Registration is now open for our 2019 Connect-a-Thon

This is our first annual Connect-a-Thon. Our goal is to decrease the number of profiles that are not connected to our big tree by adding relatives to existing profiles.

The event will start on Friday, July 12, at 8 AM (EDT) and run until Monday, July 15, at 8 AM (EDT).

Will you join us?

To register, just click the ANSWER button and say "Sign me up!" or whatever and include a few words about your location and/or genealogical interests. This will help us assign you to a team. If you already know what team you'd like to be on, say that. The current teams are listed here. There are a few new ones and more may be added.

Could you clarify, please? Is it

a) you can add anybody to anybody

OR

b) you can add anybody to an Unconnected profile only
To add to Ros's question--how can I tell if a profile is unconnected?
Beulah,

Up in the links area, at the top of the page, there is the find link. In that list is one that says unconnected people. That gives you two tabs toward the top. It normally puts you on the ones in your watchlist. the other gives you a list of all unconnected.

My understanding (and maybe I'm wrong) has been that we are to add sourced profiles to existing profiles, with that as the emphasis, not on connecting to the greater tree.  At least, that's how I read what was said in the other thread.

The focus will be on adding family members to existing profiles. One point will be awarded for each sourced profile that is added as a relative of an existing profile (as opposed to counting connections to the global tree …)

 by Eowyn Langholf

.

and

.

It does sound extremely interesting however since it takes me an eternity to connect just one man I don't think I would be very helpful.

Hi C! Even though it's called a Connect-a-Thon, the focus is on adding profiles to existing profiles which you would definitely be helpful at! :)

.

.

If I am misunderstanding the above, then I don't know how much good I will be doing just adding family members to existing profiles.

@Melanie

But isn't that what you do daily? Add profiles?  So join the Connect-a-Thon and add (sourced) profiles to ones which are already here.  (Although I still think it should have been called Add-a-Thon.)

@ Ros .. I already signed up for team Australia aka the Wizards of Aus.

I was just saying that if I am misunderstanding what we are to do, I'm pretty much useless as I don't have anyone to connect to the greater tree.  Just people's sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters to connect to each other.  None of them, so far as I can see, will connect to the greater tree (which is the aim of the connectors project and the challenges for that project).

My understanding was that this was to be different from the challenges, but when I see other people questioning things, I start to wonder if I have the "wrong end of the stick".

You're correct, Melanie.  Even though the ultimate goal is to have more profiles that are connected, we're getting there by just adding more to the Tree. :)  Every profile added is one step closer to a connection a some point.
Thanks, Lisa.  Connecting challenges have been presented in such complicated terms (for ME to understand) that I have
never even considered trying them.  At least I now know where to look.
Also, unconnected profiles have a little yellow WikiTree-guy next to their name.

Edited to add: Thank you Ros. Now I feel special. I am having a love/hate relationship with the little yellow guy. He shows up on all new profiles I create, but then sometimes he goes away.
Only if you have the Connectors badge.  The rest of us can't see it. :(
No problem,

also, if you are on the page, go to the bottom of the page. If it has the [this person is x amount connected to ...] they are connected. If there is no connection to people like the Queen of England etc, then they are not connected.
Y'all are making it seem much more complicated than it is! Just go through your Watch List. If you have a profile in your Watch List-- say your great grandfather, who had 10 children, but only some of them have profiles. Add a sourced profile for each child who doesn't already have one. Each new, sourced, unduplicated profile is a point!
Melanie, the simple act of adding family to existing profiles truly can help make connections. Recently when I serendipitously ran across a source about the sister of a great grand-uncle of mine, I made a profile for her (using that source plus a couple of others), then I looked to see if her husband was in WikiTree. Sure enough, he was -- along with about three dozen relatives, all of them unconnected! Suffice it to say, they are connected now.
Originally I called it a profile-a-thon but I guess the admins preferred connect-a-thon. I guess technically you are connecting siblings, children, parents, etc to existing profiles. ANY profiles as long as they aren't duplicates.
Is there a badge like the other a-thons we do.

Please sign me up for the Nor'Easters!

@Linda - it says this on the Help page:
After you post, we will award you the participant badge.

@Sarah

You need to answer the question, not hit 'reply' to this comment

Sign me up for the Southern Super Sweepers.  I will give it a try.
I like to joint to, at team Flying Dutchman
Paula and Herman - you both MUST ANSWER the question and state which team you want to join.

Leaving these comments are not sufficient to get you onto a team.

Please ANSWER the question correctly.
Strange, I could have sworn I hit answer and not comment.  And please don't yell at me.
So did I Paula
You haven't yet add the badges yet.

