Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Samuel (Gaulding) Gauldin was a Virginia colonist.

Samuel Gaulden[1] was the son of John Gaulding and Anne Stuart. He lived in St. Peter's Parish, Upper Precinct, New Kent County Virginia.[2] There are also references to him living or at least owning land in Bedford County Virginia[3] and [4].

Dr. Charles Gaulden in his ...Seven Hundred Year Study states, "Notice that Samuel Gaulden is listed as a 'Perhaps' [child of John and Anne Gaulding of New Kent County, Virginia]...Working backward from Samuel's known birthday, 1752, I can only guess that Samuel's parents were John and Anne Gaulden. This from the absence of other Gauldings who can fit the parent role. Others have reached a similar conclusion"[5]

According to Gayle King Blankenship, in Blankenship Ancestors, states, that Samuel Gaulding was an orphan. "Goochland Oct. 1742 Court: 'Ordered that Churchwardens of St. James Parish do bind Saml. Gauling, and Orhan boy, to Thos. Edwards, a carpenter.'[6] This make sense as he would have been 7 or 8 when his father John passed.

Samuel Goulden's [sic] will, dated 06 Oct 1785 in Campbell County, Virginia, mentions children Archibald, William, Kesiah, Ann E., Lucy and Patty. [7]

He passed away about 1785.

Research Notes

Much discussion about Samuel being a son of John Gaulding and Mary Anne Stuart based on her age at the time of his birth. With a birthdate of approximately 1680 she would have been at least 50 at the time of this birth.

Gauldin-117 and Gaulding-26 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and death dates and locations, same wife, same child
