The Mayflower Project:

Are you interested in improving the profiles of Mayflower passengers and their early descendants?

The Mayflower Project currently covers the passengers of the Mayflower, their spouses, and their descendants for two generations or born before 1700, whichever is more inclusive. Please note that all Mayflower passengers and most of their family members already have profiles on WikiTree and should not be duplicated. If you cannot find yours, please ask.

Anyone who has signed the Honor Code, has the Pre-1700 badge, follows the Mayflower tag and is willing to assist the project in its goals is invited to join.

To Join - Please carefully follow these Directions:

  1. Read the Project page.
  2. Ask yourself: Do I actively want to participate in the project and contribute to the  Mayflower Project goals? See Project FAQ.
  3. Add and maintain Mayflower in your Followed Tags on your profile. This is a requirement of membership.
  4. Post an answer (not a comment) below, introducing yourself, and sharing why you are interested in the Mayflower Project, who your ancestor is (if you know that you have one), and what you plan to contribute to the project.  Comments that don't specify a request to join the project will be removed to avoid confusion.
  5. You'll need to remain active on WikiTree and respond to check-in requests. If you are barely active, you may be removed from the project.

Upon joining the Project, you will be asked to co-manage a project profile. You may choose a profile that needs a co-manager, but the profile will need approval by the leaders. You'll be expected to research and write a basic biography for that profile, with help from the leaders if needed. You'll then be expected to co-manage the project profile using the following guidelines:

  • leading collaboration
  • improving profiles
  • watching over profiles to see that incorrect information doesn't creep in, reverting when needed
  • responding to trusted list requests
  • approving/completing merges

If you simply want to acknowledge that you are the descendant of a Mayflower passenger and honor that passenger, Mayflower has a Sticker you can add to your profile. {{Mayflower Descendants}}

NOTE: Please click the Answer this post button to join. To keep things organized, comments at the top will be hidden or moved once read. Please keep this thread to its intended subject: joining the Project. For other subjects, please start a new post, using the Mayflower tag.

I am actively researching my connection to the Mayflower through Sara [Cushman] Collins b. 1785 CT whose parents were Nathaniel Cushman 1760-1832 and Sarah Bennett 1762-1786.  Please advise me of my eligibility and if so provide me with a detailed guide on how to proceed.  Thanks.

I have been an active member of DAR for many years. My great aunt was a professional genealogist and supplied my family with valuable information for our family. The creation of better genealogy sites, records and documentation helped me learn we are supposedly descendants of both the Mayflower passengers and Jamestown settlers. I would like to participate in this project while also documenting lineage for my possible ancestors of the Mayflower: Hopkins, Rogers, and Allerton.

Hi Bobby,

Thank you for your dedication to improving genealogy for everyone!

I am a descendant  of union of Priscilla Mullins and John Alden and the Admin for the Ewing Y DNA Project.

What would the responsibilities be?
by DG Ewing G2G Crew (870 points)
Thanks, DG. The responsibilities are as outlined in the opening "query" above. I've sent you a private message with further information.
I could assume that a "project profile" is limited to only the passengers of the Mayflower or I could assume that it also includes any ancestor or descendant...Sorry it the engineer in me

Hi DG,

The private message I sent to you gives you a link to the current "orphan" profiles in the project that need attention and management. These Project Managed Profiles are mainly unloved and abandoned descendants in need of care and attention.

I'd be honored to join the Mayflower project team and contribute where needed. I still work full-time, but I love working on genealogy. I have been working on my genealogy since the early 2000s but took a break in 2012 until recently. I proved my lineage to Mayflower passengers Richard Warren and John Howland back in 2010. I have not yet proven my lineage to 9 other passengers. I am currently working on adding all of my ancestors one by one to the Wikitree ensuring I am not creating any duplicates of course. All my entries are fully sourced with primary sources and I create a bio with inline sourcing and a bibliography at the end. I have extensive Wikipedia editing experience that might be helpful in this community.

Hello!  I am D. Robert Smith (aka Acker).

According to not only maternal family stories, but the work I’ve done, show John Alden & Pricilla Mullins, as well as Thomas and Joseph Rogers.

I noticed in a recent email, that the line to John Alden is different, and suggests there’s more that one connection via the Pabodies.

Here’s the line I’d like to contribute some time to.

Thanks and hope to be chatting with the group!

Nite: some will show an (Immigrant2) or that they emigrated from Canada  these were families that became United Empire Loyalists during the Revolutionary War

I am interested in assisting on the Mayflower Project.  I have traced my ancestry to two passengers:  Thomas Rogers and Henry Samson.  However, I have been unable to prove my connections to the extent necessary to join the Society of Mayflower Descendants.  I'm hoping that my work on WikiTree might help me prove those connections.

I would be interested in helping out. I am a member of the GSMD (through the Canadian member society). I am particularly interested in the migration of Mayflower descendants into Upper Canada in the late 18th century and early 19th century but happy to help in any way.

My name is Michael Mercadante.  I'm a professional genealogist currently working toward board certification.  I spend a lot of free time working through my own ancestry.  I have traced one line back to Mayflower passenger Samuel Fuller (the younger), and am currently working on potential connections to a few other passengers.  I am interested in participating in the Mayflower Project in any capacity I can.  Thank you for your consideration!

Thank you, Michael. I've sent a private message to you with further information.

I'd be delighted to assist with the Mayflower Project if volunteers are still needed. I've been actively working on my grandmother's legacy of information for about 40 years. She had clues to Mayflower passengers, and I am still following her clues for some. I've confirmed Samson and am working on Chilton, Alden, and Cooke. Please let me know if you do still need assistance.

