March 2016 Sourcerers' Challenge!

Thank you to everyone who participated in February's Sourcerers' Challenge. The February Top Sourcerer was Star Kline, with 388 profiles improved. Way to go, Star!

The current All Time Top Sourcerer is Robert Keniston with 2545 profiles improved. Fantastic :-)

For the month of February there were 27 Sourcerers and 1,758 profiles sourced, making our total for 2016 3602 profiles so far.

Wonderful work, everyone! To see the rest of the results, check out the Sourcerers Challenge page.

We want to up the ante for the rest of 2016. The sources you all are adding are fantastic. Now that WikiTree has done some work on clarifying what we ask for in citing a source, your sources need to be cited as closely to the recommended Sources help page as possible, or they cannot count towards your tally. That means, if there is a link to the work mentioned, you must include it. If it is a page from a book, the page needs to be included so others can easily see where you found the reference. The more specific, the more useful the source.

We can also do a bit more while adding sources, like clean up the gedcom leftovers or help the formatting from older profiles. Sources are important, but if you can't find them among all the other stuff, they aren't helping as much as they could.

Onto March's challenge:

You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles, continuing in a comment on your answer as necessary. Please number your contributions (a number every ten or hundred works just fine). It helps us tally at the end of the month much faster. See last month's challenge for examples.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories <http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unsourced_Profiles  or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you can't create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access. Another great source of unsourced profiles is to check out orphaned profiles.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better. Maybe we'll switch things up and see how many sources added y'all can do one month.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree" or "Geni.com" it can count as unsourced, and you can add better sources to it to count in your tally.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already source profile, that counts, too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. Awesome!

We are now actively in our March Challenge, which will run through March 31st. Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, GO!

Yep, what Carolyn said. Thank to both of you!
Thank you! Abby & Carolyn
Beulah, I think you posted this in the wrong comment section. Needs to go on your comment area.

I was working away -- busy busy, then "restarting windows, installing windows 10". I had 4 programs running plus my browser. Never mind, windows operating system took over. I was never going to install windows 10 as I have a crappy computer but my wishes did not count. Three hours later (and its late) I am back on but now there will be a learning curve.  Woe is me ... :-(

Just had to vent.

I feel your pain Myrtis. I had a survey question on some site that asked when or if I was upgrading to Windows 10. I said NEVER - course I have a MAC
Anne B, My husband has 2 MACs and he has been trying for years to get me to switch.  I am thinking it is about time.  I was a computer analyst and I am so dependent upon the applications that I use. But even those applications are slowly being fazed out or one can only use them by a month-to-month paid subscription. Either go with the flow or find a new river. :)
I've used both for long periods of time, so have no problem switching between one and the other. About the only noticeable difference is what they call things. And the close X buttons are in different corners. My husband had a PC, but then it got something that ate all the documents on it. So I bit the bullet and spent the money for a Mac for him too.
Is there a way to see the standings of the current challenge, see who you're up against? ;)
Not until the end, Antonia.  There is no automated count - it's all manually done by Abby.  And she has her work cut out for her this month!  I've been doing an unofficial count every few days, and 11 participants had 100 or more improved profiles as of yesterday.
Okay, I only ask because I read through the comments and thought I saw someone mentioning it. At least I know now I'm not chasing my own tail trying to find it :)

I'm gonna try and improve some Nova Scotia unsourced profiles. I like the added bonus of doing county level categories.

Great sources, Brad!
Thanks, Star! I was looking through some of your sourced profiles for hints how to do it, since I'm a bit new. I wasn't sure whether to include all the information from the source, or just the citation. I've been opting for the full information dump ... I hope it doesn't look too cluttered.

