Question

We have profiles for all US Presidents and Vice Presidents, and for most of their Ancestors.   Think you are related?  What we are trying to do is fill in the aunts, uncles, cousins, children to find modern day "relatives" by adding new profiles to Wikitree for family that has not been documented to date.

It can be all too easy to get sucked into this...  I linked myself to Theodore Roosevelt while watching a television program about him. I thought, "Hmm, I'll bet we are related," so I looked up his ancestry online (not just at WikiTree), found a family name that I recognized from my own ancestry (Yates), researched his Yates ancestor (who was a dead end on the T.R. family tree I started out with), and before the end of the program he and I were cousins!

Hey Robin. I'm lost on What you are wanting done.  According to the relationship finder I'm related to all but 2 Presidents as are many people on wikitree.  I have many current cousins I'm connected to on wikitree where we connect to the same Presidents.  What specifically do we need for do?  I recently connected Hunnicutt-97 to his daughter Katherine , which gave me a closer relationship to President Carter thru the line that was already attached to her. But the down line is all wonky , and needs alot of work on dates .  It could be years before that could get squared away.  I've been trying for years to find my mum's connections to Grant. And Martha Washington.  Somehow the Dandridge connection on my dad's side isn't there anymore. I have a connection to Martha Washington though Daniel Parke Custis through both my mum and father.

I believe the idea is to research the genealogies of siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, etc., of presidents and fill in their family trees.

Yes, there are grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews of Presidents and Vice Presidents without profiles, looking for help to get those extended family members documented.   Don't forget that sourcing is key in the process.   Some of the connections we had were proven incorrect by proper sourcing.

According to Wikitree you are 13th cousin 4 times removed from Grant. And you are not related to Van Buren, Woodrow Wilson, McKinley, Jackson and Eisenhauer. That jcertainly earns you a place on Wikitree Tops. It also suggests that you may know lines we are not aware of. Which is great.

Sir William , most Presidents are not related to them either from What I have worked out on paper .   The funny thing about Grant is I'm supposed to be related to him on my mum's side.  We are Grants from Westmoreland , West Virginia. And should tie in to Martha Washington's children from her first husband through mum's Parke-Custis side .  I am having a horrible time trying to track William and Isabella Grant from Scotland , the only info I have on them. But all the people I am supposed to be related to on mum's side I can't find a path to and my father's side , which I didn't care about has all the ties to mum's relations I've been told about. Mum and my father have to be distant cousins.  I recently connected Augustine and Mary Carter Hunnicutt's daughter Katherine to Samuel Kindred , which makes her direct ancestor of Jimmy Carter. Not proven yet. When I connected Katherine that Made Augustine and Mary ,  Jimmy Carter's 8th grand parents and my ninth. But the lines down on wikitree are such a mess profile wise there is so much work on dates it could take me years to research and just get the down line squared away. I'm not sure the relationship is valid. But before that I had 2 other cousin relationships to Carter. And many other multiple relations to other presidents.  But some how the relationship to Jimmy Carter down from Mary Carter Hunnicutt through Katherine ties into the Carter's from another branch which should give me another cousin relationship .  I can't do much in the way of editing profiles. I have MS my mind has some issues. But I can track relationships like a blood hound. You may be correct about my knowing lines outside the flow.  I've connected several Jamestown families that keep leading deeper into the lines. What is of interest to me is I thought there would eventually come a descendant who would incorporate , so to speak , all of these various lines which branch off and kind of swing back to where they branch off into kind of braided relationships. I'm not explaining this well. There is a great new member who actually may have these lines. She is probably my closest relation on wikitree. But both her parents tie into to each other's lines as I think mine do. Which makes more of a spider web that a tree .  But pulls in ... a wider range of ancestors.  I see it very clearly in my mind I just can't explain how it works very well. It probably makes no sense to anyone else. But it is easily seen if one works the descendant lines down from several families from an area.  Anyway I have all kinds of research and no abilities computer wise. Thank You for your comment.  I've been awake for almost two days hope I was at least a little coherent.  According to wikitree I am related to the wives of. Wilson ,  Edith Bolling , 14 th 5 removed that is a new line for me.  McKinley , Ida Saxton , 20th once removed.  Eisenhower Mamie Doud 14 th twice removed. No connection on my father's side to Jackson or Van Buren.

Hey Sir William.  According to wikitree I am related to 20 Presidents wives , which should make them cousins to each other and many of the Presidents.  The field of connecting ancestors is relatively small. One ancestor I found in both wives and Presidents I have never seen in my other ancestors is Thomas Markenfield. That one should open my horizons a bit.

Braided relationships sounds like a good explanation to me. We have that in the narrow gene pool of Italian families in Alia, Sicilia. The same families married into each other over and over again. I think it was called "keeping it in the family". If you owned land, you only let your children marry other land owners so that all descendants could inherit something. Siblings from one farm married siblings from another. I am sure that happened in many places, not just rural Italy.