Sign me up for The Wizards of Aus Please

Psst, R Bartlett, in order to register, scroll up and click on Answer, immediately below the question! (I'm whispering)
I am curious why I was flagged on pg 8? The gentleman said 3 times in the post he wanted to be in Legacy Heirs. I told him I would go add him. I do not know what I did wrong.
You didn't do anything wrong.  Some newer people think that the 'flag' is a way of saying 'I like this' (same as Facebook's thumbs-up) when it's just the opposite, and some people mis-hit when they are working on small phones using fat fingers.  ;)
All of a sudden, I'm confused. I am in the Western Red Cedars group - does that mean I work only on profiles from those states?

Or do I work on my own and others profiles regardless of location?

Thanks.

no, you can work on any of your own profiles as well as any in our team states...or anywhere!

Here's our team chat:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g//846566/western-red-cedars-chat-2019-connect-a-thon

Hilarious note. Tree Nuts are using a picture of Western Red Cedars as their team photo? It sure looks like one I suggested to Azure with the sun added.
Freakish coincidence since I don't know a Western Red Cedar from a hole in the ground. I just liked the sunny look.

yup. Once in awhile a coincidence will happen. Usually at random and by pure chance. laugh

At first I kept coming back here to see if anyone wanted to join my team, but now I keep coming back for the comments! It's like we have our own language! And someone used that word that looks and sounds like what it means - hilarious!

Hi everyone, it looks like there are no badges for the participants for the Connect-a-Thon, busy with a lot of things at the moment so I probably missed something cheeky, but to make sure can I tell people they don't have to wait for a badge or register again because they are still waiting for it and figure perhaps there went something wrong when they answered ?

Thanks and have fun everyone !

One last question:

Do I need to keep track of the number of profiles I connect, or is counted automatically?

Sorry, this is my first -thon.

d

Your contributions will be counted automatically. I don't think the details of how this will be done have been announced yet. I am sure there is a way to track when you create a profile which connects to an unconnected profile.

What I would really like to see (I know I am dreaming here) is when a connection is made, it is confirmed in real time, and some sort of digital fireworks go off! surprise

When you've finished adding your new profile and a source and click on SAVE, the tracker will show up at the top of the page for you to click. It will probably ask you to add a comment, such as 'added a child with a source' or 'added a spouse with a source.' Doing that will add your point to your team.

If you'd like to participate, but not sure which team, you're in luck! There are still openings on the Mid-Atlantic Team! We live here, but we connect everywhere!

Re Reports:

I have been entering connections for the past hour or so, but don't see anything yet on the reports for my team, Western Red Cedars.  Want to make sure, since it is a new team, that we are included in the report parameters.

Thanks!
I am located in NC! Can help with any group!
OMG guys, never mind! I thought it was THIS WEEKEND! So I have been entering connections all morning. :) It's not until next month!

No wonder I didn't see anything on the report - which is from the last Clean-a-Thon.

Going for more coffee now...

Animated_hurricane.gif (100×100)Brantley! Go back up and click on 'answer.' Then mention "Gulf Coast Hurricanes!"

Deborah, LOL, sounds like something I've done! At least you're getting some practice in! Now enjoy that coffee!
Also my first connnect-a-thon. i am new to the site and still learning navigation. Excited to be part of the team.
Thank You!!!!!! Genealogy for Dummies... I finally get it.
Don't feel bad Deborah. I thought the Clean-A-Thon started a week or two early. I made the same mistake. Figured I was a little early in the day (not by weeks) getting on it :)
I've been able to connect lots of profiles while cleaning up merges.   Sometimes you can volunteer to be the profile manager AND you can be a "sourcerer at the same time, so you can be helpful in 3 or 4 different ways by looking for connections- I found a new family branch (Hendrick) going back to the 1600s this weekend in the process!
I had a question from my team. I think I know but want to be sure before I go back and tell them. Does it have to be connected to an existing profile? If you find a group that is not in yet, can you add them anyway for it to count or only to existing profiles?
At least one profile has to be on WT already.  Take a look at Mindy's fabulous tutorial page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Connect-a-Thon_Tutorial
Thank you Ros
Added the link to the info tab although it duplicated most of the sourcing tutorial.

ONE HUGE CLARIFICATION

I know many of us will be adding siblings and children from census data. And I know the easy solution is if you have the census link for say the father, to just copy it to all the children. The problem is technically that is a source for the father with mention of the child. If you click the child's name IN that source it will often give you the source for the child for you to use. Not as fast I know, but much more accurate and proper.

