Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge. You can j
oin the Notables Project by requesting membership in the  Notables Google Group.  Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to review the Requirements of Working on Profiles of Notables on WikiTree Page that has updated information. (For ideas on ways to connect unconnected people and branches, see also the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Notables should fulfill the criteria to have at least one Wikipedia page in any language to qualify as a Notable. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Who's Who or a NATIONAL Biography is also acceptable as well.

The Notables team will decide if a Living Notable's Profile can be made Public or not. That means the Notable must have at least 3  Wikipedia Pages in different languages. At least two Wikipedia pages in different languages must also include the name of at least one close or nuclear family member (Specifically parents, siblings, spouse or child). If the page should also happen to list grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins in the "other relatives" list, those would also be helpful.

I have noted at least two edits to the above post, yet neither edit shows a reason why.  When editing a post - especially someone else's post, or a question - it is a courtesy to every reader that whatever was edited be noted.  In fact, it is in the help page for moderating g2g.

The edits were not moderation. The alterations were to conform the post to the updated policy by the Notables Project in a post by the Notables Project. For clarity, those requirements are not new to Wikitree. The requirements change the practices of the Notables Project to conform to the Wikitree requirements. Updated Notables Requirements

Would love to join the notables project. I'm really interested in the Afanasenko (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afanasenko) notables as well as other misc notables like Daniel Naroditsky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Naroditsky) and his Jewish and Ukrainian (Soviet) side of the family that might be linked to mine.
by Eitan Shikher G2G4 (4.3k points)
Welcome to the Notables Team, Eitan!
Thank you Scott!

I got started on Daniel Naroditsky ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Naroditsky-4 ), it's still a work in progress but I keep going back to the Project: Notables pages to make sure I'm doing everything correctly.
If you would, please, make the Notables Project account co-manager of this profile, so that we may assist with reviewing details and updating privacy based on the current privacy rules for living Notables. Thanks!
Sounds good!
All done. You should be able to access it now!
Thanks, Eitan! I see Notables is on the Trusted List, but not yet as co-Manager. Can you go to the Trusted List and select "Add as Manager" next to Notables? This profile is eligible for Yellow privacy, but it cannot be completed until the project is set as co-Manager. Thanks!
All done Scott! Let me know if it's working now

I am interested in joining the Notable Project. I am specifically interested in Sport > Baseball and possibly Military,  but I feel another project covers this as well. I am willing to volunteer my time to the cause.

The last Italian Crown Prince Vittorio Emanuele died. Here is an article in Italian

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Thanks, Jelena. His profile has now been opened for editing.
English Wikipedia page - just so we can read it...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vittorio_Emanuele,_Prince_of_Naples
Hmmm, I know that most communication here is in English, but WikiTree is meant to be an international website. In my opinion, an article that isn't in English, but gives the relevant information, is as good as an English article. In fact there are enough internet programs that are able to translate a text into English.
I used to be surprised how much more information you sometimes get in a notable's home language Wikipedia page than the English version.  It's always worth checking the pages in other languages, particularly for non-English speaking personalities, although even my British great granduncle who competed in the first Olympics got a couple of helpful extra tidbits in his French page, while his English page is just a stub.

Actor Carl Weathers of Star Wars and Rocky fame passed away on 1 February. There are 2 profiles out there.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Weathers-1543

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Weathers-1472

A merge has been proposed.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Merge is complete. Profile is Open for editing. Please be aware that he is NOT connected at this time, so in honor of his legacy as a Notable, we should make some effort to add family members and expand his tree. Please add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles that meet their project's criteria for it. Thanks!
I was thinking about him when he did. It would be a great combat duel between him and ROCKY. Just a thought.

New Norwegian Notable: Enevold Steenblock Høyum. He was a delegate at the Norwegian Constituent Assembly in 1814. As he has his own Wikipedia article in English (as well as in Norwegian), I've already given him a Notables sticker.

