Time to start a new thread !!

Fáilte!!

The  Ireland/ Irish Roots Project co-ordinates the efforts of Wikitreers who have Irish ancestry and/or would like to improve the profiles of Irish people and the Irish diaspora on Wikitree.

If you would like to join the project we would love to have you.

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams.   We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group.

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland  for details.

The Teams and an explanation of their roles are :-

Categories Team -  If you like to organize, categorize, build a plan and see it through; This Team is for you.

Counties Team - Those interested in one area of Ireland, Province, County, Town. Includes One Place Study

Managed Profiles Team - This team works on profiles managed and protected by Irish Roots. PPP

Membership Team - This is our Administrative Team. They track new Members, Enquiries,

Profile Improvement Team -  Made up of sourcerers, arborists, connectors, biography writers, data doctors, and others,

Topics Team - Irish - Notables, Writers/poets, politicians, military, history etc

Diaspora Team  - the term Irish_Diaspora refers to groups of Irish no longer living in Ireland or not born in Ireland. i.e. United States, Australia, England, France etc.

Can you therefore let me know which Team you would like to join.  If it is the Counties Team then which County Sub Team(s) you are interested in.

Please post an answer below.

Irish Roots Project is in the process of changing its name to Ireland Project. So you may see both Irish Roots Project and the new Ireland Project at different times. If you haven't seen the revised project, check us out at Ireland Project. We also have a new Badge.

I am interested in the Alderdice family of Derriaghty Antrim especially Edward born around 1797 can you help
Hi Elizabeth, I'll have someone contact you that can assist.
Hi everyone.  I'd like to join the project--specifically the Galway & Leitrim Teams.  I've been working on the McTagues (& more recently the Kiernans) of Bawnboy Union, Leitrim.  In Galway, names of interest are Walsh, Naughton, & Conneely in Rahoon & Moycullen, & Coen, Joyce, Coffey & Dempsey in the Turloughmore area.  I've been thinking of starting a McTague one name study, but I'm not really sure what that would entail.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Melissa and Welcome to the Ireland Project and the Galway & Leitrim Teams.

If you would like to start a one name study the One Name Studies Project will help you get started. If any of the McTaque are from Ireland, make sure you tell them so they can set up an Ireland category for them. It will then show up in the Ireland one name studies

If you need any other help, feel free to send me a PM (Pricate Message}

Hello! I would love to join the Ireland project. I am not super up on Wikitree formatting but have an extensive tree elsewhere on the internet and I'm trying ;). Most of my Irish heritage comes from the Connaught, especially Sligo, Roscommon, and Galway. Surnames in my direct line include Carty/McCarthy, Donaher, Welch/Walsh, Connolly/Conneally, Gilligan/Galligan, Cannon, and McChesney. I am particularly interested in McCarthys from Sligo.
Hi, I would also like to be a part of the Ireland Project.  I have been working mainly on my family and German and Swedish roots, but need to focus a bit on my husband's family.  Names I am searching are Shea (Shay), Hanrahan, Byrnes, Burke, O'Malley, Ready and Bailey.  Counties are Limerick, Clare, Mayo and Cork.  Limerick would be a main focus.  I just finished the Profile Improvement Project so would be happy to help on that side, once I am better able to find sources.
I am a member of the County Antrim team.  How do I get the Ireland badge?
thank you but no contact yet
I would like to join and be apart of the Counties Team. I have ancestors mainly in the following counties of Mayo, Cork, Galway and Meath.

Thank you,

Kathy Thurman
Hi.  I would like to join this project.  My great grandfather was born in Ireland, Joseph A. Judge, but he immigrated to the USA afterwards.  I'd love to learn more about where he was born and when he immigrated as well as learn about his ancestors.

Dia dhaoibh!

I would like to join the Ireland Project if possible. My interests are in Irish history and in researching my family's origins in counties Waterford and Kilkenny. I'm a newcomer to genealogy but fascinated by the prospect of joining such a committed and engaged community of researchers who can help see me through to the other side!

Hi,

Just discovered about the Ireland Project!

I've already been doing some "sourcing" of Irish profiles this month, so I would like to join your "Profile Improvement Team". Also, I will gradually add the shamrock badge to all my Irish-born profiles!

My Irish ancestors are not connected directly yet to the big "Wikitree", so I am hoping that the more improvements we do to Irish profiles, the more connections we can make.

It's difficult, as the official records do not go back too far, but there are ways to connect, I am sure!!

Thank you to the managers of this Irish project for your service for all us Irish!!

