Thomas Mifflin was an American merchant, soldier, and politician from Pennsylvania, who is regarded as a Founding Father of the United States for his roles during and after the American Revolution.
Thomas Mifflin, Pennsylvania's first governor under the Constitution of 1790, was born in Philadelphia January 10, 1744, the oldest son of John and Elizabeth (Bagnell) Mifflin, a prosperous merchant family and early Quaker settlers.
Served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. Washington from June 19[18] to August 14, 1775, when he was promoted to Quartermaster General. [1]
Mifflin graduated from the College of Philadelphia in 1760, worked for Philadelphia merchant William Coleman, and married Sarah Morris on March 4, 1765.
Though he was born into a Quaker family, he served in the Continental Army. He was President of Pennsylvania until the Commonwealth passed its Constitution on 21 December 1790, when he became its first Governor.
Although wealthy most of his life, creditors descended on Mifflin in 1799 forced him to leave Philadelphia. Mifflin was a lavish spender and financially took a toll on the once wealthy businessman. By the end of his life Mifflin's finances were so unsettled that he had to be buried at state expense.
Thomas Mifflin is buried in the cemetery of the German Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
