Research Notes

Researchers do not agree whether his wife was Judith SIPES or WILSON; "relict Judith" is named as his widow; also said to have been married to Cynthia TASSENS. "Kessinger Kousins" by Patricia and Richard Guy Rhodes p. 9 gives Judith Wilson as first wife, m. 1756, and possibly SIPES as second wife. In 1760 Matthias was administrator of estate of Andrew Kessinger in Lancaster Co., PA, leaving personalty of $840.69. He was naturalized 11 Sep 1765 in Frederick Co., MD. In 1774 was granted 100 acres on Greenbrier River, presently Summers or Monroe Co., W. Va. In 1774 he served as a non-military patriot in the American Revolution. Family History Library file shows wife as Cynthia TASSENS, b. 1731. In 1765 obtained a land warrant in Frederick Co., MD; he is listed on 1787 tax list of Greenbrier Co., VA. See History of Monroe Co p. 366 by Oren F. Morton (own copy).

Interesting comment, Gregory. The DAR would require further proof.

"In 1774 he served as a non-military patriot in the American Revolution... " AND "Among the soldiers was an old Dutch man of the name of Kishioner and his son Andrew, who, when the battle commenced hid themselves in drift wood under the banks of the Ohio..." Curious. There appears to be a contradiction here. I wonder what GGGGGGrandpa was doing at Point Pleasant if not engaged in the effort? He didn't likely stop by to talk about the weather. If Rev. Hayes has reported correctly, and the "old Dutch man" was a soldier (along with his son), then one would think he deserves to be recognized as a "military," rather than non-military, patriot. A DAR update might be considered?