Hi - I am just touching base to see where I should be consulting - I have maternal ancestors who came to Ireland at the time of Henry VIII. Surnames include Watson, Colclough and Hawtrey. I am keen to integrate my information with that of other researchers. If appropriate, I would be grateful if I could be added to the Irish group. Note, to balance out my maternal ancestors, I also have paternal Irish ancestors who were transported as convicts to Australia in the early 19th century, namely Ann Leakey (born 1811 in Kells, Meath, Ireland) and John Murphy Scully (born 1810 in Dublin).
by Bob Holbert G2G1 (1.4k points)
Hi Bob and welcome to the Ireland project, I've also added you to the Ireland Diaspora Australia - New Zealand team
Thanks Richard. I'm also part of the England group and am presently working my way through the England Group Orphan Trail. I've had a look at the Irish External Resources page, but is there an equivalent exercise to help me get across Irish resources and coordinators?

Hi Bob, The Ireland doesn't have an Orphan trail but the National Archives of Ireland has put together a self paced training at Family Research 2016 that covers all the main sources of Irish records.

There is a link to it at the top page at Space:Sources-Ireland-Province-County called Getting started in Irish Records and sources. The page also has a very large list of other sources of Irish records.

Thanks Richard - much appreciated - I will check out the links. Look forward to working with everyone!

I'd like to join the Ireland project and be part of the County Laois team.

For many years, I only knew that my paternal Grandfather came from Ireland. Older relatives who might have known more didn't share the info. Only a few years ago, following the advice of a genealogist to look at my grandfather's children (14 of them) to see if one of them would turn up information, I finally learned that he came from Rosenallis, in county Laois. I did a lot more research and then visited the town, even going from door to door. Someone eventually led me (literally... I followed his truck) to the farm in Drumnabehy townland where my grandfather was born. It was even occupied by a Poole - my surname! Part of a collateral line, but even so!

I'm very enthused about this area and I'd like to do an area study of all the Poole surnames in the general area of Rosenallis to try and figure out how they connect. Not to mention pushing back my own ancestors of course. :-)

Hi Team,

I would like to join the Ireland Project. While I have yet to positively connect a family profile to Ireland, my 35% Ireland ancestry, according to FT DNA  must count for something. I have what looks like, a dead end with my Johnston line in Scotland, which appears to account for part of this percentage.
by David Urquhart G2G6 Pilot (167k points)

Hi David and welcome to the Ireland Project and the Diaspora Team. I too have not been able to get my line back to Ireland.

Hi there! I would love to join the Ireland Project and contribute. I’m not exactly sure what I could help with in regards to the teams. I enjoy writing bios and editing to make information more detailed. But could help with anything.

My mother’s father is actually 100% Irish, confirmed via paper trail and DNA. My father’s maternal grandfather is half Irish and his maternal grandmother has a mix ancestral background.

McKibbon, Driscoll, Edwards, Perrin and Beamish.

Mills, Tennant, Lockhart, Lee, Kelly and Thompson.

Hi Payton and Welcome to the Ireland project. I added you to the Profile Improvements Team.
Oh thank you very much!! Hopefully I can be of some help for the project. Have a great day :D

I would love to be a member of the Ireland Project. I haven't connected anyone from my own tree to Ireland yet, but I've been a visitor and fell in love with the beauty of the countryside, the lovely people, and the glorious songs I heard in numerous pubs every evening. If possible I'd like to join the managed profiles team, my special interest is in improving medieval profiles.

Hi all,

I would love to formally join the Ireland Project. The Diaspora (Australia and New Zealand) team seems like a great fit for now, as my work within the Earl Grey's Famine Orphan Scheme 1848-1850 topic will create/improve profiles for about 4000 Irish emigrants to colonial Australia.

My own Irish ancestry includes surnames BARTON, CONWAY, HORE, FITZGERALD (2 separate lines), KENNEDY, McCABE, and O'SULLIVAN from Counties Kerry, Laois, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford. My wife's Irish roots includes NAGHTEN and TARTLETON from County Galway.

Cheers

John

I would like to join the Ireland project, specifically the County Cork team. My great-great-grandfather was a Coppinger from Cork, and as such I plan to research that family line primarily.

I'm going to need help with all my Ulster ancestors, probably mostly Scots, so I'd like to join. I'm good for the Bio Builders team if you need me.

Thanks!

Hi Pip and welcome to the Ireland Project and yes we could use your golden story telling. Thanks for joining the Bio Builders.

The Irish Government has put together a very good training course. You can find a link to it at the top of the page at Space:Sources-Ireland-Province-County also the Public Record office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has some good sources.

I have been trying to trace my 3rd great grandfather who according to family history is from Dublin, Ireland.  In the 1830 USA census country of origin is listed as Ireland. I would like to participate in the Ireland Project especially areas dealing with Dublin.
