Puritan Great Migration Project (PGM). Want to Join? [closed]

Do you have ancestors who immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640?

At WikiTree, this time period is covered by the Puritan Great Migration Project (PGM), although not everyone who immigrated during the time frame was a Puritan.

There are several ways to participate in the PGM Project.

A. Acknowledge. To acknowledge that you have ancestors who immigrated 1621-1640, place this sticker on your own profile: PGM Ancestor Name. (Copy and Paste to your profile. Replace the highlighted area with your ancestor's information.)  For example: William Swift

B. Be Informed & Learn. Do you want to improve your understanding of PGM-era profiles and know what’s going on with the project? Are you new to WikiTree, and think you might want to join the project in the future? Read the Project page. Follow the G2G tag  pgm .

C. Contribute Do you love puzzles, enjoy research and improving sourcing on profiles? Then you might want to actively participate in the improvement of PGM profiles. As common ancestors to so many generations, these profiles often have duplicates needing merging, and incorrect data that needs sourcing and correcting. If this interests you, please read the Project page to find out more details. Follow the tag  pgm , and request the badge by posting an answer to this question. Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing. NOTE: After receiving your badge, you will be asked to join the PGM Google Group, which is one of the tools project volunteers use to track PGM profiles.

Hint! it is absolutely a pre-requisite of improving PGM profiles that you know how to work with and create inline citations.

Thank you

I noticed this article recently

https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-newsletter-v1-25/image?pageName=1&volumeId=21154

that states Anderson's PGM project ends in 1643. Have I been wrong in my recollection that the Wikitree project only goes to 1640?

The PGM project only goes to 1640. Maybe Jillaine and I will have to scratch our heads together, but I have to say we have quite enough with end of 1640.
Thank you for pointing out the article on PGM end.

Now that Jillaine and I have both read the article, I can address the comment. We've decided that for the moment the Wikitree project will continue to end at those who arrived by 1640 with a little "wiggle" room. The project is quite big enough now without adding another few years to the parameters.
Sounds good.
Hi Anne,

I have an ancestor or two on my Brick Wall list.  I would like to join the PGM project as I seem to have a number of ancestors in there.  I spent the other day collecting information on the parents of Hammelsbach-1.  However, I want to sort thru the information and go back on Ancestry.  I also printed the profiles of others that were missing one or more parents the other day to see if I can find them.

The parents of Maria Barbara (Hammelsbach) Happolt

Profile Hammelsbach-1 her parents are Susann Werlings and Joannes Adamus Himmelsbach.  I want to review all the information as there are so many different ways they are spelling the same names

Taylor

Taylor, please answer the question and provide the ID or URL for a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing.

If I have more than one Puritan ancestor, how would you code it?

[[WikiTree-ID

Or

PGM Ancestor Name

PGM Ancestor Name

Thanks!

Hi Norman, the first way doesn't work. So you have to do each one. If I listed all my PGM ancestors, they would take up a lot of space on my profile, so I picked my favorite ancestor and used

Nathaniel Turner and more
Does "closed" mean I can't join the project. Have a few qualify ancestors. One has been proven by the NSSDP.

Hi Ellen, thank you for your interest. This is just an older question. You can go to the new question to join New Question

I am a descendant of Roger Conant, William Bradford, and many others who traveled to the New World during the Great Migration.  I am interested in tracking down, where I can, which ships brought my ancestors over.  I would love to be  part of your Project.  I am in the process of going back to correctly reference the details on the profiles of my family members.  Here is one that I have just completed:

Lucy Ann Conant Emmons, Conant-830

I have a number of ancestors who fall under the PGM category. The one I am most interested in is William Jones, a mason who lived in Charlestown in Massachusetts. William is the many time great grandfather of my maternal grandfather, the man who sparked my interest in genealogy many years ago. The evidence I have putting him in New England before 1640 is scanty, but I think qualifies him for the PGM project. He is said to be an early settler of Charleston and his son Thomas was born there in 1645. Here is the profile I assembled with all the information I have found on him so far. William Jones

Welcome to the Puritan Great Migration Project. Nice job with William's profile. Please send me a private comment (that gives me your email) so I can invite you to the google group.
Thank you, I will do so!

Shona, I've just taken on the role of responding to requests to join the PGM project and in reviewing this thread I realize your request may have slipped through the cracks. Our apologies. Are you still interested?

Hi, although I  am new to Wikitree,  I  have been a genealogist for over 40 years.  I  have many colonial ancestors that I  have researched, but in particular I  would like to assist on the Capt. John Luther page, as it has been full of errors in the past and still has the wrong wife listed. I have done a lot of Luther research,  am a member of the Luther Family Association,  and the Luther DNA project Administrator at Family Tree DNA. I have just started to my lineage, but one of the profiles I  worked on was to clean up the sources and add the lineage of Andreas J. Irion.
by Sherrye Woodworth G2G6 (6.2k points)
Sherrye, not sure if you heard back from us at the project. My apologies. I think our attention was diverted last spring. Are you still interested in joining PGM?
Yes, I am.  I have mostly finished entering my ancestors (and my husbands), so now I will be concentrating on going back and adding better bios and good sourcing. I have many colonial lines and recently joined NEHGS to help with the problem lines.  I am a member of the DAR, Mayflower, Daughters of 1812, and Colonial Dames.  The Colonial Dames has really lit a fire under me to finish proving my colonial lines, especially the COA ancestors.

