The United States Project and its sub-projects cover the geographic region that we know today as the United States of America. See the United States Project page for information on our scope of activity, our sub-projects, and some related projects.

If you would like to help improve profiles in one or more of the United States sub-projects, please:

  1. Introduce yourself by answering this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in the United States and how you intend to contribute and we will award you the United States Project badge.
  2. Add united_states to your followed tags, as well as tags for any specific states or special topics that you are focusing on.

Please be sure to check out our project page for links to the various sub-projects that you might want to join.

The following specialized US-related projects have their own membership badge, separate from this one. You don't need to join the United States Project to participate in these projects.  You should contact those projects to join them.  Many of us work on profiles that encompass many areas/interests and may want to be in more than one project.

I have family history from New England and the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest, and have interest in all of the migrating states in between. My current research is heavier in central Illinois, southwest Wisconsin, southern Indiana, and northwest Kentucky.

Linda,

I had mentioned before that I was interested in Whitfield County, Georgia and that I did a lot of work in the counties bordering the Georgia/Tennessee state line, however I was basically told to keep up the good work.  I had thought you all were interested in people to keep up the counties so am I thinking wrong?

Paula
by Paula Franklin G2G6 Pilot (109k points)

Paula, You were given the United Stated Project badge in 28 Jul 2022 by Liz.  It is on your main page of badges.

Georgia is part of the United States badge so you don't get a separate badge for each state.

Paula, if you would like to discuss ways to assist with the Georgia project, I suggest that you reach out to the project leader or project coordinator.  They're both listed on the Georgia project page here.

Darlene - Co-Leader, United States Project

I did not see a way to reach out to either of them on that page, it only takes me to their personal page.  I must be missing something. I expected a way to either comment or email one of them from that page.
Thanks Linda,

I was not expecting another badge.  I was just hoping someone from the state project would contact me since I was hoping to help with the counties in my area.
When you are on a member's page, select the 'send private message' link next to their name.  Then you can send them a message with your offer to help.  I am sure that Paula and Mary will be happy to have the help.
Paula, do as Linda said to send a PM to one or both people.  They have no way ot knowing you are interested in a specific state and/or county unless you reach out to them.  We allow members to work as much or as little as they would like, and many like to do their own thing, so it is up to each person to contact a project leader or coordinator to discuss their interests.  Thanks.

I am willing to provide Ohio Research Assistance specifically for Erie County and Sandusky County.  I don't see how to add this to my profile; perhaps someone can help me out with that.

I am also researching the historic settlements of Mustcash (a non-county area, then Sandusky County, now Erie County) and Bloomingville (then Huron County, now Erie County) in northern Ohio along the Lake Erie shoreline.
by Kathy Webb G2G1 (1.6k points)

Kathy, Ohio Project has a link on their page for a Catalog for  Research Assistance  that you can add to your profile.  I would also recommend sending a message to Maggie, the leader on that project, to check on how you could help.  I am sure your librarian skills will be very helpful.

I have awarded you the United States Project Badge.  Welcome to wikitree.

Hello! My name is Linda West Hutchison and I live in Wilmington, NC, born in Robeson County which is where most of my maternal ancestors are from. My father's family originated in SC and (I believe) Sampson County, NC. I am slowly adding my info to this tree and can do research for others.
by Linda Hutchison G2G1 (1.4k points)

Hi Linda,

Slowly adding your family is a great way to learn about Wikitree and learning how to source the profiles.

I have awarded you the United States Project Badge. Check the Links to the States Pages.  North and South Carolina are led by the same Leader and Co-ordinator so you could reach out to either of them and see how you could help.

I'm Pam Anderson Smith, team leader of the Unknowns....I spend most of my time on US Unknowns and would LOVE to teach folks working on a certain state how to research those - there are thousands of them...how can we work together??
by Pam Smith G2G6 Mach 2 (28.8k points)

Hi Pam, I have awarded you the United States badge!!

Working on the Unknowns is a great idea.  Maybe we can get all the states to add a link to the Unknowns Team page or something similar.  Let me know how I can help.

Great idea - let's pursue this!!

Hello, my name is Barbara Bretthauer. I would like to participate in the Georgia Project. 80-90% of my maternal ancestors lived in Georgia from 1700-1900 (still have cousins there). Most immigrated from VA to NC then GA. A few surnames are Bryan, O'Berry, Lofley, Little, Cain, Magruder, Fitzpatrick. Thank you in advance.
by Barbara Vetromile G2G1 (1.8k points)

The United States Badge that you were given covers all the United States.  You can check the States section to find an easy link to any page, which would have things each might be working on.  The Ongoing List of Things To Do has a variety of topics or you can reach to any of the Project Leaders or Coordinators on the pages.