Hi, Anne B. & Bobbie!

Here to help. I'm a descendant of 5 passengers: George Soule, Stephen Hopkins, Thomas Rogers, Edward Doty and Francis Cooke (so far) through my maternal grandmother Emily Rebecca (Paine) Rebmann (1877-1972). I have an article in review at The Mayflower Descendant correcting a Billington line in print in the M5G book; luckily, Chris Child says, no one has ever applied for membership through that now incorrect line. Whew!  Let me know.

Robert M. Gerrity

We'd love to have you join us, Robert. You've been awarded the Mayflower Project badge, and I'll forward further information soon. Welcome to the Mayflower Project!

Hopefully, your updates to the Billington lineage won't affect too many descendants here on WT either.

Hi Frederick,

You're already a Mayflower Project member. You're always welcome to make sourced additions to profiles with a Mayflower lineage.
Thank you Bobbie.

Hello,

I am interested in this project because I have traced several lines to Mayflower passengers.  My family seemed to land mostly in Virginia & North Carolina for several generations as well as other East Coast locations.  I would appreciate confirmation of the progeny that ensued from these first Americans.  Thank you so much.

Karen Rose Collins
by Karen Rose G2G1 (1.5k points)
Thanks for your interest in the Mayflower Project, Karen. I've sent you a private message with more information. If you need assistance with particular people/profiles in your lineage that you think lead to Mayflower passengers, it's always a good idea to post a G2G question asking specifically about sources to help make those connections. Add tags for Mayflower and the locations and surnames to help gather the right people to help.

I've been working on and off on my line to Constance Hopkins through the Paine Family line. The proven lineage stops at Barnabas (b.30Sep1767) and a sibling, Joseph (b. 1796.) It's hard to get sources for my ancestor, Scammons as the family moved from the Cape in the post-revolutionary War period, west then north into Vermont. He ended up in St. Laurence county, NY and served in the War of 1812. He has no registered birth or Marriage. I have much to post on the branches from a copy of the family bible and would like to bird dog undeveloped collateral lines. I hope to close this one gap; I have clear primary sources from Scammons' son, Charles until the present.
by James Rusch G2G Crew (380 points)
Hi James,

I've sent you a private message about joining the Mayflower project, but separately I think it would be wise to make a separate post on G2G (tag it with Mayflower, Scammons, etc.) and ask for specific assistance in finding the records or proof that you need to make a good connection for a Mayflower lineage. Birth & marriage records might not exist, but often other records can be substituted such as deeds or probate records to prove the connections between generations.

Best of luck in your research!
One issue is how to enter all the data onto Wikitree. I can read how and then post it, and someone can clean and advise or do I get advice before I post?

The second issue is that my major sourcefor several generations is a Family Bible that was copied into Massena, NY's town historical record. Is that accepted as a primary source?

A third is that my previous weak link now has a brother who lists they are Mayflower on FamilySearch, but cites only the mayflower submission number and I can't see their sources (which may be the famlily bible that I had posted years ago) (ref: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:QV7S-9T7 )

Thanks, Jim
Hi again, Jim.

I've sent you a private message via WT's messaging system. Look for a message entitled, "Questions about Mayflower lineage."

I hope it helps.

Hello, My name is Donna Clark-Mauel.  I am interested in assisting on the Mayflower Project.  I have been researching my families genealogy since I became my family's historian with the passing of my mother in July 2022.  My husband Michael and I both have William & Mary Brewster, Mayflower passengers, as our great-grandparents.  Richard & Elizabeth (Walker) Warren, Governor William & Alice (Carpenter) Bradford, William & Alice (Atwood) Mullins, and John & Priscilla (Mullins) Aldens are also my great-grandparents.  I would like to be able learn more about the lives and history of my ancestors to share at family reunions and with my family.  Please let me know how I can help with the project.

Hi Bobbie. Not sure if I've answered this already. Descend from Cooke, Doty, Hopkins, Rogers and Soule. Have access to the 5th GenMD database at AA. Know where some of the Silvers are at archive.org. "Have standards. Will Correct." Is a goal of the WTMP to formally extend Silvers to 6th & 7th with an Icon marker? I currently note in text, if I notice, it is an M Descent but that's not good visual marketing. Like: "... . is a 7th Generation Mayflower Descendant." A fifth of my Ralph Paine descendants, from son Thomas' wife, are George Soule descendants, for instance.
by Robert Gerrity G2G5 (5.7k points)

Hi Robert,

Yes, you answered a while ago here and received your badge.
The project is still maintaining its Pre-1700 limit and with more than 3200 profiles currently under management and many still in need of even a simple, sourced biography, I don't think we'll be expanding very soon.

Our current standard on later (deceased, post-1700 births) descendants is to add a simple statement above the Biography header such as:

'''Japhet Turner''' was a descendant of '''''Mayflower''''' passenger [[Doty-42|Edward Doty Sr.]]

That provides a clickable link to the passenger's profile.

Hi my name is terrie privette, inwould love to learn more about my ancestors. I am a bit stuck. I have dna confirmation from me to  matthew fuller but did a triangulated dna for samuel fuller jr and it's showing no match even though Matthew is samuel jrs son. Would love to find how how to proceed since I am only 2 generations from samuel fuller and jane. Thanks
by Terrie Whittaker G2G Crew (450 points)

Hi Terrie,

This is a complex DNA-related question, and this is a post about joining the Project. I think it would be best answered by posting as its own, separate query on G2G. I think a post with information about the profiles IDs you're concerned with, along with tags for DNA and Mayflower would gather some help on where the problem might be.

Let me know if you need help in creating a new post.