Do more-experienced wikitreers have strong preferences about style?
I usually opt to list only the citation because some records, like census records, can include a lot of data.  I don't want to discourage anyone from working on the biographies because there's too much to clean up.  (Just my opinion.)
Hiya Brad, I think we all have our own preferences with style, I do post the information that is in the Source (if it isn't too wordy), especially if it is from a sighting of a document, scan etc, not everything is available online for others to view for themselves and also not everything will stay as it is now.. example the Dutch Records on a particular website were free, but now you have to have a subscription to view... also links can change/move.  However with this in mind, some people will remove this information in a profile preference for a single line of reference instead. If the profile is very long with citations I will opt for a scrolling reference box, keeping things neater.
Brad, Thanks for sourcing with us this month. Some times I add the data to the source, more often not, if I've included all of it in the bio and added inline footnotes <ref></ref>
I have ancestors from Nova Scotia, Brad. Thanks for adding sources to the family :-)

Go Star!. Not only are you cheering everyone on, but you're out there sourcing away too.
Appreciate you cheering everyone on. See you have a long list of profile  enhancements also.

I ran into one orphaned family with two mothers and one husband. There were multiple duplicates and children attached to the wrong  mother. Then one mother also had a second husband not on Wikitree. The husband was the father of some of the children that were attached to the wrong father.   Scratching my head here but bit the bullet. Added the missing husband, merged the duplicates, corrected the parents  and added sources with bios. It was a rush for me once completed. I felt this family now has a solid base for hopefully their decendants will one day see and appreciate. Adding sources now has a whole new meaning for me. Sources are the legacy for most of these profiles abandoned by the original managers.

Boy can I  bloviate. But it's about you, Star thanks. You are inspiring.
Thanks for your comments, Ladies.

Myrtis, I completely understand the rush you felt!  Though the Harmon kids were all connected to the correct parents, there were two old gedcom imports that duplicated those 11 kids.  Two of the boys have the middle name Hill, so when I saw another son named Hill, I thought I might have found a triplicate.  I didn't want to rely on census records alone - we all know what problems lie there.  Fortunately, I found old birth records for all the children.  I know this challenge requires only one source per profile, but I just can't do that and hope that the next person will do more.  I want WikiTree profiles to be much more accurate than what we've all found on Ancestry and other sites.

This is another 'Oh My' list of sourced profiles. Thank you. !!! Actually the first three really caught my eye, because I thought you were doing a census of the town I live in Fourniers, Poiriers and Provosts.
Thanks, Anne. My fella is related to the Fourniers of Upstate New York, and Canada.  Maybe you are related.  He is Phillip Conte.  I posted his family lines for him.
A lot of French Canadians came to the northeast corner of Connecticut to work in the mills here and just over the border in Massachusetts during the 1800's, so probably a distant... relative
Whoa, Carolyn, what a month! Thank you for all those sources. That was amazing.
Thanks, Abby. It was fun.

Glad to see you join the challenge, Charlotte!
Only the profile manager can change the LNAB.  If this is an orphaned profile, you can adopt it, and then change the LNAB.  If the profile has a manager, you can post a note on the profile page telling the profile manager about the name change.
Good to know the info about LNAB.  I'll post a note as you suggest.
Did you know that you have doubled your previous personal best (September 2015 - 10 profiles improved)?  Way to go, Charlotte!!
Thank you Charlotte for sourcing in the March Sourcerer's Challenge, I love every sourced profile.
It's nice to see you back with us this month, Charlotte. Thank you for those sources.

Last month, I experienced both the highs and lows of being a participant of the Sourcerers' Challenge.

The low: A veteran sent me a nasty email about changing his profile's data and I'll share how I decided to reply back:

"There is no doubt that you have worked very hard on the profiles you've created and the WikiTree community recognizes you for that. We should also acknowledge that following the Honor Code is also something that should be considered before sending harshly worded emails that we may regret. All profiles need source records as noted in Section VIII of the Honor Code we follow as members of this website.

Take care to review this because it's been expanded since 2012 when you first joined.

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Honor_Code

If privacy is a concern, this can be updated on the privacy tab of the profiles you've created.

Thank you."

And then there was the high: I edited Faucher-139, and later discovered that the profile owner may be a distant cousin through my deep family connections in Canada. And then Cheryl awarded me a "Generous Genealogist" badge.

