Would You Like to Participate in a One Name Study? (Mar 2021) [closed]

A One Name Study (ONS) is defined as a project which researches all occurrences of a surname, rather than a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).

One of the foundations of WikiTree is our commitment to collaboration, and we have expanded and clarified the guidelines for all ONS projects to ensure that each project serves as a collaborative platform that focuses on researching all occurrences of an individual surname across the globe.

Images_used_in_G2G-50.pngFrom here, individual team studies and research pages can then be used to branch out into specific methods or areas of interest; such as geographically (SURNAME's of England), by time period (SURNAME's of the 18th Century), or by topic (e.g., SURNAME DNA, SURNAME Occupations, or SURNAME Statistics/Facts).

Are you ready to get started with a One Name Study? There are many ways to join!

  1. You can join an existing Name Study;
  2. You can adopt a Name Study that needs an ONS Coordinator; or
  3. You can start a new Name Study by emailing the ONS Project Leaders!

Stop by the One Name Study Project page for more information on How To Join!

Requirements

To coordinate a study: 90 days membership at WikiTree and at least 1,000 contributions. There is a limit of 3 studies per coordinator. Please do not request a new study if you do not meet these requirements. See: [[Space:Name Study Coordinator Duties]]

To participate in a study: Everyone is welcome to participate.

If you respond, please let us know in your response which study you are interested in.

I am looking to start a One Name Study for the surname Kynaston. Have sent an email.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Amy, I tried to add a Knapp ONS  sticker to a profile but it came up red. I went to the Knapp Name Study Page and it seems that someone composed a page of several surnames.

Hello,

I'm interested in starting 2 ONS:

  • Boudreau, Boudreaux, Boudrot, and other variations still to be discovered
  • Primeau, Primo, Primot, Primaut, Primeaux, again with all it's variations
I want to concentrate the studies in geographic areas (migration patterns), name variation over time, and hopefully, this will lead me to the origin and root of the names.

I am interested in undertaking a ONS for the Surname MURDOCH.   My primary interest is having a study of the MURDOCH families (including their spouses) in the parish of Auchinleck and some of the adjoining parishes such as Old Cumnock, Ochiltree, Sorn and Mauchline.    Is it possible to have a ONS with a number of sub-categories set up such as on the lines of:

One Name Studies (ONS)

…..Murdoch ONS (MONS)

……….MONS-Scotland  (capture any Murdochs not in the specified sub categories of Scotland

…………..MONS-Ayrshire (capture any Murdochs not in specified parishes of Ayrshire)

………………..MONS-Auchinleck

………………..MONS - Ochiltree

………………..MONS – Old Cumnock

………………..MONS – Sorn

........................MONS - Mauchline

………………..MONS – Muirkirk

Using this structure makes it flexible for any specific region to be added in the future.

I note there is an existing ONS for variant MURDOCK – all profiles are in USA except for the MURDOCH ones I started to add to that study.

I would like to establish a separate MURDOCH ONS as outlined above and place a cross link in both FSP pages.   What is your advice.  Is this possible?

Hi Hugh

I'll have a look at this and be in touch by private message.

I would be happy to start One Name Studies for Boultbee, Holbech and Gresley. I already have most of the members of these families in my own database.

I also have a large number of LeGrys

Please advise on next steps.

Many thanks

Looking forward to collaborating on the Shaw ONS! I've traced 173 Shaws from my grandmother to Thomas Shaw of Massachusetts, where I hit a brick wall. I hope for some answers as well as providing answers to others.

Hello

I would like to join the one name study for the last name of Harmon.

My ancestor is John Lincoln Harmon 1750-1825

She was born 1770 in Prince Edward County, Virginia and buried in traders Point, Marion County, Indiana, USA

There is also the one name study for the name Byrd also that sound good.  How do we choose the person to search?
