On 13 June 1768, David and Elizabeth Crocket of Frederick Co, VA, sold to Robert Watt of Cumberland Co, PA, for 100 pounds, 352 acres patented 7 Sept 1756 to (should be from) Jonas and Elizabeth Hedges, within four miles of Watkins Ferry. The land was surveyed in April 1752, and a grant was dated 14 Nov 1754, for 352 acres about four miles from Watkins Ferry, on both sides of the Wagon Road, surveyed by John Mauzy, adjoining Major Carlisle. 6 Dec. 1750 - Hugh (x) Miller sold to "Robt Elder, waver of the county." Land between James Nail & Danl Kennedy. Two years ago I registered a DNA test with 23andMe. I discovered a couple of names on the list, predicted as 1st or 2nd cousin, which I didn't recognize. My father also submitted a test to prove the relationship. Once we had completed that process I started diving more deeply into DNA connections. I noticed something interesting between my father and this cousin. They were showing 0.8% and 0.9%, respectively, ancestry from Sub-Saharan Africa--more specifically, from the region around Nigeria and the Congo. And then, after doing a 2nd DNA test on Ancestry, I noticed another cousin of my father, who also showed 1% DNA from the same region. So, somewhere in our ancestry there was a person, who was full-blooded African. But how far back?

Assuming that one gets roughly half their DNA from each parent, you would need to go back 7 generations to arrive at DNA contributions from 128 different people. This would give you about 0.8% DNA contribution from each person.

Ancestry has a unique feature known as "Thru-Lines" which will show you exactly how you are related to other people through a common ancestor. So I began looking at all my Thru-Lines to find all the people connected to me, on that site. I was looking specifically for anyone also showing something close to 1% DNA match to Sub-Saharan Africa, to learn where the common link was. I eventually ended up finding FIVE people on that site (unfortunately, Ancestry does not show anything smaller than 1%, because I believe I would have found more relatives showing this DNA pattern). But all FIVE people I found with this DNA match, were all connected to the Thru-Line of Robert Crockett, my ancestor who is the son of David "the Elder".

This David is my father's 5th Great-grandfather (7 generations removed). As we know, there is only 1 reason why an African would be living in America in the 1700's. I believe David was either the child of white man and his slave, or his female partner, who gave birth to Robert, was a slave.

If David, himself was the son of a slave, it might explain why his parents are unknown. When he moved to the settlement now known as Rogersville, Tennessee, he was one of the first people of European descent to set foot in that area. That area was reportedly first settled in 1767, and he died there, just a decade later. Why did he end up there? Is it because there were no other white people in that area, who might question his half-black appearance, and think he was a runaway slave? Or, perhaps he fell in love with a slave girl from a nearby plantation, and they decided to escape, and runaway somewhere no one would ever find them. We know almost nothing about David's origins, his parents, nor even what year he was born (I've seen everything from 1727 to 1730 cited). He apparently never told anyone where he came from--a secret he took to his grave.

I'd be curious to know if there are any other known descendants of this David, who have taken a DNA test elsewhere, which shows trace amounts (less than 1%) of African ancestry. My test on 23andMe suggests 0.2%. All the people showing 1% or more would likely be over age 70 by now (my father is 71), and would have to be no more than 7 generations removed from David.

Once done, I would strongly recommend contacting the US History project to obtain project-protection of the profile in order to prevent reconnection. Thank you to all who participated in the discussion!
