Research Notes

"Isaac Hill died in Chowan Precinct in 1710. In his will, he names sons: Michael, John and Isack, Nathaniel and daughter Martha--no surname given--: executor Robert West. Witnesses were William Maule, Edward Bryan and Hohn Hale. (recorded in Bk. 1712-1722, p 34). In the will, he suggests that his sons John and Isack should "go and live near their sister Martha." (Archives, Raleigh). This indicates that the Bryan brothers had come into North Carolina by 1710.

Later, in May 1741 William Bush 92-4), son of Martha Bush, deeded land to Isaac Hill (Jr.) "now in possession of Isaac Hill, " and John Hill was a witness of another deed, showing that he also lived in the neighborhood of the Bushes. If Martha was Martha Hill, she was much older than brothers John and Isaac."[2]

Deed Book C, page 65 Martha Bush to Mary Bush Sept 13, 1728 ” for love and affection I bear unto Mary Bush my daughter in law late wife of my son John Bush dec’d and my five grandchildren. . .Elizabeth, John, Mary, Hardy, and Isaac Bush . . .the one half of all my goods and chattles and personal estate whatsoever. . .to be equally divided among the mother and children. . .” Wit: Nich. Fairless, John Bryan. NC Court Sept. 14, 1728.[3]

This Martha Hill is not the daughter of Nicholas Hill and Sylvestra Bennett. Martha, daughter of Nicholas and Sylvestra, married John Best (died bef 1695). This is established from the nuncupative will of "Martha Best, wife of John Best then deceased. Leg. Mr. Luke Haveild and his heirs. Proved by her mother, Mrs. Silvestra Hill, widow, John Jennings and wife Mary [sister of Martha] who relinquishes her right to Dr. Luke Haveild of Chuckatuck. October 20, 1695." Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1647-1800. Ancestry Sharing Image, Page 4

This Martha (Hill) Bush needs to be unlinked as daughter of Nicholas and Sylvestra Hill and her correct parents located.

Where is this will located? I would like to review it.

If you click on the link in my original post, it will take you to a free view of the abstract on ancestry.com. You can also link to it in a Google version of the book at https://books.google.com/books?id=nPqggJYvy3oC&q=best#v=snippet&q=best&f=false. I have not found a copy of the full will online, only the abstract.
I found the will in Isle of Wight, VA Deed Book 1, Page 148-149. It can be found on Family Search. It is very difficult to read but I was able to read where her mother was named Sylvestra Hill and Husband John Best. I will remove Nicholas Hill and Sylvestra Bennet as parents.

Could you give me a link to the will? I haven't been able to find it.
How do we know that this Martha (Hill) Bush (1654-1728) is perhaps a conflation with a different Martha Hill? In the research notes on this profile, it mentions her father Isaac Hill, but we don't have enough information to say who Martha's husband was from any sources.

FamilySearch shows daughter Martha (Hill) Best (1667-1695) daughter of Nicholas Hill and Silvestra Bennett married to John Best. No real sources substantiate either Martha Hill, but clearly others and the Research Notes question if she is attached to the correct parents: the attached Martha has an altogether different profile from FamilySearch.

Any leads on Martha that would tie her to the parents and to her husband?

Thanks!

Will of Martha (Hill) Best located proving she was daughter of Silvestra Hill, not Martha (Hill) Bush. See Comment above.
I'm confused. Her parents are connected as f Nicholas Hill and Sylvestra (Bennett) Hill but the info in her bio refers to the will of Isaac Hill. I've seen Isaac and Mary Percy / Piersey listed on a couple of other sites as Martha's parents but on one of those Mary's husband is Thomas Hill rather than Isaac Hill. So that's a total of 3 differing combinations I've seen for this Martha's parents but none of them have convincing documentation other than the reference to the will of Isaac Hill.

Can anyone help clarify all this for me? Thanks for any additional information.
