record. In numerous compiled lineages, it is given as Margaret Wood Jones, daughter of Col. Abraham Wood and widow of Peter Jones. She was the second wife of 11 Thomas Cocke, the wife who survived him and who is called "my loveing wife Margarett Cocke" in his will. The will of Margaret Cocke, dated 12 August 1718 and proved in Henrico County, Virginia, May 1719, is evidence that she was not the mother of any of Thomas Cocke's children. She names two of her Jones sons and several grandchildren, but does not mention any of Thomas Cocke's descendants. Charles Hughes Hamlin, a descendant of 11 Thomas Cocke and a certified genealogist, contends that Margaret was a step-daughter, not a daughter of Abraham Wood. By using the will of Abraham Wood as proof, he presents convincing argument to support his conclusions. Hamlin has a theory concerning the name of the first wife of 11 Thomas Cocke. He is justified in opposing the use of the name "Margaret Powell." James Cocke Southall, in correcting an earlier installment of his series of articles, says, "The children of Thomas Cocke2 were not by his second wife, Margaret Jones, but by his first wife, and she was probably a Powell. In this way, the names Stephen, James, and James Powell Cocke may have gotten into the family, and in this way James Powell Cocke4 may have met Martha Herbert (a relative), whom he married." Southall clearly indicates that this is a conjecture. There seems to be no basis for the use of the name Margaret and I suspect that it was picked up from records of the second wife -- perhaps the will of 11 Thomas Cocke. Zelma Wells Price give the name Agnes Powell as wife of 11 Thomas Cocke. It is more credible than Margaret, as she had a daughter named Agnes and the name reappeared in other generations, while the name Margaret did not. Unfortunately, Price does not give an exact source and efforts to find it have been unsuccessful. Hamlin, impressed by the repetition of Hamlin names, especially "Stephen - Agnes - and Abraham," thinks that the recurrence is signfificant. He supports his theory by giving specific examples of these names, beginning with Stephen Hamlin, who died about 1665 leaving a widow named Agnes.