Hello folks!

My name is Donald Scott Lee and I use my middle name, Scott (long story).

I have always known that dear ol' George was a relation as far back as I can remember.  I am 71, so that goes back a long way.  However, back in grade school, I was an eighth cousin.  Today, I am a third cousin.  I guess that is as close as I will ever get!  I have visited Mt. Vernon a couple of times and I can't get any closer, they tell me.

I am also cousins to both Adams, John and Quincy.  Grover Cleveland is there too, and then there is my favorite, Barry!  I sure there are others, but then we are all cousins, aren't we?

I love history, I have a degree in East Asian Studies, as I went to college in Japan.  Even though I studied the Far East, American History is my favorite and I can tell you right now, I only know a piece of it!

Everyday on WikiTree brings me closer to my ancestors.  I have a small website of my own, that I am building for my grandkids, if they can ever get off their iPhones and learn a little about why they are here!

Hey George.  Do you have a possible relationship to Van Buren ,  Wilson , McKinley , Jackson and Eisenhaur.   I have found many people can trace a possible relationship to the other Presidents but lack a relationship to these.  Nor  have I not found a possible relationship to George Washington to these Presidents yet.  I haven't checked in about month.  I would be interested in your connections.

My Geni World Tree shows ALL Presidents are cousins.  Van Buren is my 13th cousin five times removed with 31 ancestors between.  I added my Geni GEDCOM (which may have George Washington) to WikiTree but I got message "your file is too large for importing".  It shows 588 direct views.  My Geni tree is 5485 people including 1158 direct line.  Geni has a limited view only option which has 257 directs but is of little value as to shows 4 generations horizontally.  I tried to give access to a Trump's lineage but it required a password. I have printouts of my lineage to each President if there is a way to send some to you.

I am cousin to many famous people including European royalty (Julius Caesar is grandfather, Henry VIII is an uncle, Queens Mary of Scots, Vic, Liz I & II, Princess Di, Louis XIV, Napoleon are direct cousins).  Royalty is well documented and profiles are locked to prevent changes.

Hi everyone: I have been working on that. My mother told me we were related to a lot of presidents. I did not believe her at first but as I have dug more into wikitree I have found I am 12 cousins to George bush, 9 cousins 5 times removed from Jimmy carter, 20th cousins 2 times removed from John Kennedy, 16th cousins 3 times removed from Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington 8th cousins 8 times removed, Ronald Reagan 16th cousins once removed, Abraham Lincoln 13th cousins 4 times removed and 10th cousins  7 times removed from Zachary Taylor.

Between my two parents, I believe I am cousin to 39 of the U.S. Presidents. However, I would like to know more about my family connection to them. My maternal grandparents had told me we were related to President Garfield, and things just progressed from there.

We used to say, if we held up a dollar bill next to my paternal grandmother's photo, they would look like twins. Never in a million years did I think (then) that she was really related to him. It is amazing to see old photos of distant ancestors, and then notice one of your now-living relations looks eerily like them (i.e. My father has a striking resemblance (almost a twin) to my 8x Great-Uncle, Benjamin Wadsworth (early President of Harvard University & Pastor to the First Church in Boston) and my spouse's father looks eerily like his great-grandfather.

Updated:  Okay, make that 40 Presidents within 30 generations.

With your 38 Presidents, you got me by two.  Seriously, it is one of the most interesting WikiTree project areas.  Many of us have common ancestor relationships.   

A President relationship search I did with George Washington indicated we were "20 degrees distant" and we shared common grandparents,  Samuel Warren & Mary (Downing) Warren.     

 What else have you discovered about the President's relationship finder search or other WikiTree things about Presidents that I could check out?

My Great Grandmother said we were related to President Zachary Taylor.  He was a distant uncle.  My Aunt Jackie did a ton of research and found that we were the 9 or 10 cousin not sure how many time removed. She has lost her information as it was done in the 90’s and creating back ups were not done. My Great grandmothers is a Taylor from Kentucky.  Any help will be greatly appreciated and anything I can Help with I’ll be happy to do.  If we can find the link then I know we are related to 5 president through marriages.

​Ron, That was so awesome you finding out who our ancestors were, and finding where the connection was. I am connected with Noble_Group on here, by adding and connecting any new information that could, and connect people of our wikitree.com.

That is how I ended on the Noble group, because I can fill in a lot of holes in pedigree's that needs placement of their ancestors to move on to the next Great Grandparent farther back in time. I can do that with presidents, also if they would like help.

I also edit on Wikipedia, and write for them also.

​I can feel we are related also. Their are so many Notable people that need their pedigree's finished, and I am going to try and help fill in any gaps.

We all are descendants of the founding people of this Country, and need to be proud of who they were. I hope.

I am 100% European according to my DNA, and my ancestors were the first to step out of the Mayflower dingy into The land of the new world.  As a teenager, because I thought History class was torture, I didn't want to learn anything to do about the past. Now I love reading about the heartaches they had to deal everyday.

