[Note: Newbury Births include both Benjamin and John, sons of John, both born Sept. 12, 1642. Son John is noted as CTR, which usually means from the Essex Quarterly Court Records. Don't know if that was a transcription error in that source, the only reference I found was that Anthony Somersby reported Benjamin b. 1642, as son of John and Elizabeth in relation to the estate?]
John Lowell, the son of Percival and Rebecca Lowell, was baptized on October 11, 1604, at Portbury, Somerset, England. [1]John Lowle, 11 Oct 1604, son of Percivall, mother's name not given. [2]
On February 17, 1619, John was apprenticed to Richard Baugh, glover of Bristol. As he would have been about 14 years of age to be apprenticed, his birth is estimated. [3]
1619: February 17: Apprenticed to Richard Baugh. [3]
1637: September 7: John took on Richard Dole as his own apprentice for a seven year term. [3]
1639: He with his wife, children and parents, set sail for New England and settled at Newbury, Massachusetts Bay. [3][4] It is thought they came on the ship Jonathan.
1641: June 2: Sworn a freeman at Newbury. [3][5][6]
1641: December 10: Appointed clerk of the writs by the General Court. [3]
1642: January 29 [29:1:1642]: Served as trial juror at Ipswich Quarterly Court. [7][3]
1643/4: Elected as Newbury's town deputy to the General Court. [3]
1645: May 14: Appointed as commissioner/local justice to end small causes. [3]
1647: May 26: Appointed again as commissioner/local justice to end small causes. [7][3]
John Lowle's will was written June 29, 1647; proved October 27, 1647. In it he left bequests to:
his wife Elizabeth
daughter Mary Lowle
sons Peter, James and Joseph Lowle
his children by his second wife Elizabeth, Benjamin and Elizabeth Lowle
Executors: William Gerrish, Richard Lowle, John Sanders, Richard Knight and Nicholas Noice. [9][10]
He married first, possibly Mary ___, who died shortly after their arrival and settlement at Newbury, Massachusetts. Their son Joseph was born at Newbury in November, 1639. [3]
He married secondly, after his first wife's death and by 1642, Elizabeth Goodale. [3] Elizabeth Goodale was likely born at Downham or Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, the daughter of John and the widow Elizabeth (nee Parlett/Taylor) Goodale. [11][12] She was baptized on June 5, 1614, at Yarmouth. [12][13][11][12]
Elizabeth and her widowed mother came to New England after 1637, but by about 1640, when they were of Newbury. [12]
Her will was made on March 1, 1650, proved September 30, 1751. She left bequests to:
my sister Tappine
three sons-in law, Jno. Lowle, James and Joseph
son Benjamin
daughter Elizabeth
Her instructions included that her brother Thomas Millerd, keep her son Benjamin and his estate until he 'goes forth to be an apprentice'.
Overseers to be Thomas Millerd, Richard Lowle, Abraham Tappine, and William Gerrish.
If my son or daughter die before coming of age, then their portion(s) be divided between my husbands children: Jno. Lowle & James and Ben (sic), & Mary and Peter Lowle. [9][3]
