WikiTree's New Netherland Settlers Project is our collaborative effort to develop and maintain high-quality genealogy information for the people of New Netherland and their descendants.

New Netherland was the 17th-century Dutch colony in eastern North America (mostly in the modern states of New York and New Jersey) controlled by the Dutch West India Company.  Many New Netherland settlers were Dutch, but quite a few of them came from other European places such as Germany, Scandinavia, France, England, Scotland, and the Mediterranean region; some were enslaved Africans; and indigenous Native Americans were part of their community. The scope of the New Netherland Settlers Project currently includes New Netherland descendants born as late as 1776, if they were part of a community where the Dutch culture of New Netherland was prevalent.

If you are interested in participating with this project, please answer this post to join us. In your answer, please tell us about why you are interested in New Netherland (include names of any specific ancestors or New Netherland surnames you are interested in) and tell us how you expect to contribute to the project.

Project members will receive the New Netherland Settlers Project badge on their profiles.

This project is only for WikiTree members. If you are not yet a member of WikiTree, please join the WikiTree community before requesting membership here. See Help:How to Use WikiTree to get started.

Also, we ask project members to:

  1. Add new_netherland to your followed tags.
  2. After you have been accepted into the project, request to join our Google Group, and include your name and Wikitree ID in your request.
  3. Add the category [[Category:New_Netherland_Settlers_Project]] including the brackets, to your biography.

If you have questions about New Netherland or the project, you may find answers on the FAQ page or the New Netherland Settlers Project page. See our advice on reliable sources on the New Netherland Settlers Reliable Sources page and see additional project resources and sourcing advice on our New Netherland Genealogy Resources category. You may even find your ancestors on our Progenitors and Immigrants of the New Netherlands Settlers (though it is quite incomplete!)

I am interested in joining the New Netherlands project. I am Landsman-55. My Grandmother was Edna Jane Van Benschoten. I found a lot of my Dutch ancestors back to the Vignes due to the efforts of many of you who traced the Van Benschoten (Bunschoten) line and the first boy born in New Netherlands. I would love to learn more and be part of this project. — L Landsman (Landsman-55)
Hello! I would like to join. My New Netherland family that I am researching currently are: Burghardt, Van Hoesen, Van Wie, Van Valkenburg, Klauw, Slingerland, Santvoord, Middaugh, Bergen, and Rapalje. I would like to contribute in helping research not only my families but others as well. I love tying things together and digging into things to solve mysteries and make connections. I am a mom, so I research in bits here and there, but I do love focusing on chunks at a time and am working hard to go back through my chart and document and re-verify everything that I have found or have been given by the previous generation of researchers in my family. I also recently found a New Netherlands connection in my husband's family. ~Sharman Rice (Lutz-3115)
Hello!  I am so excited to see this group and would love to join.  I have only recently found out that our family history reaches back this far, and I have become obsessed learning as much as I can about our roots.  My name is Julena Johnson Doudt, and my ancestors include the Crankheyte, Syboutzen, Ryder, deLint, Pieters, etc.  I have even found out that one of them was included in the 60 or so people who managed to escape the Massacre at Naarden.  (I am humbled by knowing that I would not exist if he hadn't escaped!)
Me please if you don't mind ,
Hello! I’m Laurie Cable Olsson, Cable-115. I was fascinated to discover my Dutch ancestors while researching several years ago. Some of them include Romeyn, Van Dyke, Wyckoff, Haegen, Dirckse, Janse.

I would love to collaborate with others on improving our ancestors profiles.

I am working on processing the backlog of requests that were posted as comments. [Folks: Please post your request by using the Answer this post button.]

A hearty welcome to the New Netherland Settlers project to John Diefenbach, Nathaniel Eaton, Kristin Robinson, Mitchell Wilcox.

You all have the badge now. smiley

More welcomes to new project members Jan Wink, Jared Crayk, Julena Doudt, and Laurie (Cable) Olsson. heart We look forward to your contributions.

Thank you very much, Ellen! Looking forward to participating in this project!

I'm curious to discover our family roots in the Tarrytown area. I recently discovered that my husband's family (Minnerly, Minnerlay, Minnelea, Cortelyou, Smallens) goes back to the early settlers and would love to be a part of contributing any information I can to the project. Thank you.

My name is Dennis DeGroodt and I'd like to join the New Netherland Settlers Project.  As near as I can tell, my 7th great-grandfather, Jacob Pieterszen de Groot and his wife, Grietje Jans, emigrated from Europe to New Netherlands sometime prior to 1652.  Jacob was born in the Netherlands in 1628 and Grietje was born in Germany in 1620.  Their son, Pieter Jacobszen de Groot, was born in New Amsterdam in 1653.

Hi, Kristin. Welcome to this project. It should be apparent from the number of profile managers on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Coerts-15 (the profile for Steven Coert Van Voorhees) that there are plenty of other WikiTreers who trace their ancestry to him.smiley

Welcome to WikiTree, Mark. Thanks for joining this project. Not every new project member with English ancestors in New Netherland has your awareness that some of their "Dutch" ancestors were English.

Now please get busy building out your ancestry here so you connect to those New Netherland ancestors. And please get acquainted with the naming conventions and other information on our project page, as well as the resource materials linked there.

