Help Connect US Black Heritage Notables April 2024!

All of these U.S. Black Heritage Project Notables, born in the month of April, need to be connected to the Global Family Tree.  Can you help by adding profiles of family members until a connection to the Global Tree is made?

The current tree size as of 24 Mar  and CC7* as of 31 Mar  is shown for each profile.  During the month of Aprch we will update the sizes weekly for those still unconnected so we can all see any progress made.   Even if a connection is not made, adding even a single profile to a family is helpful and appreciated! (Sizes in red are CC7 on 9 April and Trees as of 7 April if changed).

The ten notables selected for this month, in order of their birthdays, are:

1 Apr:  Jeremiah Haralson, one of first Black Congressmen, CC7: 2, tree:3

4 Apr:   “Muddy Waters, “father of modern Chicago Blues”,  CC7: 1 16   tree:1  16

7 Apr:    Billie Holiday, jazz and swing singer, CC7: 37, tree:38

12 Apr:  Johnny Dodds, jazz musician,  CC7: 13, tree:14

15 Apr:  Alice Catlett, artist and sculptor,  CC7: 16, tree:17  CONNECTED!!

15 Apr:  Asa Phillip Randolph,  labor organizer and activist, CC7: 12, tree:13

19 Apr:  Homer Hogues, Tuskegee Airman, CC7: 13, 40  tree:14  40

23 Apr:  Granville T Woods, inventor and engineer,  CC7: 6, tree: 7  CONNECTED!!

25 Apr:  Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, hip-hop singer and rapper, CC7: 5 7 , tree:  6 8

27 Apr:  Hubert Harrison, writer and activist, “Black Socrates”, CC7: 2, tree:3

If you want to add family to a living Notable, please create the family profile first and send me a request to link the two profiles.

As always, please add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of African-American people, and if you add photographs, make sure they're in the public domain.

For more unconnected USBH Notables profiles, and up-to-date links to this post and the current USBH Connection Challenge, check out the US Black Heritage Connectors Page.

*Tree sizes do not include private profiles or profiles connected thru the private profile.  CC7 does include private profiles, but may not include all profiles in large or extended trees.

Considering he's from my hometown, I feel obliged to work at least a little bit on Granville Woods :-)

What a great list, Katie! I think I'll start with Left Eye Lopes since I was a big TLC fan back in the day.

Thanks Kristen!  She died way too young.

I'll try Jeremiah Haralson since I'm currently a little obsessed with southern legislators in the Reconstruction era.

Thanks Naomi!  I'm glad to have included someone along the lines of your minor obsession, a win-win!

Katie, great list as always thanks for all you do with our notables! I found the parents of Muddy Waters elsewhere on WT (not connected to the big tree but there are a few others in the family) I'll connect those parent profiles and see what I can do from there.

Granville Woods should show up as connected tomorrow! (Via his half sister's grandson's wife smiley )

I think I've got Alice Catlett connected, after a merge goes thru!  A branch of relatives moved to Washington DC and that's one of the highest % rates of USBH connected, btw...72% (almost 3000 profiles).  If you are curious about other states, check out the stats on this USBH spreadsheet, updated quarterly.

Great work Katie!  Thanks for posting the state stats too.
I just linked Johnny Dodd's with an unconnected branch of profiles created by you!  Still unconnected by his CC7 expanded a lot thanks to you.

That's great! love when that happens smiley that line goes back to a local notable I haven't worked on it in a while but I'll dig around and see if I can find anything would be nice to get them both connected. I'm not having any luck finding a path for Muddy so far I'm afraid I've spent more time searching than connecting.
