CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Thank you for the information M.  Thankfully all of my daffodils are old established plants.  They are such a sunny welcome flower.
This is why cruises are off my list. I'll put weddings off my list too this fall and the nasty winter. I hope your daughters get better soon.

I'll be getting both vaccines (Flu and COVID) in the fall. I'll be on the waiting list. I'll test myself every two days if I have to.
Hope your kids are on the mend Pip, and enjoy those naps!
Tulips. I need tulips. No one sells them around here, so I guess I'll have to go online to see what is available (and affordable).
Both are well, Eileen, and both back at work. My older one, the paramedic and educator, missed the whole first week (for teachers) and even the open house. The other rather enjoyed her stay at home, but (alas for her) she too is back to work.
I'm so glad your church mom is leaving her legacy through you. May you lead your church son well.

I have a similar spelling conundrum with my Soltysiaks (where of course, spelling mistakes abound) but for some reason, some branches started spelling it with an A, Saltysiak. Sometimes within the same generation of 8 kids, four would spell with and O and four with an A. What?!
Erin, I had to laugh: 8 kids, half spelling it one way, etc. This sounds so much like my family!!!

Is this Farrar one of yours Pip?Asa Allen Farrar

It appears not. Mine are from Virginia, Asa has ancestry in New Jersey. That doesn't rule out that they are kin, but I just took a quick look.
I thought I tracked him back go Pennsylvania Oh well

Top of the morning from the battlefield. One hundred sixty-one years ago today, the civilians of Lone Jack were overwhelm with grief as they finished digging two eighty foot trenches for the approximately 300 dead that were killed two days prior. It was slow going as only old men and women were left to complete the task in the 100 plus degree heat. Countless homes were used to nurse men, from both sides  of the conflict, back to health. Family of the fallen examined corpses hoping to identify loved ones to be  taken home for private burials in family cemeteries. Those who remain, lie next to one another in one of the only cemeteries in the country where Confederate and Union troops were buried together.

Lucinda Cave, the only female civilian killed in the battle, suffered a chest wound and lingered several days before dying from infection. It is speculated she caught a stray bullet while tending to her infant child. She was caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place as she was the proprietor of the hotel that was used by the Union as a field hospital, until it was determined that it was also being used as a vantage point to fire upon the Confederates. At that time , twelve men were said to approach and set ablaze the hotel. Of the twelve men, eight were killed. Three of the known survivors were Kit Dalton, Cole Younger, Frank James and an unidentified combatant…. Sorry, I got carried away I am covering the Museum today and working on my lickspittle for the visitors. By chance, thanks to connection finder, I have determined Lucinda and I share a distant grandmother. I am certain people, other docents, think I am full of myself as I keep finding connections to the founding members of Lone Jack. I remind them that my family moved to the other side of the county about the same time.

by K Smith G2G6 Pilot (372k points)
Hiya, K. Y'all doing anything special for the anniversary of the battle?
I'm not sure exactly what to expect. We have some stuff planned but, have had some cancellations. Weather always seems to play a role. I'm going to cover the museum and catch what I can.
Let us know how it went, K.
We did get the Big Boy tee shirts with John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn on it. I told them I was good for at least 2 4x's. Hopefully, they will be there tomorrow. I can finally have a work uniform, I'm so excited.
Well Pip, pretty much what I expected. I was surprised by the female scout leader. Boy scouts raised the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance. A local civil war buff gave about a 5 minute presentation/dedication for the 61 annual commemoration since the museum opened in 1963 when Give 'em Hell Harry attended the dedication. The Honor Guard gave a 7 gun salute and the museum opened for business. Business as usual. I have to do some fact checking nut, I heard it said 42% of all civil war battles in 1861 occurred in Missouri. Seems high to me but, I know many occurred around here.
Hmm... that is a rather high count for the total %age of Civil War battles to be fought in Missouri.

That was my thought but, that is what the presenter stated during his presentation. Before I could corral him, he was gone. I will try and get his name and number and get his sources on that.9 Facts You May Not Know About Missouri During The Civil War This might be where he obtained the info stated.

Missouri did have the third most battles fought in the civil war with about 1,200. Only Virginia and Tennessee had more. The battle of Lone Jack may well have been forgotten if not for Harry Truman. The Union was less than pleased when Col Foster and Co were dispatched to disrupt recruiting efforts and suffered a unexpected defeat instead.

O. C. California

(Note FYI: O. C. California is "Orange County", California)

Unauthorized parody by Dave Draper

Sung to the tune of "Hotel California" by the Eagles

Here is the music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BciS5krYL80

  • Copy and paste link in a new window, then come back and try to sing along!
  • I was heading down the highway
  • In the cool County air
  • Looking at all the buildings
  • Rising up in the air
  • Up ahead in the distance
  • I turned right at the light
  • I had to park the car and run inside
  • Before they closed for the night
  • At a desk near the doorway
  • I rang the desk top bell
  • And I was thinking to myself
  • "This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
  • Then she came I asked her
  • I asked her, “Show me the way”
  • There were voices down the corridor
  • They yelled out, “Come this way!"
  • Welcome to the O. C . California
  • In the records place
  • (in the records place)
  • Such a lovely place
  • Plenty of records in the O. C. California
  • Any Time of year
  • (any time of year)
  • You can find them here!
  • Sat at a table that listed
  • It’s got a leg that’s been bent
  • In here are lots of little noisy boys
  • They’re just demons
  • I wished they go in the courtyard
  • I’m starting to sweat
  • Found records to remember
  • Found some to forget
  • So I called up the desk clerk
  • Are the Census to find?”
  • She said, “We haven’t those records here
  • Since 1969”
  • And still those voices are calling from far away
  • Sat my lap top on the table to the right
  • Then I heard them say:
  • Welcome to the O. C . California
  • In the records place
  • (in the records place)
  • Such a lovely place
  • Plenty of records in the O. C. California
  • Any Time of year
  • (any time of year)
  • You can find them here!
  • Bars on the Windows
  • Something don’t look right
  • Lady said there’s a problem here, no
  • Internet tonight
  • And in the managers office
  • They gathered for a meet
  • They came; said, “You can’t do that!”
  • “Get off that WikiTreee!"
  • Last thing I remember, I was
  • Running for the door,
  • Grabbed my lap top away from me
  • And smashed it on the floor
  • “Relax,” said the night man
  • “The program is Ancestry
  • You can only search on Find A Gave
  • But never on WikiTree!”

