Husband @I17057@. Wife @I17055@. Marriage 1775[13] Marriage 1774 Albermarle County, Virginia, United States. [14][15] Marriage of KY. [16][17]
Captain John Martin was promoted from Major to Captain for his heroism during Tarleton's raid. He married Elizabeth Lewis in 1775. He was the son of Captain Thomas Martin and Ann Moorman and the grandson of John Martin who married Letitia ____. He was the son-in-law of old David Lewis[18]
Major John Martin was an officer in the American Revolution and having removed from Albemarle, Virginia, where he was born in 1745 or 1749 to Kentucky in what is now Jessamine, in 1784, and then finally settling down in Clark County in 1788 where he lived for the rest of his life. He was 5 foot 10 inches, strong muscular frame 200 pounds with a florid complexion, with red hair, blue eyes, and a very fair skin. He was a cousin to William Clark, who accompanied Meriwether Lewis on the Oregon Trail, as well as first cousin to General George Rogers Clark [19]
Note: This is a third John Martin who appears in Albemarle Co. beginning in 1749 and served in the Revolution in the Charlottesville area, who is sometimes mistaken for the earlier two John Martins. [20]
This profile is for the John Martin, Gent (1683-1756), of King & Queen and King William Counties who married Letitia Lewis 's grandson John Martin (1745-1837) who married Elizabeth Lewis. This profile was formerly attached to Abram Martin and Rebecca Bell, as a brother to John Martin, his grandfather, and was sort of collapsed as the two people. As of 3/14/2021 I am working toward sorting out this family line that is attached to the family found in The Compendium of American Genealogy VII p. 182.[21]
This is all very confusing information that needs to be better researched, none of it makes sense because of all the collapsing that has occurred with this particular profile. I didn't want to erase it until all the information is properly accounted for, as in John Martin and Letitia Lewis' are mentioned several times, who were this John Martin's grandparents, but certainly is confusing here.
John Martin and Letitia Lewis's children were: [22]
John Martin survived his wife and was staying at his son Abram/Abraham Martin's plantation, 13 Jun 1755, during a period of illness, according to his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Marshall Martin's letter to her brother, Thomas Marshall. At the time, Abram Martin was with Col. Washington at Fort Duquesne. [28]
It is assumed that the record below refers to John Martin, Jr. (1710-1787), son of John Martin and Letitia Lewis, because both Col. John Martin of Caroline Co. and John Martin, Gent. of King William Co., were dead by 1778:
This John Martin was formerly listed being born in 1683 New Kent, Virginia, with error 404 links as sources at rootsweb. This John Martin was assumed to be his grandfather, and his grandmother was collapsed into his wife, to form a made up Elizabeth Letitia Lewis. This John Martin is Well Documented in connection to Elizabeth, daughter of David Lewis, and being the son of Captain Thomas Martin, grandson of John Martin, and likely Letitia.
The documentation of Tarleton's Raid reveals the Martin and Lewis connections, which are numerous. These Martins were connected also to Maryland, and Ninian Beall, as well as this John Martin being first cousin to Lewis of Lewis and Clark. He died in Clark County, Kentucky named after his first cousin, General George Rogers Clark.
This profile is the reincarnation of Martin-5099 which was erroneously merged into Martain-7 which was merged into Martain-2.

~~~~~ "Major John Martin (son of Thomas Martin & Ann Moorman), married in 1775 Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of David Lewis, of Albermarle county, Va. He was born 1748, in Albemarle county, Va; was a Captain, and was promoted to Major at the siege of York; stayed in Virginia during the Revolutionary War, and in 1784 moved to Kentucky; he was the first sheriff in Clarke county, and was afterwards for many years one of the judges of the court of Quarter Sessions in Clarke county; he was a farmer and died in Clarke county in 1837; he was 5 feet 10 inches high, strong muscular frame, weighting about 200 lb, florid complexion, red hair, blue eyes, and very fair skin. He was a man of great energy. About 1798 he professed religion and joined the Methodist E. Church, of which he continued a zealous and consistent member."
John and Elizabeth had eight children: 1. THOMAS - died single 2. MARY ANN (named in father's will) - 1st husband John W. Buckner - 2nd husband Col Richard "Hoping Dick" Taylor 3. JOHN LEWIS (named in father's will) - 1st wife Helen Bullit - 2nd wife Catherine Blanton 4. JAMES TAYLOR - died single 5. GEORGE MADISON - died single 6. ROBERT BROOKS (named in father's will) - 1st wife Susanah Pearson - 2nd wife Elizabeth Nicholas - 3rd wife _____Wood - 4th wife Mary Polly Crutcher 7. DR. SAMUEL D. (named in father's will) - Elizabeth W. Taylor 8. ELIZABETH CATHERINE - Nathaniel Pendleton Taylor
Major John Martin's will was written and signed by him in 4 Feb 1836. The will of Major John Martin, deceased, was filed in Clarke County December Court 1837.
Major John Martin does not have the middle name "Grumby" in any documents that I have found to date. If you have a source please share.
Elizabeth Lewis was the daughter of David Lewis and his 3rd wife Mary McGrath, thought to have been the widow of a Dr. Hart of Philadelphia. Elizabeth is named in her father's will. She doesn't have a middle name of "McGrath" in any document that I have found to date. Elizabeth did have an aunt named Elizabeth McGrath. Elizabeth McGrath was her mother's sister, her 1st husband was John Lewis (maybe the brother of her father David Lewis), her 2nd husband was James Taylor III.
According to Dr. Samuel D. Martin he did not have brothers named Andrew or Gideon. I have yet to find sources to prove such a claim, but I do have numerous documents to disprove the assertion.
James Taylor Martin was a full brother to Dr. Samuel D. Martin. As stated above, their mother Elizabeth Lewis had an aunt, Elizabeth McGrath, whose 2nd husband was James Taylor III. So it seems that he was named after his mother's uncle, James Taylor III. James was the 4th child, he died young, never married, and has no known descendants. There is no documentation to indicate that either John Martin or Elizabeth Lewis had a 2nd wife or husband.
In his 6th and last tour of duty, at "the Seige of York", John Martin was promoted from Captain to Major. He served in the regiment commanded by Col. Richardson, and according to his pension testimony he "was promoted to the command of a Battalion...". His pension was granted, and his number is S.30563.
Thomas Martin and Ann Moorman are my 5th great grandparents. Their son Major John Martin & Elizabeth Lewis are my 4th great grandparents. Major John Martin is my primary DAR Ancestor. DAR #A074355 Major John Martin was promoted to Major at Yorktown for his bravery. He is the father of Dr. Samuel D. Martin, author of "Genealogical Record of the Martin Family". Dr. Samuel D. Martin and Elizabeth Taylor are my 3rd great grandparents.
