Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was born on 13 Feb 1699 in Little Compton, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was the son of Thomas Brownell and Esther (Taber) Brownell.[1][2]

He married about 1730 a daughter of Peleg Tripp. Peleg's will dated 1753, names among others son-in-law Joseph Brownell (named executor), grandsons Robert Brownell, Peleg Brownell and Jeremiah Brownell and granddaughter Sarah Peckham. The children named by Peleg Tripp would be children of Joseph by his first marriage.[1][3]

Joseph married again in Dartmouth 6 March 1755 Experience Gifford,[4] born in Dartmough 21 August 1715, died after 10 June 1769, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Tompkins) Gifford.[1]

21 April 1753, Joseph Brownell, of Dartmouth, yeoman, sold land to his son Robert Brownell.[1]

20 May 1762, Joseph, now of Little Compton, sold land to his son Jeremiah. This parcel of land was given to Joseph by his father in law Peleg Tripp.[1]

He died after 10 Jun 1769 (date of will) and before 6 April 1733 (will proved) in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island.[1]

His will is dated 10 June 1769 and proved on 6 April 1773 in Little Compton, Rhode Island. He named his wife Experience and the children listed below.[5] His inventory was also taken on 6 April 1773.[5]

Children

Children of Joseph Brownell named in his will in this order:
The first four were the grandchildren of Peleg Tripp.

Research Notes

The above wives, ____ Tripp and Experience, are named by the Mayflower Society. Two wives members of the Society of Friends married a Joseph son of Thomas and Esther. They could fit. They were both deceased in the right time frame to allow for the next wife, and they had respectively three children and one child (Hannah), which nicely fits the four children who were not children of the first wife.

He married Leah Caton [/Laton/Lawton], daughter of George and Mary of Dartmouth, on 3d 4m 1736 [3 Jun 1736].[6][7] Leah's father, George, wrote his will in 1750, indicating that daughter Leah Brownell was deceased. He left her three children (names not specified) £10 each.[8]

He married Hannah Bowdish, daughter of William and Mercy Bowdish of Dartmouth, on 24d 12m 1747/8 [24 Feb 1748].[9][10] Hannah's father, William, in his will written in 1750 made a bequest "unto my grand Daughter Hannah Brownell Daughter of Joseph Brownell When of Seven years old" [11]

Would one of the project members or another interested party be interested in doing an update based on Mark Wentling's article in the Mayflower Descendant? He's very generously posted the article publicly, see the link in the comments below.

My corrections to the five wives of this Joseph Brownell and the mothers of his eight children were recently published in “Joseph Brownell (1699-ca.1773) of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and Little Compton, Rhode Island: Corrections to the Identities of His Wives and Children,” Mayflower Descendant, 71 (Summer 2023): 132-163. It corrects the account in Wood’s Mayflower Families: Cooke. Supporting evidence is cited in the article. I hope this is helpful.

Excellent news, Mark. Thank you for the update and advisement. Is the article by chance available online somewhere? (Asking just in hopes ... ;)

Superb! Thanks for your work on this family, Mark. We'll see if we can get an update done here soon.

I propose to switch the father of the Joseph attached here to his correct father:

Brownell-257

While this Joseph did name a son Joseph in his will, that son is not the one attached here. Indeed, the one attached here is attached to the mother Ruth Cornell, who was not one of the wives of this Joseph. Joseph and Ruth Cornell recorded children in Portsmouth, and they are not the same children as those mentioned in the will of this man (not to mention the fact that Joseph and Ruth Cornell recorded a child in 1736, after the birth of this Joseph's son Robert).

You had me confused for a bit, thinking you meant the father of Joseph (Brownell-452) subject of the profile. But ... You want to remove the son Joseph-256 and place him in the family of Brownell-257, which sounds right. If that's what you're proposing go ahead. Thank you.

Yes, that is what I meant. I just made the switch. This profile is now incomplete, missing a link to the known child Joseph.

Thank you, I've fixed the non-link. The profile needs a re-do anyway.

Brownell-452 and Brownell-1003 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that Don Sage Jr added a duplicate on 27 March 2018 and thus to correct the tree the two individuals need to be merge.