Hi all!

On the genealogy front, we are still inputting 7600+ men into the 95th Bomber group from WWll. Also starting on the PLPOW list of 3,384 (of acknowledged dead the Union admitted to, leaving off 11,000+ men who are NOT listed there) men who died there.

Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!

EDIT:

I am so used to just sitting here waiting that I ALMOST forgot to report on the status of my 2 original DNA kits that I ordered from MyHeratige.com on JULY 27TH!!!

Last Sunday, my 2nd shipment of the 2 DNA kits were SLOWLY making their way to me & I was looking at a delivery date of last Wednesday.

Got a call from MH CS & was told that the information that I got regarding my LAST shipment was wrong. She cancelled that order for me & is sending out ANOTHER 2 kits to me. Evidently, despite 7 email messages & 5 telephone calls, plus their ASSURANCES that the second shipment was going to the proper address, they sent it to the original WRONG address!

So, again, here I sit, waiting on those 2 DNA kits that AGAIN, have a tracking number & have YET to be taken to the post office for delivery. And no, I STILL can't cancel it or get my money back because I "have to let the system process the original order."

There are reasons why Elmira was dismantled, and all traces eliminated by years end of the war. Nothing to see here, literally. I can't remember, was it Andersonville or Elmira that had viewing towers and charged admission to view prisoners who were starved and dying from exposure.
It was Elmira, NY. The tower platform was built by the Means brothers who charged 10¢ to view the prisoners (ChemungHistory.com). Another "great" event in history brought to you by the atrocities of the Civil War.
In a haste to lay blame for the lack of humanity during the war it is often overlooked that the worst conditions were in the final year of the war when Lee and Davis conspired to suspend the prisoner exchange agreement, or was it Lincoln and Grant? I guess to paraphrase a more recent politician, "What difference does it make?"

I think they built two towers if not mistaken. An argument could be made for which prison was the worst.
One of these days the Truth will be known; ALL of it. When the Truth comes out, I wonder how many people will be able to accept how things REALLY are as opposed to how we've been conditioned to perceive & beLIEve?
Hi Pat,

I think one thing researching genealogy can do is break through the "schoolbook history" perspective and give current generations a chance to encounter past events from a very personal perspective - with all the challenges that brings with it. My late mother used to warn me that I probably had ancestors who fought on both sides of most major wars. Living in Germany and experiencing some of the work done (especially with youth groups) to encourage Germans, Israelis, French and Russians to engage with each other as real human individuals rather than stereotypes has been an eye-opening experience. It takes courage to accept that atrocities are (and were) committed by "people just like us", without descending into self-hatred or defensiveness. It takes strength to focus on doing everything we can to avoid repeating the worst mistakes of the past as we help our children (and theirs) build a better future. "One of these days the Truth will be known" - let's hope and pray that it will be accepted in the spirit of mutual respect and forgiveness...

And that's EXACTLY what I am here for. To research & investigate for myself why both my parents belonged to 2 different secret societies that thought nothing of sacrificing children to get themselves ahead in the world & to get them more power.

Obviously I wasn't sacrificed, but that never stopped them from blaming me for everything that was wrong in the family because I was allowed to live. Not sure how much living there was as opposed to just trying to survive with my life & my sanity.

But as they both came from secret societies, both of which are world-wide, they weren't alone in their beliefs. Many is the atrocities that children world-wide have had to live through thanks to these 2 & other secret societies.

I know all about brainwashing first hand. I also know personally what lengths people will go to to deny their responsibility in any of it & continue to blame the victims.

I also know how organizations that are there to "help" can either be manipulated or are part of the secret societies that have persecuted these children. This is NOT a new concept. This is just a different branch of atrocities already being seen throughout the world as evidenced by the wars & their aftereffects. It is all just being perpetrated on children that are hidden away from society so those in the societies can continue their mandates. WHERE ARE THE MISSING CHILDREN? Every year, 8 MILLION children go missing; EVERY YEAR!!! 800,000 form the US alone.

I am simply using the vehicle of war to open peoples eyes that there are facts that have never come out that was practiced & perpetrated on these men. And if this line of atrocities can be proved & shown that "history" doesn't have it right here, then maybe it can be proved that there are other victims of this way of being that haven't come to light yet.

Others outside these secret societies for the most part don't even know this is happening. But when someone comes out with facts of either the condition of the prisons or the treatment of children, those in the societies are very quick to label those that are outspoken as liars & making others beLIEve it. It's THESE people that I worry about.

They didn't participate, they didn't even know, but when the subject came up, they were easily led to another conclusion because people don't act this way in their world. THOSE are the people that I am concerned about.

I think what is going on in the world with the youth is WONDERFUL! Whole groups of people who are getting together to find the TRUTH about what has been said & done. That's why I chose to align myself with WikiTree, for the CONCEPT & for the validation of TRUTH.

What has to be overcome is not just what was said about each group in order for other groups to align themselves against, but the acceptance that this is ok. Look at every aspect of life & you will find places that this concept is alive & well, permeated throughout our society that this treatment is ok & is in accepted use every day; you follow sports teams? There is Truth about them too, other than just the win/lose aspect of the concept.

THIS is the type of thing I worry about those that are on the outside looking in will experience. How they were conditioned & brainwashed into accepting the small baby steps that lead up to the atrocities.

