Do you have a favorite site/book for historical Irish sources?

As I have been going through https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:High_Kings_of_Ireland I have been collecting sources and been adding them to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Historical_Sources_of_Ireland I'm now at a point that I need some input as to how to organize them.

I guess my question(s) are

1. Did I miss your favorite book/site? If so please add it or let me know and I'll add it.

2. Is this organized in a useful manner?

3. Should a Wikitree space be added for each book? Such as Rick Pierpoint's https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Annals_of_the_Kingdom_of_Ireland_by_the_Four_Masters

That is a very impressive lists of sources. As you already know, I like to create a Free-Space page for each source, but others are creating simple lists of sources. I've created several simple lists of sources, but they can't take advantage of many features offered by WikiTree Free-Space pages:

  • Free-Space pages have a "What Links Here", which shows where the source is being used on WikiTree.
  • If you want, you can give examples of the source usage, so people can simply copy-and-paste the source into profiles. Makes adding sources very easy.
  • Many sources are available at multiple locations, each has their own advantage and disadvantages. A Free-Space profile can list all of them.
  • A Free-Space page can give additional information about the source, such as information about the author/compiler, reliability of the source, or perhaps an explanation about what is exactly covered in the source. I sometimes include a "Table of Contents" for the source.
  • Free-Space pages can be assigned Tags and Categories. This makes it easier for others to find the source.
  • Free-Space pages can be organized by location. This is another method to help people find the source. An example: Source.
  • WikiTree has a "Free-Space Search" capability, so others can search for specific sources others may have created.
  • Free-Space pages each have their own manager, so everyone can contribute and manage their own contribution.
  • If you create a Free-Space page, anyone else can create their own lists of sources, using links to your Source Free-Space pages.

Creating a Free-Space page certainly takes more time than creating a simple list of sources, but I think it is worth the time. There are now over 3,500 Free-Space pages for sources on WikiTree. I try to add one or two new sources every day.

I have recently used this book from 1779 ?. Usually I thought a more recent edition would supercede the early publication. But this book included many of the daughters are which later editions just do not mention.

"The Peerage of Ireland" by John Lodge, revised by Mervyn Archdall, publ 1779 ? vol 7 p 261-2 https://archive.org/stream/peerageofireland07lodg#page/261/mode/1up

I don't have any books yet, but am looking for the best place to search Ennistymon & Milltown Malbay, Clare, in the 1800's.  I can't seem to break through my wall searching for O'Rourke & O'Connell families.  Is anyone is able to point me in the right direction?

Hi Mary Beth

you might try looking at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Sources-Ireland-Province-County

the church records will be the best sources for that time frame

With names like O'Rourke & O'Connell You also might try the Peerages. I just added some sources to the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Historical_Sources_of_Ireland Some of them run from 1100's to current times. If you can tie into one of those you'll have it made. Good luck and good hunting. Let me know if you need some more help.