Last night I decided to check just for fun, how many of the US Presidents I am related to, and I was really surprised at what I found out.

I am Cousins with every President, with the exception of Donald Trump, William McKinley, Martin Van Buren, Woodrow Wilson, and Dwight Eisenhower. I could not check if I am Cousin to Jimmy Carter, or Bill Clinton, but I am related to the other 36 Presidents, which I am totally amazed, and shocked. by.  I just thought I would share that info on here.

It is very simple to learn if you are related to US presidents, Go to Relationship Finder and type in your name and number and that of the president you wish to know about. For instance I typed in Washington-11 and Walsworth-4 (my name and number- and found that I am Georges 11th cousin 6 times removed. I did this for all of the presidents and found I am a cousin of nearly all of them (all but 4 but 2 of those 4 by marriage). Current president not included.

Since we already figured out we're cousins I'd be curious where we overlap with the pilgrims. I'm descended from about half the people from on board the Mayflower.

I am 5th cousin to William Jefferson Clinton (Bill).  We are related thru the Cassidy's.  His mother Virginia Dell Cassidy descended from Zachariah Cassity (Cassidy) abt 1755-1830  thru one of his sons Levi (1790-1850) and my family descended thru Zachariah Cassity (Cassidy) thru another son, Zachariah, Jr. (1805-1880).

Is there any easy way to find out if we are related to the Presidents? Or do we need to enter 44 names one at a time?

I am not aware of being related to any President, but I do have relatives who were medical professionals that attended the Johnsons and the Humphries.

Do you have to have English ancestors to be related to the Presidents? I have Irish and German mostly. Maybe I will find a link to Kennedy or Reagan???

Most of the presidents were of Scots (mainly Scots-Irish) or English derivation, and most of our credibly mapped relationships to presidents are based on people who lived in America for at least part of their lives.With all(?) of your ancestral lines being relatively recent immigrants, you are not very likely to find such a relationship.

Eisenhower had mostly German ancestry, but most of his lines aren't traced very far back. And Barack Obama has some Irish ancestry that's not Scots-Irish.

Maybe someday we will get an non-English or non-Scottish president, probably not this year.

This reminds me of the Roman Catholic Church. Most of the popes were Italian  Finally they found a Polish one, and now one from Argentina, but I think he is part Italian. My husband could end up be related to a pope with all his Italian ancestors.

I am probably more likely related to Fineen O'Driscoll the Rover! LOL! I do have Driscoll ancestors :)

I didn't mention all of the presidential nationalities -- only the two dominant ones plus the two in your heritage.

Martin Van Buren was Dutch, and has fewer known relatives in America than most of the presidents do. Carrie Quackenbush and I are both related to him, but we're outliers in that regard. The two Roosevelts also had both Dutch and Huguenot (French) ancestors, and Gerald Ford had Dutch ancestors. And, of course, Barack Obama's father was from Kenya.

Actually our current President Donald J. Trump is Huguenot on (I think his dad's side). They are listed as German but that is only because they had fled to Germany during the 14th or 15th century persecutions of French Protestants and had then taken German surnames. I believe that for purely political reasons most US Presidents' ancestries are not listed past King John of England and many not even that far back. Tim Dowling has the most comprehensive listing I have found for US Presidents. The one for Andrew Jackson goes back to 1st Century AD. The list includes cousins, in-laws & their ancestors as well so is much broader in scope that a simple family tree limited to direct ancestors & 1st cousins & so is quite interesting to say the least.

Something else: As you know, I've been working on people with US Counties named after them lately. Bryan County, Oklahoma is named after William Jennings Bryan, who ran for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908. Never won. Is there a category for losing (major party) candidates, or you want to wait till after Veeps and Cousins? It is easier in my case to mention the presidents I am not related to (excluding the current president): Woodrow Wilson, William McKinley and Dwight Eisenhower.

As I've already posted on G2G, I have now found 4 presidents I'm a blood relation (cousin) to, James Garfield, Herbert Hoover and both George H W Bush and George W Bush, with a separate line for W through his mother.  

The thing I've seen is that lines for the most part have not had the connections made confident.  Yesterday I made 4 links confident on my side of the relationship with James Garfield. I did this because all four of the presidents link via a Scott line and therefore they were 4 times a useful as other connections.  But now I want to do some work on the president's side since they may firm up many links so they are IMO vital to being a useful reference for others wanting to prove their links to U.S Presidents. So I'm looking for a badge and permission / encouragement to firm up our presidental links.

I am a descendent of George Washington and a profile manager for him as well. I haven't been completely devoted to Wikitree for the past few months, however, with the start of summer, I am interested in cleaning up George and his relatives' profiles by adding sources and information which isn't already there. I'm also interested in expanding and confirming George's close relatives using my knowledge of my connection as well as reputable sources such as scans of the Washington family bible and official birth, marriage, and death records if they haven't already been sourced.