One of my favorite authors is Thomas Sowell. Pretty dry reading for the most part, as it is fact after fact after fact with a conclusion formulated based on facts. Like WikiTree, sources and facts support the conclusion. One of his quotes that is ever-present in my mind while reading history is the truth is often very simple, concealment is often very complicated. Another person I consider while reading history, for no other reason than he was a master orator and manipulator, is Hitler. Hitler said, the bigger the lie the more it needs to be told before it will be believed. Another perspective I've considered since high school came from (a wealth of information) from an old co-worker some 50 plus years older than me. One of the many things he told me rings true every time I consider reasons for war. His philosophy was also quite simple, let those that benefit the most from, and start the wars, fight the wars, and there would be no wars. So, as I chew through the pages of history, I often weigh the information as I consume it. With that said, I question why more than 17,000 books have been written on Lincoln with over three times as many written on the civil war. Oh, I almost forgot, follow the money, poor people are the result of  war, not the cause.
I utilize all sources in order to find the truth, then I go investigate for myself. I follow the money & question everything. Along with Lincoln & the Civil War, there are other areas of questionable activities; is the government telling us the truth, or are we going to find out that they were behind most of the atrocities perpetrated on us  throughout our short history?
of the people, by the people, for the people..... you would think someone would have been held accountable for something by now. Mark Twain said politicians are like diapers and should be changed often and for the same reason.
Keep an eye on South Africa.

Hi all chatters!

My week started with me getting back to work after three weeks of vacation. Work is a good way to get some more structure back to life, but our dog is not very fond of being left at home alone.
Last week Sweden was hit by a storm by the name Hans. There was a lot of flooding in different areas and fallen trees. Myself, I did not get much of it except very wet rain and some thunder and lightning.

Thanks to Pip who looks after us every weekend!

I wish everyone on the chat a lovely weekend!

Oh, by the way I had found a cool photo in an online archive, that I added to my ancestor's profile today! It's the teachers of Lund cathedral school in the year 1865! (Click to see in larger version.)

and even better, it has a reverse side with all the names!

Hi Cousin David, but only 21 degrees using the connection finder. laugh

Now, that photo find is a whopping big treasure to discover. Congrats to YOU, Maria!
Great find Maria! Glad you didn't have to cope with flooding after your vacation. That would have been a harsh transition.

Thank you Pip and Momo! heart

Currently, it's 17˚ C and partly cloudy in Fort Erie, just 2˚ short of the predicted high of 19˚ C. Since it's not even 10:00 yet, my guess is that we're going to exceed the predicted high.

The light of my life and the delight of my eyes and I are still getting over jet lag after spending some time in Europe at a conference. Her mobility has gone down over the past few months, so I ordered wheelchair service at each of the airports on our itinerary. The worst service we got was at Toronto Pearson Airport on the way out, although things were so bad the day we flew that it must have generated lots of complaints, because the service had improved by the time we got home. (It still wasn't great, but it was better than it was outbound.) The best service was at Copenhagen, where the wheelchair attendant actually guided the light of my life and the delight of my eyes right to her seat on the plane.

We went a few days early, partly to take some vacation time. That was partly to give us a chance to get adjusted to European time so we'd be conscious and useful during the conference, and partly to introduce the light of my life and the delight of my eyes to some of the people I worked with at a sort of retreat centre for refugees shortly after the signing of the Dayton Accord, and some of the places and foods that I had come to love during that time. As it happens, the food she enjoyed most was the Kebab u Lepinji at a place called
Rio Kebab, which probably wasn't even around when I was there. She bit into it, and said, "Oh my word" so many times that we took to calling them "Oh my word sandwiches." (I must say that, somehow, using lepinji instead of pita makes kebabs even better. I didn't know that was possible.)

The night before we flew out of Rijeka, it rained pretty hard, and the news said that there was flooding in parts of Ljubljana, so I hope Aleš and his family are okay.

I think I only had time for one session on WikiTree the whole time we were gone, so all the pages I've been maintaining are sadly neglected, although I did manage to get the Largest Unconnected Branches page back up to 100 branches yesterday. Now, I'm partway through the Unconnected Canadian Politicians page.

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (680k points)
I hope you got the possibility to swim in the Mediterranean too? That part of Croatia is awesome.
Europeans know how to do it right, would you agree, Greg?

"Oh my word sandwiches." Perfect name for something that good. I am going to have to try one of those. Wi8ll have to settle for a ham & cheese for now. Some day, though!

Sadly, no, Maria. The light of my life and the delight of my eyes hadn't gotten to travel much before we met, and her first trip on a plane was to come visit me when I was still living in North Vancouver. During that time, she got to wade and splash in the Pacific Ocean, so I set myself a goal to let her wade in each of the Seven Seas. Unfortunately, she hasn't had the opportunity to wade (partly because the beaches in Croatia are filled with tourists lying elbow-to-elbow at this tome of year, but also because of her mobility issues), but at least now she has seen the Pacific, Indian, and Mediterranean from up close. Just four more seas to go.

Pip, maybe we should plan for you and Mrs. Pip to come along the next time we get a chance to go to Croatia.

I still haven't gotten the list of unconnected former mayors (and reeves) on the Unconnected Canadian Politicians page up to three per target city yet, but with the addition of a former mayor of Saskatoon, I have finally managed to find at least one profile for an unconnected deceased former mayor or reeve for all 28 target cities on the list. (And I also moved all of the profiles listed in the Canada, Mayors category to lower-level categories: at least to the province or territory, if not to the specific city.)

Greg, sorry you were not able to take a swim. I am saving up to try and go back to Croatia next year or the year after. I love the Croatian pebble beaches and the rock beaches. And the salty water. I mostly stay in the water, I don't lay on a beach if I can help it. laugh

Well, even if I cannot make it to Croatia, Greg, you might run into my daughter and her son-in-law. They are planning on spending some time there.

It's been a few weeks since I posted. I'm almost done with my class. One more assignment left to do. I gotta get busy as I think it's due on Sunday night.

I've been doing the usual stuff.

  • Added photos. Found photos I haven't seen before for various people.
  • DNA matches. I'm up to 113 matches now. Found some new "confident" levels for various people in my tree.
  • Fixes on my Suggestion List
  • Found various marriage records. This is to fill in missing gaps in my tree.
  • Prune my tree from unlikely connections
I'm sure there are many other things too. Can't think of them all at the moment.

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps!

What a week it's been! It's been raining off and on and the road construction still continues. My parents often have errands to do and the people working on the road keep blocking the driveway. I'm like "Don't they realize people LIVE here?" I mean are they trying to cause a problem? My mother asked one of the guys about it and he just shrugged. Ugh...

