Biography of Catherine SCHIRCK LESSER of 1848

Catherine Schirck was born on her parent's farm on Yankee Bush Hill, in Conewango Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob Schirck and his wife Catherine Schuler on June 30 in 1848. She is one year old on the 1850 United States Federal Census for Conewango, Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, but in reality was probably almost two years old.

Catherine Schirck was one of several siblings:

  1. Catherine Schirck, I, born about 1844, who died in infancy.
  2. Jacob Schirck, III, born August 1845, who enlisted in the Pennsylvania 10th Infantry Reserves was killed at Second Bull Run on or about August 30, 1862 at Manasass, Virginia.
  3. Mary Margaret Schirck who married Louis Werle.
  4. Phillip Schirck who enlisted in the 111th Pennsylvania Infantry, survived the Civil War and married Amelia Reig, and passed away August 24, 1924.
  5. Mathias Schirck, born August 24, 1846 and married Anna Baker on July 3, 1873.
  6. Catherine Schirck, II, born June 30, 1848, who married Civil War POW survivor Lawrence Lesser and had many children, and passed away about November 1929 at the age of 81 years old.
  7. Mary M. Schirck, born November 14, 1850 who married William Yeagle and moved to Russell, Pennsylvania.
  8. Carrie B. Schirck, born May 20, 1853, who married Clayton Cheney, was widowed, and remarried to Fenton B. Hayward.

Jacob Schirck lost her father Jacob Schirck in 1856. She was only eight years old.

Catherine Schirck lost her brother Jacob Schirck, III in the United States Civil War Battle of Second Bull Run on August 30, 1862.

Catherine Schirck married Laurent "Lawrence" Lesser on May 27, 1866 in Warren, Pennsylvania.

Catherine Schirck and Lawrence Lesser had at six daughters and two sons:

  1. Rosania C. Lesser, born March 31, 1861
  2. Edwin Baldwin Lesser, born December 1866
  3. Carrie Mary Maude Lesser, born September 19, 1870
  4. Alice C. Lesser, born December 4, 1872
  5. Estella A. Lesser, born November 28, 1874
  6. Harrison Clayton Warren Lesser, born November 1877
  7. Cora Mae Lesser, born September 12, 1879
  8. [Lesser-56|Lavinna Lenora Lesser]], born September 19, 1882

The Lesser Family moved around every few years. They lived in New York when Alice and Estella were born in 1872 and 1874 respectively, but returned to Warren, Pennsylvania eventually.

Catherine Schirck passed away in December 17, 1929 at the age of 81 years old, about two months after the Stock Market Crash of October 1929 that started the Great Depression.