The Black Heritage project may be interested in a profile for recently deceased Hinton Battle (1956-2024) who was an African-American actor, singer, dancer, dance instructor and winner of 3 Tony Awards. It doesn't look like he has an open profile on wikitree ... but I am wondering if the Notables Project can check if the following is a possible hidden profile for him ? Thanks.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Battle-768

by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (298k points)
I'm guessing that you are aware of the date of birth discrepancy?

The Black listed profile you mention says Born in 1940s

Your detail says he was born in 1956.

Losing Hinton Battle is a sad day for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom!

Edit to add: NYT obit Hinton Battle, Three-Time Tony Winner in Musicals, Dies at 67 (unlocked)

I would like to join the Notables project, I am working on a collection of Indie Musicians as a side project.
by Hardy Haase G2G1 (2.0k points)
Welcome to the Notables Team, Hardy!
I'm interested in learning what deceased musicians you're working on, Hardy. I've created many profiles for the creatives under the Notables project myself. Maybe we can collaborate?
Hi Judi!  The project is (so far) about living musicians in the indie/alternative genre, so far I've focused on artists that I personally listen to regularly that may have flown under the radar of the Notables tag.  I am always open to adding more artists, I just started this project in the last two weeks.

I'm looking at the branch of Chris Evert. Her mother is still put private. I found a news that she died, so the profile should be opened. https://news.yahoo.com/colette-evert-mother-chris-evert-211439286.html

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
And Chris Evert got connected through her paternal line. She has Luxembourgish/Belgian ancestry (Luxembourg was at the time when her greatgrandfather was born, part of German Confederation.)

Edit: After I saw that her greatgranddad was also unconnected I looked further and was eventually really able to connect her.
Her profile is not managed by Notables, so I have requested that he open it based on the link above. I put this information through in a TL request, so if he responds to that but doesn't open the profile, I'll take care of that once I have access. Thanks for the update.

William III of the Netherlands – Wikipedia

was King and Grand Duke of Luxembourg

Quoting and translating from the German Wikipedia-entry about Luxembourg: "Historisch gehörte Luxemburg zum Heiligen Römischen Reich und zum Deutschen Bund" - "Historically Luxembourg belonged to the Holy Roman Empire and to the German Confederation." This is also supported by a map of the German Confederation.
There were also other members of the German Confederation that also belonged to other territories, e.g. the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, that were part of Denmark during the German Confederation.

Science Fiction writer Robert Silverberg is now connected to the global tree. I had no idea that he had written over 80 novels in his lifetime, and added to that all the short stories and other things - quite a prolific writer.

Update from the Notables Project Leaders -

There are now over 70,000 profiles of Notables on WikiTree. The Notables Project has nearly 9000 profiles on its watchlist after removing itself from many deceased notables.  Note that whether a profile is managed by the Notables Project with a Notables Project Box or monitored by the Notables Project with a Notables Project Sticker, does not imply that an individual has any higher standing than another.

We ask everyone to review and understand the revised updated requirements regarding notables on WikiTree which can be found here. Updated Requirements for Notables on WikiTree

In the requirements, you will see how the Notables Project will determine which profiles the Notables Project will manage moving forward. Also new is a form that will assist the Notables Project to determine if an individual’s profile will be project managed.  Form to Request Notables Project Management

Other projects similarly use a form. Eliminated is the prior process that allowed anyone any member to merely add a profile to the Notables Project’s watchlist. Because of the prior practice, there are about 3400 Notables Project managed profiles that are unlisted, unorganized, and for the most part, unknown to the Notables Project. Something needed to stop the spiraling increase of profiles being added to the Notables Project watchlist.

We encourage all existing Notables Project members and anyone interested in becoming a member of the Notables Project to join the new communication group for Notables Project members. Information can be found on the Notables Project page - Contact the Notables Project

We understand that change can sometimes be difficult and some tweaks may need to occur. However, in the long run, it will be far more efficient to review and categorize project-managed profiles before they become project managed, rather than to try to identify and adjust unlisted profiles down the line.

Please be patient as we implement the new requirements.