But, the craziness outside didn't stop me from writing a blog about strength. Check it out here: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2023/08/52-ancestors-week-33-strength.html

In other news, a few weeks ago a new user on WikiTree found her father's profile here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gariepy-502

To make a long story short, the lady asked what my connection was to him and it turns out she is my 2nd cousin once removed. We talked via email and now we're friends on the book of Face. Turns out she is relatively close by and she made a post about everything. So, we talked there and other family members chimed in. She was already Facebook friends with one of my mom's cousins so it was only a matter of time before more Legaults popped into the fray.

It was great talking to her and I saw a few pics of her dad. He kinda looked like Geoge Clooney. That was pretty awesome.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Enjoy the blog!
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (769k points)

That is a great story Cousin Chris! Maybe I'm related toooooo!heart

Chris, pretty son our town is going to start the paving of downtown. Seeing what you've experienced, I bet you know what headaches this is going to cause! Fortunately, there is an alternate parallel route. Unfortunately, everyone will be using it. Gracious! They took away 17 parking spaces and reroute traffic to create those bump outs and such earlier this year on Main and Broad. Now this!

You need to grab that 2c1r and get some stories to flesh out those profiles!

Anything from San Pietro?
@ David: Perhaps. If you've got Quebec, chances are good you are related.

@ Pip: Nope. I may have to write a new letter to them.

Well, at least it's finally infrastructure week. =D Let's hope your construction goes quickly! Good luck!

And I'll see if she wants to participate on the site. I hope she tells me some more stories. I told her one she never heard. Apparently my mom went blueberry picking with her aunt who is also on WT.
Great story Chris! Donald Gariepy is my 8th cousin.

Hiya Chris, Agree this is a great place for making friends with your cousins, and also folks who turn out not to be your cousins! (You and I however, are 10th cousins, even tho I'm not Italian, a failing, I know, lol)

How true, how true!

This year we have had, mostly, clear blue skies and a couple of moderate hot spells, one in the Spring, another, fading this week.   Last weekend, feeling somewhat low in spirits, I only followed answers and comments, on the Chat and Kathy went on to note, on Facebook, that two of our adult grandchildren had lost a stepfather, to a heart attack, and following that two of our adult children, one living in Oahu with her family and the other on vacation in London, England with his family, had, also, just lost a stepfather, to a heart attack.   The last two days, our son-in-law's mid eighty year old father, who we help care for on the 'farm', seems to be slipping away, peacefully, due to the last stages of cancer......he appears to want to join his wife who passed away some years ago.   This morning wildfires have reached the other side of West Kelowna, where my friend (best man at my wedding in '68) lives......as the world goes by.............
by John Thompson G2G6 Pilot (353k points)
John, in my life, I have come to see that things like this happen in clusters. There is the break for a fer years, and then it starts all over again. Y'all hang in there, my friend. We care about you and Kathy!
I am running out of family to mourn, and my friends are adding up quick. I think I will vow to not make any new friends unless they are at least 30 years younger than me. My Wiki friends excluded.
Pip, today our thoughts are with those families that are being affected by fires, wherever they might be.......being part of a WikiTree family means a lot.
K, I spoke with 'Grampa Dick', as he was having a smoke, on the porch, while his son was preparing to take him to a doctor's appointment......they are slow returning which may indicate a visit to the hospital.
Hopefully they just stopped by the smoke shop for some exotic tobacco.
How right you are, K, they just stopped for some 'medicine' on the way home......hospitals are not on 'Grampa Dick's' bucket list.
(((Hugs))) John, to you and your family. All these fires everywhere have me feeling sad too, for the land, the people and especially for the animals that lived there.

Thankyou for the Hugs, Liza. smiley  Saturday evening we received word that our daughter's brother-in-law and family, who had been on fire alert in the Shuswap Lake region, had evacuated and are travelling to their other home near us.  PS  Our daughter, through Kathy's first marriage, is your 8th cousin once removed.

I decided to leave town and head for Las Vegas through the weekend.  Oddly, it will be my first experience of a hurricane since I lived in Texas 30 years ago.  Also I will get the rare experience of seeing water in the rivers here. Maybe I will take some time and get lucky at the tables too. Let’s hope that gets added to the odd list for Las Vegas.

While here, I decided to help out on a one place study for Holman, New Mexico.  Not a lot has been done in this county so it could use the help.  It is rural and largely Hispanic but I got a few cemeteries added and started with a profile that I was able to connect to the world tree.  (I don’t like adding profiles that just accumulate on my unconnected list so I make this a requirement anytime I start adding unrelated profiles to Wikitree).  So now I am filling in some people and more categories.
by Gurney Thompson G2G6 Pilot (458k points)
Gurney, did you ever finish with that huge cemetery you were working on a while back? I can't remember.

Enjoy your trip and good luck at the tables.
I find it strange that the southwest may be experiencing a hurricane! Be safe.
I did finish one a couple years ago that was 1600+ graves.  The second one I halted about 1500 graves into the 3300+ that existed. I was getting too many unconnected profiles and also the CC7 started up around then so I just switched gears.
All the phones in the casino went off at the same time as the thunderstorms rolled in today sounding the alarm for flash floods. The rains just started.
Sounds like a good double down opportunity. Good Luck!
Please be safe Gurney! I was watching a news feed out of L.A. this afternoon, and while they were broadcasting an earthquake happened. Only 5.1, (near Ojai) thank goodness, and unrelated to the tropical storm, but it sure threw the newscasters for a loop. (One natural disaster at a time, tyvm, they said) I'm not worried as much about landslides because nothing is saturated, but flash floods are no joke.

Howdy folks! Greetings from, a once again, broiling central Oklahoma, US of A! We had a nice break from the heat earlier this week, and the mornings are nice in the 70s, but as soon as the noon whistle starts blowing we are screaming towards 100+. A lot of us scream as well. laugh The weather sites that I follow say to expect this through the rest of the month with very little chance of rain. I'm ready for usual 4 days of fall.