Here we go with my efforts towards March 2016 Sourcerers' Challenge:

Congratulations on earning the "Generous Genealogist" badge, Judi.  And thanks for joining this month's challenge. I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience.  I don't know what was in the air in February, but I received my first harsh note about sourcing, too.  Actually, I received three of them.  One person deleted the sources and changed the privacy on the profiles.  You may want to consider looking at the Orphaned Profiles, since many of these are unsourced - and they have no profile managers.

I haven't had any harsh words on adding sources.. yet. After 25,000+ edits I have had only really annoyed person. I think my batting average may be better than most. I have had a few polite notes back where I was a bit aggressive with edits that I agreed with their comments. I tend to spend time cleaning up areas that are in the old ignored unsourced gedcoms area - where no one is watching and getting annoyed.
One person told me she only wanted someone who could prove a family connection to edit her family profiles.  I told her I would not edit any other files that she manages.  Then I referred her to the honor code that says "we collaborate on profiles" and warned her that others might also edit them.

Another person told me that she only wanted original sources listed on the profiles she manages, said she didn't want me to add any sources that listed microfilm references, and asked me to remove them.  I told her she cold edit the profiles and remove whatever sources she found offensive, and she removed all the sources I had added and changed the privacy on those profiles.

About a week later, I submitted Mentor Intervention Requests for both of them, hoping to prevent similar interactions with others.
What's more challenging, the profile managers or finding good sources? Don't feel some really honor the honor code. Receiving the "you made a positive difference" now that's a high.
Great response to that disgruntled member, Judi.  I had one a few days ago thank me on adding to a profile, but then turn around and tell me the information was incorrect. I have written her twice to find out which profile she was talking about so I could correct it, but she hasn't responded.  It doesn't appear to be the one she thanked me for.

Another guy wrote me and said my information was correct but "who are you and why are you interested in my mother?" I sent him a link to this challenge page and tried to explain why I added to his mother's profile.

It is easier to work on the orphaned profiles.
Sorry to hear that you've experienced this too, Carolyn.  It certainly can put a damper on participating in this Challenge, which is why I suggested the Orphaned profiles.  Not all orphaned profiles are unsourced, but many are, and no profile managers to worry about.
It's very discouraging to hear some of these stories, BUT you all are amazing, and thank you for continuing to improve the tree and respond to people with a bit more kindness than they sometimes give you. You all embody the spirit we aim for in the community-helping others even when you have no clear connection to them and treating them well even when they are upset. What an amazing group of WikiTreers!
Judi, that's two interesting stories, the down and the up. Very nice response you gave. Thank you for coming back to source some more.
Thank you for the additions this month, Judi. They're so appreciated!

Thanks for sourcing with us again, Peter.  My great-great grandfather was born in Manchester, so I love to see someone providing sources for people from that area.
Peter, Thanks for joining us for the March Sourcerer's Challenge.
Thanks for the sources, Peter. Great additions.

Welcome back to the Sourceres Challenge, Beulah - we missed you the last few months!
I took the time I spent on wikitree to bring up to date my grandmother's generation with newly indexed information I found.
Thanks for the reminder, Beulah.  I need to spend some time focusing on my family profiles, too.
Finished unsourced Maltbys and saw a long line of Manns.  Offered to help, it was accepted so...

Welcome to the Sourceres Challenge, Cheryl.  Great sourcing on this Chapman family!  You did a nice job with the bios, and the one for Samuel must have taken quite a while to do.
Thank you for your comment, Star.  I do usually write at least a short bio, and in some cases more detailed bio whenever I add a source to the profiles I am working on.  I'm sure enjoying my work on WikiTree,  it is gratifying, valuable, and just pain fun!

Welcome to the Sourcerers Challenge, Lori!  Nice job on the Fowlkes family.  I'm sure that your background as a Technical Librarian helps you to be such a great sourcerer.  Keep up the great work!
I took a peak at Thompson. That's a lot of sources. Thank you so much for joining the March Sourcerer's Challenge
We're happy to have you, Lori. Thank you for those contributions!
Thanks. I'm loving WikiTree because of the ability to include sources and actually write things out, explaining conflicting evidence and so forth. I just wish I had more hours in a day so I could make better progress in adding my own lines.
Thanks, Abby!