I descend from the Van Houtens and Van Wagners. I am very interested in joining this group to learn more about my ancestry and The New Netherlands Settlers. Roeloff Cornelissen Van Houten is my 10th great grandfather. I found a book on Family Search that someone uploaded about the Van Wagners and Van Houtens which contains much information on both families, it was compiled by Stephen L Nebeker. by Jody Cleveland G2G1 (1.7k points)

Hi, Jody. Welcome to this project. smiley

I believe you have learned through experience that most of your New Netherland ancestors already have profiles, and that (due to name variations and the fuzziness of dates) it may take some creative searching to locate existing profiles in order to avoid creating duplicates. surprise Many of those existing profiles are in serious need of improvement, including (but not limited to) good sources and good biographies, so there is plenty of opportunity to pitch in and work on your ancestors' profiles.

I think that book you found probably is the same one I found at http://www.nebekerfamilyhistory.com/Files/OurDutchAncestors-VanWagnersandVanHoutens.pdf. The author seems to have done solid work, but he often relied on secondary sources (such as local histories and family genealogies), so we should consider the book an excellent starting place with information that ought to be confirmed by primary or near-primary sources (when those can be found). See the New Netherland Project Reliable Sources page and the links on that page for information on sources for New Netherland research and some places where those sources can be accessed.

My name is David Vanderpool (Vanderpool-1010).  I have been a WikiTree member for several years, and I would like to join the new, New Netherlands Settlers Project.  I was a member of the old one. My ancestors, Wijnant Gerritsz. van der Poel and Trijntje Melgerts (Rooscholt) came to Beverwijck between 1653-54.  I have affiliated lines, through marriage to De Hooges, Van Alen, Ver Plank, and Post (Poest)

David, you are still a member of the New Netherland project, and I appreciate your ongoing efforts to improve the profiles of van der Poels and others. smiley

I have many New Netherland ancestors that I have researched and look forward to participating in Wikitree in the future.  My grandmother was a Smock and some of her ancestors are Smocks, Ryker, Demarest & Demaree, Hoagland, Fonteyn, Meet, DeBaun, Wiltsie, Newkirk and many of their earlier ancestors. My grandfather's ancestors include Pittenger, Lent, Crankheyt, Wyckoff and their ancestors.  Unfortunately, when I lived in Kingston, NY about 4 blocks from the "Old Dutch Church"  I had no idea that my ancestors were founding members or that I had Dutch/Huguenot heritage!
by Elizabeth H. G2G1 (1.2k points)

Hi, Elizabeth. You are already a member of this project -- you joined in 2018!

It looks like you have been having more time for WikiTree recently (and we bumped into each other recently in colonial New England where you uncovered an error in a profile I manage for family in yours and my shared ancestry blush).

I look forward to your continued contributions to New Netherland genealogy.

PS - Have you been back to Kingston since you discovered your ancestry there?

Hi I like to join this project to be able to investigate many DNA matches I have with people with ancestors in New Netherland where I cannot pinpoint the common ancestor. I can also contribute to investigate sources in The Netherlands. My paternal ancestors come from several regions with a concentration in the Isle of Texel, north of the Dutch mainland. The man were mostly sea pilots to guide boats through the dangerous waters between Texel and the mainland or marine officers. Names in that region are Bakker, Boon, Brouwer, Keizer, Koning, Kok, Duijnker, Platvoet, Flens and Zuidewind. Another area is Zeeland in the South west part of the Dutch mainland with names like Lugtenburg, Droogendijck, Laaij and Groen. Many man were working at the Marine base in Hellevoetsluis. The naval history of this group might explain DNA connections in New Netherland. A large group of ancestors from my mothers side were people from the Palatinate in Germany that had to flee for their religion. Most of them went to the British Colonial territories in North America. I see also the name Teffer in New York historic records and in some cases these people have a Jewish background, were I have no Jewish DNA. Unfortunately I can track my direct ancestor Mattheus Teffer only to 1730 to a place called Sondra in Germany. He was a professional soldier and his ancestors may have come from Eastern Europe, were many Jewish people lived and had to flee around 1721.

Hello, My name is James (Jim) C. Hollenbeck. I am a descendent of Caspar Jacobse Hallenbeck (Hollenbeck) and Elizabeth (Lysbeth) Hoffmeyer born 1629 in Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.

I want to join the group so I can learn as much as possible about life during that era and perhaps network with others who share my interest. Who knows, I might meet more cousins!

 Jim
by Jim Hollenbeck G2G Crew (530 points)

Welcome to this project, Jim.

You will find profiles for those early ancestors at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hallenbeck-8 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hoffmeyer-63 . But you will not find "Reusel-de-Mierden" in their profiles. Although that place name appears in countless online family trees for  New Netherland people, it is a "figment of the imagination" of auto-correct functions in early genealogy software packages. Apparently, when people entered "Holland" as the place name for a birth, marriage, or death, the software "completed" the entry as "Holland, Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands," and that place name was propagated to thousands of online trees that were in turn copied by other people. "Holland" is the name of a street in the hamlet of Reusel. For more information, see How Software Errors Corrupt Our Family Trees.

Hello, my name is Kent Duryée and I'm a descendant of Joost D' Urie, as it's spelled on WikiTree. In our family documents, it's spelled Du Rieux, (family docs were created ca. 1900 so not written by Joost). I'm interested in finding out all I can about the New Holland immigrants. I've spent most of my life doing research on many subjects, so I hope to be able to help as much as I can in that respect.