Tomorrow the grandbaby and the others are coming over for family dinner! I haven't gotten to see her since the 4th of July, so I am ready!! I'm going to make my Firehouse Machaca Verde Tacos. I wouldn't call them authentic by any stretch, but they are tasty!

I have begun Project Reclaim the Back Yard. There is an old, poorly constructed chain link fence that goes around a portion of the back yard that was put up by the previous owner. Over the years, vines and trees have grown up and through the chain link so I'm starting to tear all of that out. Once I'm done clearing, leveling, and getting the grass to grow nice and thick,  it will be a nice play area for the grandbaby. This will be a work in progress for a while. It's a lot of work, and "the older I get the better I was" is a saying I've been using lately. laugh

Genealogy wise I had an interesting chat with a cousin of mine the other day. She asked if my great grandpa Vaskies name was John. (She's a cousin from my grandmother's side, the Sieferts.) I told her it was. She bought a 1929 Elkville HS (IL) yearbook and there was a John Vaskie in it. It was actually my grandfather's oldest brother! She sent me some copies of his class picture along with football and basketball pics. He died of ALS when his brothers, my grandfather and great uncle Albert, were fighting in WWII, so I never got to meet him. I was so excited because I have very few pictures of him, and I couldn't stop thanking her. heart

Thanks Pip for being the host with the most, and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Until next time....

John

John, you kill me every time you mention the food you are making! Machaca Verde Tacos indeed!

You are not kidding that the fence clearing and removal will be a work-in-progress. Except for the fence part, I remember that at my old place I had to remove anywhere from ten to forty feet of vines, sawtooth briars, and invasive privet along the borders of our property. Took about a year to do the whole thing. I was mighty proud of myself at the time.

I love that you cousin knew ow interested you'd be with those old photos in the yearbook. I really am so very glad for you.
Thanks Pip!

If the back yard turns out half as good as it looks in my head, it will be awesome.

The machaca is super easy to make. Here's the recipe for anyone who wants it.

1 chuck roast

1 can Rotel (tomatoes and chilis)

1 cup water

1 jar of your favorite salsa verde

1 bunch cilantro, chopped

Put the roast, Rotel, and water in the crock pot on high until fork tender. Take roast out of the crock pot and shred, discarding the fat. Strain the tomatoes and chilis, saving a cup of the broth. Put the shredded roast in a skillet and reheat, adding the jar of salsa verde, tomatoes, broth, and half of the chopped cilantro, stirring until everything is mixed well.

Once heated, make tacos with your favorite tortillas, and use the left over cilantro as a garnish. I usually chop onions and jalapenos as a garnish, along with some queso fresco.

Its one of our favorites
Is Grandpa John's home-made fresh baby food on the menu?
As soon as all of my butternut squash ripens enough, it will be!
John, I copied and printed out the recipe! Thanks!
No problem Pip! I hope you enjoy it!

I am glad to be here in Everett, Washington. The hour is early enough for neighbors to be watering, before the heat of the day. The flies inside the house are waking up and will trouble us. Flypaper has been set aside for daughter to put up (it's a pain to unroll and hang). We slept with windows open and fans going.

I have no plans today except to play around on Wikitree until I get exhausted, and then take a nap.

Tuesday our chapel had a procession for the Feast of the Assumption in the late afternoon, followed by a ceremony at an altar in a city park next to the church. The Greek chant was beautiful. Two ladies in the church had mercy on me. One offered me a fan, which I at first refused, but then decided that it was better to be moving the air instead of melting in a sleepy heap. Another granted me a dispensation from kneeling on the gravel, because of my age. I smiled a bit and decided I should stand. Due to my knee, I cannot kneel and keep my back straight.

I am still working on finding a connection for former Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Cortez Kennedy. This is about the 4th or 5th USBH notable I have sought to connect. It's always an adventure. You never know but what that next person will be the connection. Pruning my watchlist is also a challenge afterwards.

Still looking forward to that root canal next week; still masticating soft foods, avoiding steak, and oatmeal every breakfast.

I printed out a pedigree chart for the young man from church. His friend, a young man of Mexican ancestry, saw the chart and has promised me that he will find out what he can to get started. He knows almost nothing of his ancestry. I know Spanish but finding the records, especially for recent generations, would be a challenge.

The young man is out there fighting fires on the east side of the Cascades, and doing a good job too. He posts photos of his training to my husband, including a pile of sawed logs, a practice back fire, and a black bear, seen from a distance. Despite the heat, Washington has been remarkably free from wildfires this season. So far.

Our priest has left us to go back to France, to be closer to his parents. He was with us for 9 years. We will have a new priest, of Irish descent I believe, within the next few weeks.

When the next work party rolls around I will have about 7 quilts to start stitching. The mountain of scraps seems to keep growing. I have blocks stored in bags waiting to reach critical mass so more tops can result. It is like gardening; it needs to be worked on every day.

So, back to thoughts of watering. Il faut cultiver notre jardin. So blessings to you all this week.

I have to say, Margaret, that I always enjoy receiving the Summitt Newsletter each week. It's so... well... newsy, and I do so enjoy hearing from you.
Thanks, Pip. Take care of the shoulder. I will go see about lunch.
Margaret, I'm so glad to hear Washington is having a quiet fire season.

It looks like we will taking a detour through Washington on our British Columbia trip to escape the fires in the BC interior.

Going south to Wenatchee, then going up the coast to Vancouver, Canada.
Margaret, I am envious of your scrap pile. I do some piecing and quilting myself but I always have to buy fabric as I barely have any scraps. I love scraps - sorting them out, thinking of what to make from them, sewing them together to make a new quilt from leftover pieces. Also, as Karen Brown from “Just Get It Done Quilts” (YouTube, etc) does, I have started making “after quilts” with leftovers for the backing.
Hi Margaret, Always enjoy your updates. Hope the week goes by quickly for you, having had the pain of looking forward to a root canal! Down here in Eugene I hear we have some smoke coming down from Canada, hope you don't get caught in that.

A wonderful Friday to everyone!

Since weather seems to be a popular topic, I have to say I am so envious of those highs at the 80's and 90's. It was 108F yesterday, will be 110F today and will probably hit 112F before this run of high pressure is done with us. We are breaking records that have held for up to 70 years. The power grid is holding so far but we are asked to conserve energy especially between 3 and 8pm. So far no brown-outs!