I'm intending to use a little of my stay-at-home time to improve some profiles of my ancestor [Everest-190|Andrew Everest]'s descendants, many of which I added some years back. At the time I created those profiles I was mostly or completely unaware of the the PGM project, so none of these are formatted as the project would prefer.  On the other hand, (and while I have received a good deal of generous help from wikitreers) my errors have not attracted any significant concern from "forces for good" on the Wikitree--so maybe I haven't broken anything badly enough to get noticed. I'm not really interested in being a PGM project member, I'd sort prefer being a "fellow traveler', but one who is not burdening the project with a lot of mess to clean up.

by Dwight Petersen G2G6 (8.1k points)

Hi Dwight, Thanks for introducing yourself. Maybe we need a "fellow traveler" badge. smiley You are welcome to edit project profiles without belonging to the project, just make sure you can source what you're adding.

The source that you used for Andrew by Holman is no doubt an excellent source considering the author. I see he also has a sketch in the Genealogical dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire Vol 2 p. 226

From what's currently on his profile, it doesn't look as though Andrew was in New England by 1640, so probably is not part of the Puritan Great Migration.

Enjoy the ancestor discovery.

Thanks.  Yes, I have been working on Andrew by looking at as many of his fellow neighbors as I could. There certainly is no documentary proof that he was in New England by 1640. Close certainly, but no proof.  In looking at his neighbors meaning those who like Andrew had there real estate grants confirmed in 1655 when Massachusetts "bought" Maine, those I can find anything about seem to be about the same age as Andrew, and probably from the same area of England.  But while they may have all arrived in NE at very young ages (maybe 20) even all at once it is a bit of a stretch.

Hi there,

My name is Grant Sipsey and I am interested in joining your project to learn more about my ancestors who emigrated, particularly Captain John Wood, and better follow the trail that leads back from him.

I look forward to working with you all, and contributing to your noble goal.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Grant Sipsey

Hello!

I would like to help the PGM Project as I have numerous ancestors that left England for Colonial America during that time. I have included below a profile that I have created and sourced below.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wheeler-19171

Thank you!

by Megan Stoltz G2G Crew (410 points)

Megan, I don't see from this profile, that you know how to write a biography or create inline citations. Inline citations are an absolute necessity for PGM profiles. Would you like to try writing a biography using inline citations for your ancestress Martha (Beers) Buckely. or any one else you would like to choose.

Example bio: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Porter-10634

Anne,

My apologies, that profile is still being worked on so the bio is a bit brief due to conflicting information and only accounts for 2 separate inline citations.

I have updated the bio and sources per the link you provided for Martha Beers, as suggested.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beers-31
Thanks!

Much Better. Thank you. Welcome to the Puritan Great Migration Project.
Meghan, did I send you an invitation to join the PGM google group? If not please send me a private message so I have your email.

Welcome to the Puritan Great Migration Project.
Thanks to all who helped clarify Christopher Avery's suspect 2nd wife and remove her. My information was inadequate to confirm or refute him having 2nd wife.

Good progress being made on his profile.

Thanks to everyone for help.

I am an academic with a special scholarly interest in African and African American history, but also have a number of (some 25) Great Migration Ancestors: William Pynchon, John Prentys, Rev. Peter Bulkeley, Capt. Richard Lord, Jemina Coolidge White,    George Giddings, John Skinner,  William Lord, Richard Lord, Rev. Chad [Chaddus] Brown, John Greene (John Greene the Younger, John of London, John of Wickford and John of Quidnessett), William Warriner, Jr, Deacon Samuel Wright Sr., Henry Burt Jr. Richard Hawes (Hawleys, Haworths, Hawton, Haughton, Howes), Rowland Stebbins (Stebings, Stebbing, Stibbinge, Stubing, Stubbing), John Coolidge, Bartholomew Green, Lieut. John Sanborne,  William Worcester, Nathaniel Ives, Capt. Nathaniel Merrimann, Andrew Messenger, Elizabeth Wardwell  (formerly Crowell aka Crow, Perry), Gillett, Mary Ravens Coolidge, Arthur Perry. I am currently writing an illustrated book on the history of Newtowne (Cambridge), where I reside and work. I began to do my own genealogy as part of this project, and chose wikitree because I strongly support the wikipedia model - and thinking that I might have one or two ancestors. I had no idea there were so many. I find the information here to be very well sourced and discussed, and would love to communicate with others about these families and others. I am pre-1700 certified, have signed the honor code pledge. My # is Blier-23.

Hi Suzanne, Welcome to Wikitree and thank you for your interest in the Puritan Great Migration Project. You sound as though you will be an asset to Wikitree. As a prelude to joining the Puritan Great Migration project we ask that you give us the url or Wikitree ID for a profile that you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing. Since you are a brand new member you may want to work on a profile and come back later. I'm looking for your ability to find good sourcing and to create inline citations.

Thanks! Will do.
Here is an entry  I did for Nathan Leavenworth: Leavenworth-268.
Welcome to the Puritan Great Migration Project. I always like profiles about Generals. I made a few changes to your profile, you can look in the changes tab to see what I did. I would like to invite you to the google group. Please just send a private message from my link and then I'll have your email. Thank you.
Thanks so much Anne!

I love puzzles, research--anything which requires unraveling, combing, sleuthing...and most of what I've done thus far on WikiTree has been cleaning up, adding sources, descendants, biography details when I can find them.  I just added some of that, along with in-line reference and links to children here:  Martha (Hollowell) Perry

(The Perrys are one of the family names I'm having trouble locating in Census records.)

My family has PGM on both sides--most notably, Richard Warren and John Billington, both Mayflower passengers, both 10th GG, maternal.

I would like to join the PGM project and see where I can contribute.   I would also like to determine what additional ancestors I have that fit in this category.  I am a descendent of William Collier, Collier-19.   An example of a profile I manage and have created is Lombard-11, Mercy(Lombard) Burgess.   Thank you for your consideration