Yes the profile is ready for review. It says that she is an American author of the Madeline series.
For a description, see:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Biographies

Search for the word "Above"

or, scan down to "Optional: Additional subsections"
Scott, why should any statement be put in bold in a profile?  Is that in some Help page that a statement should be put in Bold?

Linda, if you are aware of a site-wide style rule that restricts the use of bold, please advise.  See: Difference between site-wide rules and project rules.

I did not see the word 'bold' in your requirements page.

The bold language is in the statement of the notability provision. Statement of Notability. Your comment supports if you want something to stand out, use bold.  I will bold the word "bold."  Update:  Bold is now recommended and not mandatory,

Personally, I've been in the habit of bolding the name only or the name the notable is known as.... e.g. Frances Ethel Gumm, also known as Judy Garland... to provide emphasis.

Why is it that Notables project is now saying :

Standards for Minors

The creation of profiles for minors on WikiTree is prohibited under any circumstances, regardless of that minor's fame or notability. A minor is defined as anyone under the age of eighteen, regardless of the age of majority in that minor's home country. In addition, it is against WikiTree's privacy policy to identify a minor person by name in the profile of another individual such as a parent or sibling.

-

When WikiTree policy is still saying :

Children Under Age 13

Children under 13 may not use WikiTree.

A profile for a child under 13 may be created, but only by a parent and legal guardian. Other family members on the Trusted List may edit the profile as long as it is supervised and managed by the parent. This also applies to non-living children who would be under age 13 today had they lived. For more on this, see Help:Recently Deceased Strangers.

Personal information about a child should not be included in a profile of someone else, e.g. children should not be mentioned in a biography or comment.

Children Between the Ages of 13 and 16

Children between the ages of 13 and 16 may use WikiTree with parental consent.

Similarly, profiles of children 13 to 16 may be created with parental consent.

-

There is nothing there that says we must not create profiles for those under the age of 18 years.

If the under 18 "rule" is just for Notables Project, then the page should say so.

I believe what it's saying is, "If you are not the parent or guardian of a living minor, don't make the profile."

Thank you for pointing out the misleading language.  The language is clarified including by adding references to the WikiTree Help Rules.

Interested in joining the project as have always been fascinated in how such people connect and would now like to give something back by improving profiles.
PS Are people who received a grant of arms in Scotland by the Lord Lyon King At Arms (eg https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McAuslane-32) considered to be notables?
by Living McAusland G2G6 (6.9k points)

First, Welcome to the Notables Team, Lucy!

Second, as it relates to specific profiles, we use the Wikipedia standards for Notability. So if they have a Wikipedia page in their sole name in any language, then they are automatically a Notable. If they appear in a National Biography (needs to be at the National and "official" level), then they are automatically a Notable. If they do not meet these criteria, then we would have to review them closely to determine if they meet or exceed the Wikipedia criteria. But the easiest way is if they have a Wikipedia page.

After the renowned Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama died last fall, I created a profile for him (Moriyama-10) plus profiles for 5 degree 1 and 3 degree 2 connections; but he remains unconnected to the Big Tree. Anyone out there with expertise in Japanese records?

Seeking help in connecting to the tree General Emmet Dalton 1898-1978, his younger brother Charles Francis Dalton 1903-1974 and Audrey Dalton, hollywood actress, 1934 - ? Audrey is a daughter of Emmet Dalton. James 'Emmet' Dalton was born in Fall River, Massachusetts but his family moved to Ireland in 1900, homeland of his mother. I have just added the notable sticker to the profiles of Emmet, Charles and Audrey. Emmet Dalton was alongside Commander Michael Collins when they were ambushed and Collins died.

My grandfather was with Emmet in WW1 in the Royal Dublin Fusliers and also in the Irish War of Independence.

Yes. I managed to connect Emmet, Charles and Audrey through another brother Dermot. I added Dermot's wife Janet Denning > her mother, Marguerite Monore Denning>her father James Monroe>his mother, Isabella Grono Monroelaugh

They still only have 66 connections, but I will work on that nextcool