On the medical front -  my husband has only two more radiation treatments after today! What a relief that will be. On Monday, I had the second neck injection to relieve the pain in my neck and upper back. All went well and the absence of most of the pain is wonderful.

I have just worked here and there on genealogy the past couple of weeks. I filled in on some missing CC7 ancestors; that isn't fast when taking the time to find all the sources possible to finish off each profile but I did make a bit of progress upping my CC7 count to 7100. I have also been working on some DNA classes. Also, FTDNA has a big sale the month of August so I have upgraded two of my cousins and my husband's tests to the Big Y-700. I don't know if I will learn anything huge from this  but figured it would not hurt to try.

Pip, I am really sorry to hear about your kid's having Covid again. I was so in hopes we would not have another round of this. I hope they are doing well.

Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead; stay cool if possible and I hope some new ancestors magically appear!

EGAD! 108°F. 110°... 112°...I have never been anywhere when the temp has been that high, Ginny. Not even close. If the power did go out, what in the dickens would you do???

I am so glad to hear that your pain is lessened with the injection! I know you have been dealing with this for a while. Good for you!

You might be surprised at the Big Y results. I had very few close hits with FTDNA until I took the Big Y. Now a group of us (not all with the same surname) have been back and forth trying to figure out who was who. We are thinking there's an NPE in the mix.
I don't think I have been in the 110F+ temps either, Pip! Not looking forward to the next few days. We do have a small generator that will run the refrigerator/freezer and the downstairs air conditioning. We bought it after the Snowmageddon of a couple years ago.

Good to hear about your Big-Y results. I hope we get some of those results also. I really think my husband's family has an NPE but I don't know in which direction it happened. It will be interesting to figure it out!
NPE direction... most of the guys who are matching me are not Shepherds (including variant spellings). The are Harwoods and Arwoods. We just cannot figure it out.
Let me know if you encounter a john harwood pierce along the way
Will do, K!
John Harwood Pierce, his bio doesn't d him justice. Wikipedia outlines a career NPE perpetrator. May explain my Pierce brick wall.

I just received a confirmation call for a medical appointmenton Monday.  Much to my surprise I realized today is Friday and I had lost track of a full day sometime since Monday.  My vitamin pill container may reveal where I went dreaming.

We have been having a coolish summer, very few days in the 90s.  The Almanac forecasts an unusually cold winter for this area.  That's all I need after just locking in a prebuy
propane supply at a consistent price all season.  Since I am
not going to Florida any more I will have to pay the going price after May and any required after my winter supply has been used up.  This is apt to kick in sometime in January because I will be using heat for 24 hours a day from the end of November.  My average usage for prebuy is based on the fact that my thermostat stays on 40 degrees from about Dec. to April.  I also have to drain all of the water and reconnect it when I come home in case the heat goes off in the winter and the pipes would split.  I have a feeling I need to be banking a heat bill account sum for late winter and spring.  The good old wood furnace and wood stove were certainly cheaper but no one is here to cut, split and drag in anymore, and takeout the ashes as needed.

Dang, Beulah, I wish I could get an appointment! laugh

I promise you, Beulah, that if I could I'd be up there to cut, split and drag in wood, and takeout the ashes as needed, even with my bum shoulder.

I appreciate the thought Pip but even Herb gave up after, as my comical neighbor remarked, "The Chimney came down with the flu" after an ice storm.  Our grandchildren react with horror that we have killed the planet with our past history of keeping warm methods.  I foresee them freezing to death when their total reliance on electricity in the future does not furnish heat for the homes when the electricity wires are down and the poles are broken under the ice storms and will not be fixed for two or three weeks.
Agreed, Beulah. We have a generator, but it can only last for so long, and it is NOT whole house, either. What we do have is a fireplace and a stack of wood.
I'm always very pleased that our old natural gas fire works when the power is out.

I think that newer ones rely on a different type of spark system.
The old gravity system aren't as efficient but makes up for it in reliability. I don't know if the newer systems are any more cost efficient if you count the electricity and $20 furnace filters.

Checking in and saying hi from Bloomington, Illinois, USA!

My wife got to go on vacation to the Carle Hospital for 3 days with pneumonia!  The cat scan revealed something else, and there was a cancer scare, but the medical staff walked back their thinking and now feel the mass that showed up in the cat scan is only fluid built up from gurd attacks!

They have her sedated, so she is so out of it!

So, I am camped out at the hospital for a couple of days tending to my wife.  We have a great view of the heliport, as the helicopters land 30 feet away right out our window! KEWL!

This is giving me time to give out comments, and up votes to everyone!  I am helping a nurse get her family profiled on WikiTree!wink

I am so glad that the medical issue scare wasn't as bad as initially thought, David. Please keep us posted on all that is going on.
So sorry to hear about your wife's illness. It's such a scary situation, for sure. I'm praying for a speedy recovery with no lingering complications.

Sending Healing & Loving energy for her speedy recovery. The only alternative I know to combating Gerd is don't eat whatever brings on the attacks. In my case it's an overload of chocolate sad.

Update: The Doc says she has to stay Sunday and maybe Monday!

My grandfather, Fred Draper, went into the hospital with pneumonia and after getting settled in, the young nurse came in, check him out and said to my grandfather, " I want you to take a deep breath for me". He replied, "Well, that is pretty hard to do, but I'll try....he tried and he died the next second!

So, when the nurse came in to check on my wife, she said the same thing, " I said to the nurse, "Whoa, wait a second, let me tell you about my grand dad!"

That freaked me out!

David,

If you would like a little Alternative Healing information to help your wife, I have a way for you to help her get relief & maybe get to leave the hospital a little sooner. It will give you something productive to do while helping your wife.

Search for "how to run the Stomach Meridian line". The Big Tree School of Natural Healing is a good place to see a clean stomach meridian line once you have googled it. This will give you visuals of what & where you need to be working to help her, but 1 key point is about 3" under the knee cap on the outside of the shin bone to the left (ST 36). The legs, hips, stomach, trunk & chest can be gently massaged with your thumbs feathering up the line to the heart. She should also be able to tell you what feels good & what does not; work together to unblock her stomach meridian. The line goes all the way down to the second toe, make sure you get that in there as well. I would say tapping, but again, ask your wife for her comfort level.

