I'm an avid genie interested in filling in details about my ancestors' lives and, most importantly, getting it correct. I have a blog where I record my adventures in genealogy and posts dedicated to individual ancestors. I also hang out on the Thames Family Genealogists Facebook page.

About Me

After spending 42+ years working in administration in one form or another, I retired at the end of 2019 and moved to Costa Rica with my husband, where we live on the Pacific Coast in the province of Guanacaste, in the little beach village of Ostional. Instead of squeezing in genealogy research evenings and weekends, at last I have lots time to pursue my ancestors.

On Being a Genie

When I was a kid and teenager, I loved reading mystery novels and I wanted to be either an archaeologist or a private investigator (remember all those 1970's PI's on television, like Cannon, The Rockford Files, Mannix, Columbo, and Barnaby Jones?). Well, neither career happened, but the urge to track down evidence and solve mysteries segued perfectly into genealogy.

I first became interested in my family history research in 1988, at age 27, while attending a family reunion where my uncle Malcom Thames displayed a Civil War era rifle and told us about an ancestor who fought for the Confederacy. This was back when there was no Internet and work had to be done at archives, libraries and courthouses. I jumped right in, and there's been no going back.

I love taking deep dives into records to hunt down elusive ancestors and break down brick walls. Going down all those rabbit holes can be very enlightening!

As a member of DAR, I was my chapter's Registrar from the beginning of my membership in DAR through the entire time I was in the States, with a 3-year hiatus to serve as Chapter Regent. I also served on the America 250! Membership Task Force at the national level, part of a team formed to resolve difficult lineages for prospective members; I served on the task force for five years.

Now that I'm retired, I spend my time documenting my lineage, exploring those elusive ancestors and helping others with their research.

Biography

I was born at Peoria Methodist Hospital in 1961. I attended grade school and high school in Libertyville IL (1966-1972), Houston MN (1972-1975) and Fairbury IL (1975-1980), and attended Chicago city colleges, College of DuPage and Kaplan University throughout the years during my career. Working toward my degree in Finance and Accounting, I stopped pursuing it the minute the chairman of the board of trustees, to whom I reported directly, told me, "You don't need it." Yay!

My work career was primarily administrative, last working as Fund Administrator for 20 years and 9 months at IBEW9-MSECA Fringe Benefits Trust Funds at Tinley Park, IL.

I retired at the end of 2019 and moved with my husband Mark to Ostional, Guanacaste, Costa Rica in January 2020.

Hi, Rebecca,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi, Rebecca

I noticed your hyphenated name. If one was the name you were born with, please enter that in the Last Name at Birth field, and if the other is a married or current name, please enter that in the Current Last Name field. This will accurately reflect your name change.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Take care, Sheryl

Hi Sheryl. My legal surname is hyphenated, so I always use Thames-Simmons.
Welcome back to WikiTree, Rebecca!

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
