People Who Died Young Sticker Change?

Just to expound on this, I use the sticker for the sake of categorizing, but I've always been very uncomfortable about it. I'm okay doing it with relatives that I know are Catholic, etc., but as an atheist I personally would not want an angel on my profile, and I'd especially feel uncomfortable putting the label on an indigenous profile, etc. I think it's something we should especially consider as more people from non-Western countries are being added.

We need a sticker option that is not so Christian-centric, especially as WikiTree continues to grow and more people from other cultures are added.

If you are interested in a floral image, I have some at the bottom of this page. I just put one of the forget-me-not images into the died young template on the profile for this child and it looks nice. There are also some images which you might find preferable on this "Remember the Children" page. If you have some other type of image in mind, please let us know. I can look to see what I can find and I know others, like Melanie Paul, would probably be willing to search also. Melanie is very good at creating images, but I'm sure it would help her to know what you would find more appropriate.

I have a few images here
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:RTCimages#Assorted

And this one

I also have a bunch yet to upload.  (I played with a number of alternate images before the parameter was added.)

I like the butterfly imagery, Melanie.
Since a lot of the profiles I work on are Mexican/Mexican American, I ended up creating a marigold template.

These are all great options! I think flowers/butterflies/nature in general is probably a safer bet when a person's beliefs are a question mark.
I like the butterfly imagery, Melanie.

I like the lotus imagery, and the butterflies.  (It's why I did so many!)
While the lotus may be somewhat "eastern", butterflies are pretty universal in appeal.  Add in a variety of flowers, and there's usually something to please most.  (I'm not sure if I have the rest of my butterfly and flower images for children anywhere accessible, as I created them on the machine where the processor fan went kaput, and I cannot remember if I backed them up to one of the Seagate drives.)

I am more than happy to create other images if I know what is wanted.

Can someone tell me how to "hide" the background image from the list of images on the right side of the profile page? Everytime I add a background it shows up as one of the images on the right! Thanks.
I created a free space page for all of my background images and anything I don't want on the sidebar, and then I link from there.
Yes, I did that too, but the "background" image still shows up as an image on the sidebar. Other pages, such as here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hooks-719

seem to have "hidden" the background image... it only shows one image on the side, the "profile" image. How is that??
To use a background image but have it NOT show on the side bar of the profile, you simply remove the profile from the image.  So long as the image is still attached to the space page that houses it, it will remain for others to also use.

So - add the profile to the image and save the image, then set as background, then remove the profile from the image.
Wow, I tried that and it worked! Thanks Melanie... I never knew that trick... it's funny how it works, I don't quite understand how the background stays when the profile is removed, but I am happy to be able to do that now!!

I think it works because the background was set, but not unset.  (I've not actually tried that because I always want the image as the background.)  I know you can remove the background without replacing it by way of the profile's edit screen.  (This does not wok on space pages, though, as there are no images visible on the right side when in edit mode.)

Edited to add -- above speculation proven.  If you unset the background image before removing the profile, the profile will have no background.

According to the help page for that sticker (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Died_Young) you can actually use any alternative image that you feel is more appropriate. You do that by using the parameter |image= followed by the name of the image you want to use (there is an example using a ribbon instead of an angel on the help page).

Thanks, good to know. I'll probably set up my own template to copy/paste from.

I just wish the sticker didn't default automatically to Christianity. It probably doesn't affect too many profiles right now, but it will as the site continues to grow.

I've never viewed the sticker as anything other than an indication a person lived only a short while. Nor did I find the commonly used acronym for find a grave offensive, as I knew it was referring to a catalogue of graves. It can be argued that any sticker is pointless as the info is contain in the data field as well as included in the biography.

As far as the cherubim symbol, as this sight continues to grow, any recognition of Christianity will be deemed offensive and inappropriate by those who are in opposition to it.

Well...my indigenous friend whose grandmother and other relatives were repeatedly raped and beaten at Catholic boarding schools would probably be offended if you put a cross on their profiles, yes.

But it's not about being "in opposition" to "any recognition" of Christianity. It's about being culturally sensitive and not making assumptions when you don't know someone's background, especially if you're working on strangers' profiles.
Well said Melissa, I completely agree.