At the face, the stomach meridian starts under the eyes in the middle right on the eye socket bone which runs down to the jawbone where it meets another part of the start of the line. The lines on the head should be tapped lightly down to the chest where you can start the effleurage.

Lines can actually be run up or down when you are working with energy lines, but again, she should be able to tell you what feels better.

I send this with all my Light, Love & Healing Energy to help her on a speedy recovery. Hang in there, you've got this.

heartheartheart

Any new news today, David? We prayed for you and your wife at St. Pat's this morning.
Cindy is doing much better and we may get to come home on Tuesday!

Pat, my mom was sort of into what you are talking about!  But I need to tell you something about todays hospitals, especially this one:  If you get admitted with Pneumonia, its mandatory 72 hours minimum stay! For us it is minimum 4 day stay! Period! Scream all you want, not going to let you go home!
I am so very glad to hear this, David! I'm guessing YOU will be the hone care until she fully recovers. Don't wear yourself out.

My mother-in-law had several bouts with pneumonia, and yes, you are right. 72 hours minimum.
Glad to hear things are resolving. Hang on to that positive outlook, it can only help! and best wishes to you and Cindy.

Happy Friday from the southwest corner of the northeast state that both Chris F and I call home. A few weeks back our section of the state got quite a bit of rain and many rivers and streams overflowed their banks causing major road flooding and washouts. The road where I live got washed out at both ends causing our neighbors to hope that no emergencies happened as rescue vehicles would not be able to get to them. The house where I live is on an intersection and we were not affected by the washouts. The road crews had the majority of the washouts passible in just a day or two. Here's an example of the flooding from one of towns nearby.

Thankfully, all is well today. But there was a time when it seemed like the mantra would be "Rain, Washout, Rinse, and Repeat".

Oh, Candyce, I'm so glad that you were not terribly affected by the flooding, even if you were rather stranded for a while there. That's a scary photo!

Hi from southern Ontario,

Chez moi/at home: what's happening here? Weather this morning is cool and cloudy with intermittent rain. Tonight will be cool enough at 14C to put the comforter back on the bed. Theoretically sunny and warmer this afternoon, sunny and warmer tomorrow.

WikiTree and family history: I have been working on my short biography suggestions, primarily adding information to the large number of profiles I adopted back in May, and adding sources because most of them only have Ancestry listed as the source.

I have also been sourcing many profiles that are part of a huge family that are Alton related, they married into many Alton families, are only sourced with a Gedcom which is not always correct.

What else: I’m late today, because I’ve been looking at the fire situation in British Columbia. We are booked for 2 nights in Kelowna, and they have just declared a State of Emergency. Kelowna is on the east shore of Lake Okanagan, there has been a major fire happening on the west side of the lake in West Kelowna. Our revised travel plan is to stay 2 extra nights with our friends in Nelson and go from Nelson to Kamloops and keep our fingers crossed that the fire situation improves.

We are getting together with all of my siblings and their spouses tomorrow, for a sibling supper at my little brother’s house. It will be the first time we have all been together since before Covid. There will be 14 of us, 7 sibs and 7 significant others, plus at least 1 dog and maybe some nieces and nephews. Most of us have managed to get together more recently but 1 brother who lives 3 hours east has not been able to.

As some of you know my youngest daughter was in 2 near fatal motor vehicle incidents (I refuse to call them accidents). As a result, she was prescribed narcotics for pain, doses that were too high, after many years, she decided with the help of a new doctor that it had to stop. Yesterday was the 4 year anniversary of no drugs. I am so proud of her.

PS-I have so much to do with our trip coming up on Wednesday there won’t be a Virtual Vacation today. If you would like to see older vacation photos they are here. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Virtual_Vacation

First time I have ever seen you miss bolding the paragraph headings, M. laugh

I, too, have been keeping an eye on those Canadian fires. I hope they don't get in the way of or affect your trip in any way. You've been planning this for so long now.

How wonderful all of the siblings are gong to be together. I hope your little brother has enough room for 14 people!

Oh! I did forget, I'll just fix that!

Our thought about Kelowna, is that they don't need tourists taking up space and using supplies that could be needed for evacuees. Already one road is closed and that is the road we would have driven in on, so we might not have been able to get there at all.

Yes my little brother Matthew, 15 years younger than me, has plenty of space, we have had more than 20 people there before!
I just saw a video pop up on my phone of the fire you mention. It looks like it has crossed the lake. This is not good. Y'all be safe!
We have cancelled our reservation in Kelowna, and will stay 2 extra nights with our friends in Nelson and reassess as needed.
Good call to avoid the fire zone. Enjoy your reunion - take photos!
Warm congratulations to your daughter to have gotten rid of those drugs since 4 years! That is wonderful!
Pip, we have spent a lot of time discussing what we should do, our Kelowna reservation is cancelled and we will probably cancel the reservation in Kamloops.

It is almost 2 weeks from now but a backup plan is a good idea.

And take a detour south through Washington State, cross the border at Grand Forks, then drive to Wenatchee, then over to the coast and back north to Vancouver, British Columbia.

It's about 11 hours in total, compared to 13.5 through the BC Interior. now all I have to do is find a couple of places to stay.
A travel ban now covers most of the interior so we have no choice but to detour through Washington State.
Oh, M. I do hope that you will be able to complete the trip without any more detours.
Pip, I think it will work out, we now have hotels booked in 3 places in Washington State.

We will be driving south from Nelson to Grand Forks then south and west through Washington State to the Pacific Coast, staying in Ormak,, Wenatchee and Marysville, north to Vancouver, Canada  then returning back to the original plan.

We always had plans to visit that area, so its just an unplanned visit.

I think it is Margaret from Everett, Mukilteo, Washington who said recently that the state has had a very quiet fire season this year.

I don`t know if I said earlier, we are staying with Robbie`s 4th cousin in Campbell River on Vancouver Island, they share Alton, Ontario 4 x GGPs.

