Need help deciphering headstone dates.

Question

Can someone with enhancing pictures ability interpret the dates for deaths of Nellie and Samuel Shipp on their headstone?  Use the Find A Grave link listed under sources.

I read it as:

Samuel Essmond Shipp
Feb.20,1849 - Sept.17,1923.
Nellie Maltby
his wife
Died May 22,1940
their son
E. Maltby
May 15,1882—Oct.21,1955

*edit: corrected to use commas instead of periods before years

Thank you Rob.  I knew the Sept. month but couldn't  comfortably guess at the rest of Samuel's date.  We also have Nellie's too.