(also, as long as the profile is open, feel free to orphan it so a family member can adopt it if you aren't going to maintain it yourself)

Very good point, Steven! Make the profile about that individual, not someone else. You can always right click and open individual record from that census in new tab and still keep working with that same census without hunting.
My only comment about the census citations is that I consider a census record to be about the family, not the individual. So I always link to the head of household's record, even when I originally found it via another individual in the family. There's really nothing wrong with doing it either way!
I'd like to join, via team Germany Genies - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Germany_Genies
Sarah, you have to go back up and click on answer, not
a comment.  Then you will be enrolled on the team you choose.  Sarah, ignore my answer.  I see your name on the
German Genies already enrolled.
I don't have a team to join but I would love to participate if I may.

@ Rene .. you need to click on answer so Eowyn can find you to give you the badge smiley .. .. .. ..

So does that look like I harass. I have decided that it is better not to harass and decided also to change and mellow out.
It was a joke.
Sorry I am kind of sensitive. People with the syndrome that I have which is Prader - Willi are sensitive and plus they use to die when they were 12 but now there are very few adults my age from 50 - 60. I will be 60 on September 19th and the syndrome is consider a rare diease for one reason is because we are born with it it deals with our genes and chromesones also. So I feel very luck and as an ambassador for the syndrome because of my age and I think God has let me live this long to help take care of parents and to represent people with the syndrome that we can do things for others and God.

I tend to forget not everyone understands humour the way the person presenting it does.  Not even a smile is necessarily universal.

The 19th September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.  You should go around sayin "Arrr" all day!  I am so glad you get to celebrate another birthday.  smiley

Linda Barnett

I know of others with this syndrome who have lived much more than 12. I have an aunt of my Grandmother, who was put in an institution aged 36 and was there for the next 27 years. Was not known as Prada-willie at that time but a congenital Thyroid condition, that I found is now known as Prada-willi.  Unfortunately I have not been able to find out a lot about her. 27 years in an institution and there were 2 lines written about her, admitted such and such a date, and died!
Carmel the syndrome I have is spelled Prader - Willi. That is how you spell it. I was saying they used to live till 12 but now with the medical advances they live longer very few of us as lived pass 70 years old I think but there are not a lot of us at that age and your aunt lived to be 63 and that is just 3 year older than me when I turn 60 on September 19 and they recommend people with this syndrome to live with some one but I just move up to my sister old house in November 9 of last year and it almost been a year I am doing pretty good.
replied instead of answered, not sure how to delete, please ignore :p
Ignored.  Sarah is officially entered now on a team
Oh good! The hullaballoo is this weekend!
If I join what exactly will I be doing.  I believe all my ancestors have already been added.
maybe your ancestors are added but how about everyone of their descendants? Your great grandfather's daughter's 9 children from 2 husbands might be missing. Then there are the pieces of branches not connected to the tree. Parents, spouses, siblings, and children need to be filled in to allow more connections.

Yes, I'd like to participate. First marathon for me and looking for a team! I live in the Madison, Wisconsin area. Let's connect some profiles!

Isaac, you need to go back to the top of the page, click on the ANSWER spot at the end of Eowyn's paragraph and then you can be registered.  Pick a team at the same time if you have one in mind.
Fixed thanks!
Why is the registration closed ahead of the event? I just read about this and have over 300.000 people in my tree so I could be a good contributor. Disappointed.
Because we need a day to finalize the teams and send out information to the participants. Sorry you missed the deadline!
Sad but admins need time to add everyone to event reporting & Team captains need time to contact new teammates and add them to their team pages. We're all volunteers!

But we hope you can join us in the fall for our next weekend event!

I'll be participating as a co-captain of Team Tree Nuts!
by Eowyn Walker G2G Astronaut (2.5m points)
Hey, Eowyn --

Sign me up for the Tree Nuts this time around. I've been working on connecting profiles from a category I created. I thought Mid-Atlantic might be the closest match, but my category has people from a wider array of geography. Therefore, Tree Nuts probably is the best fit.

I'm doing it anyhow, so I might as well join the team.

I would like to join TEAM VIRGINIA!!! I'm a lifelong residentof Virginia and work heavily on about 15 common old-line Virginia surnames, most particularly in the Roanoke, Charlottesville and Richmond areas. I have nearly 11K contributions and LOVE genealogy! My main focus at the moment is expanding upon the large Wells-Shumate-Stanley-Philpott connections in Henry County, as well as continued addition onto my paternal lines in, mostly, Floyd and Fluvanna counties. Surnames Rhodes, Smith, Weeks, Hylton, Harman, Sutphin, Shelor, Quesenberry and Creasy, in particular...what next?
@Michelle, you need to post an answer, not a comment, to join the Connect-a-Thon.

Hi Michelle,

We're really excited to have you on Team Virginia! If you could scroll up to the main post and click on 'Answer' with your response Eowyn will be able to award you a badge.