I met her several years ago when she and husband visited southern Ontario. Robbie was away at a conference in San Diego so he hasn`t met her yet.

I`m sure there will be a lot of family history conversation. if I could write off the trip cost as some sort of family history business cost.

Thanks for asking

M
M, you are just like my daughter. She plans her trips way in advance, and if something comes up that makes her plans change, she is ON IT! Nothing gets in her way. You be safe!
Hope your family reunion was wonderful and your detours are happy ones!

I am so happy to have found some photos of my dad's brickwork!

I'm proud of how precise the courses are and how evenly spaced the bricks are in the arches. This job was in Worcester, Worcester co, Massachusetts, USA in the early 1980s. Details such as these are seldom incorporated by architects these days- most people aren't willing to pay for the skill and hours. I'm so pleased to have found these photos a few days ago while peeling photos from one of those sticky albums from the 70s and 80s which age the pictures faster than anything else I've seen- or should I blame the processing of the day?

It's been another day of fierce rain spawning tornadoes in Providence, Rhode Island, Bristol and Norfolk counties of Massachusetts. Lucky for me, I happened to come to Fitchburg yesterday; only some light rain here this morning.

Happy weekend!
Thanks for hosting us, Pip!

No, it was definitely the sticky goo in the albums that does that to photos. A. That's some really neat work there. You dad was an artist!
Yes, it is the goop in what were they called' magnetic pages' i took several apart last year, you have to be really careful taking the photos off the pages.
M, I think I have the hang of it; the technique is similar to removing delicate paper projects from those adhesive mats required in using my crafting machine. Thanks for commiseration! I think I have about 10 more of those albums to go, then some of the flip albums in which the adhesive hinges have let go from the backing and stuck to other sleeves in a disheveled wad. So far, the best albums are the oldest- with the heavy black paper pages and the photos tucked into adhesive corners. So much for "progress"!
I took all of my old pictures out of those sticky goop albums during Covid many of them came out okay, some didn't.

Some were bent so I stashed them in between pages of big heavy books after several months most of them had flattened out okay, now they are in big envelopes, stored horizontally while I try to decide what to do next .

Looks like another winter project.
Wow M, that's what I call making the best of the Covid situation - job well done!
They definitely know bricks in Mass.! Nice pics!

Well it has been a very hot and smoky week in Western Oregon, but things have been improving the last few days. Did my best to keep the garden well watered, and me too!

Reading: finishing up a book I picked up at the library sale called The Lost Family: How DNA Testing is Upending Who We Are, easy to read, there's a lot about philosophical and ethical and legal considerations, but I was telling a friend that I was most interested that people are so impressionable that researchers found that if you tell someone, for the example used in the book, that their genes say they have low or high endurance, THEY WILL START EXHIBITING ENDURANCE IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT THEY ARE TOLD, regardless of what their genes do or do not say. So keep up those affirmations people! Lol - Up next is The Wager by David Grann,: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder, recommended by a Wikitree friend!  I have a huge TBR pile, hope to report steady progress on it, starting this week, because I am scheduling reading time into my calendar. Let's go!!

Genealogy: added 3 profiles, ready to do some more. Three shifts at my local gen library, and 2 greeter shifts.

Tonight my kid and friend/housemates (in their 20s) are hosting their first house warming party, That should be entertaining. I have been informed the civilized portion will be from 6 to 7:30, apparently after that it could devolve.... Kinda looking forward to it!

by Momo Holmquist G2G6 Mach 4 (48.8k points)

TBR pile. Oh, how I know just what this is! While I am looking for books to get rid of, I find books I have not yet read. NOOOO!!!!

Are you going to "devolve" with them at the house warming, Momo? laugh

Well that would be telling, wouldn't it? devil wink

Hi Momo,

it strikes me that a person's own life and behavior may depend as much on what they think they KNOW about genes (like many other things from ancestors to religion to astrology), and more importantly what they and the people around them BELIEVE about them, as on any actual "objectively provable" cause-and-effect. We end up living in the world our minds create. If we suddenly think we are strong, clever, blessed or have great endurance, that can definitely change our behavior!
I hope you enjoy the book Momo, although I have not heard of it. My local library uses Libby now and I always have a list of ebooks I want to read, plus 2-3 borrowed at any given time. In addition, I have a slightly overflowing shelf in my bookcase of physical books that I want to read - most borrowed from friends. I just never seem to be able to get through them all!
Gary, I think so!

Liza, I have resorted to calendaring reading time, especially for those books I may want to go more in depth with. I may do it at the dining room table or in a cafe, but for those 2 or 3 hours, that's all I'm doing, phone on airplane mode, no scrolling! Fluid refreshment I'll allow though. Gotta  have my coffee tea or writer-style beverage

Wish me luck!

Well.... did you? (I am laughing here.)

cheeky I absolutely did, but things stayed pretty civilized, lol, even the karaoke part. But it wasn't until AFTER my greeter shift, lol, no drinking and greeting here Boss!

I am just glad you had a great time, Momo! Good for you! laugh

Hope that everyone can get those doctor visits scheduled. It sure can be difficult.

You may have heard but we lost our 14 year old Golden Retriever in July. There is no 'replacing' her, but we are looking for another puppy. Folks from the Golden Retriever rescue are coming to visit tomorrow.

Molly

HOT.. It was HOT when we got home from our trip to Connecticut, which included visiting with family, researching genealogy with cousins, visiting with WikiCousins and playing tourist. I did get some pictures and added ones to Henry Whitfield (not related) and great great grandfather Martin Scranton and the four of his sons who have monuments for their Civil War service.

by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (602k points)
Very cool photos on those profiles, Kay!

I really do hope the GR Rescue has a puppy for you. Goldens are such wonderful and loving dogs.
That is a wonderful photo of your Golden Retriever, Kay......Kathy and I understand your loss, as we are, also, experiencing an empty feeling over the recent loss of our faithful companion.
What a beautiful dog! Best of luck with puppy adoption.
I'm so sorry to read about the loss of your beautiful Golden. It is something I dread for the future as my dog is 9 1/2 at the moment.
