Biography

European Aristocracy
Robert Corbet was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Name

  • Robert /Corbet/ Lord Caus
  • Robert (III) Cawley refers to him as Robert (III) to distinguish him from other Roberts. [1]

1158 Birth and Parentage

Son of Simon Corbet [1]

He was born before 1158. The 1175/76 Pipe Roll records “Robertus Corbet” in Shropshire[2804]. Cawley notes that as this represents his earliest appearance in the Pipe Rolls, it is likely that he had recently attained his majority and taken control of his lands in his own name. It is unlikely therefore that Robert [III] was born later than [1158]. [1]

Cawley cites Eyton as providing "details which confirm Robert’s parentage: in litigation with Herbert FitzPeter in 1236, Robert’s son Thomas alleged that his grandfather ("avus") had been seised of the manor of Pontesbury during the reign of King Henry II [1]

Carl Boyer believed that Simon Corbet "probably died before his father, William Corbet of Wattlesborough. Assuming that William died in 1136, and Simon died shortly before, say, 1135, all of Simon's children would have been born prior to 1135. [2]

1176 Trespassed Royal Forest

Robert Corbet, who in 1176 was amerced 20 merks for trespassing on the royal forests. [3]

1180 Possible Marriage to Emma de Pantolph

Cawley reports that "The name of Robert’s wife is not known." [1] However, Ralph Prior reports that in 1180 Robert Corbet married Emma de Pantolph, born 1162, in Wem, Shropshire.[4]

Alternatively, the marriage took place on 25 March 1180 in St. Julian's Church, Shrewsbury. [4] This would make Robert aged 22 and Emma, 18.

Barons of Caus

Robert Corbet succeeded his uncle, Roger Corbet II, as Baron of Caus. [3]

Robert was the fifth of nine barons of Caus. The relationships between some of them are not completely clear:

  1. Roger Fitz Corbet, First Baron of Caus
  2. William Corbet, son of Roger, Baron of Caus
  3. Ebrard Corbet, brother of William, Baron of Caus
  4. Roger Corbet, who may be the son of William, Baron of Caus
  5. Robert Corbet, son of Roger, Baron of Caus or perhaps Simon
  6. Thomas Corbet, son of Robert, Baron of Caus
  7. Peter Corbet, son of Thomas, Baron of Caus
  8. Peter Corbet, son of Peter, Baron of Caus
  9. John Corbet, brother of Peter, Last Baron of Caus

1189 Seige of Acre

At Seige of Acre Richard Coeur de Lion...with him, as we may remember, went Robert the Baron of Caus. He had welcomed the return of the long lost borther, Thomas the Pilgrim, had done what justice and brotherly affection demanded, given the position and th lands asked for, to the Pilgrim and his posterity; and then, filled with the prevailing enthusiasm, ahd, as related in Volume I, himself joined the glittering hoses of Coeur de Lion and set out for the east. [5]

Not at Seige of Acre It has been stated, that this man fought by the side of King Richard at the seige of Acre; such, however, is not the fact, and it may be accepted as a general truth, that a lord-marcher usually had his hands full enough at home, without requiring to go so far as Palestine to find scope for his valour. [3]

1190 Forest of Tenefrestances

Eyton quotes (in translation) a charter dated 24 Jan 1190 under which King Richard I restored "to Robert Corbet…the forest of Tenefrestanes…as Roger patruus of the said Robert had held in the time of King Henry, the grantor’s father" [1]

1194 Scutage

Scutage payments by "Robertus Corbet" are recorded in 1194/5 and 1196/7.[1]

1204 Safe Passage for (future?) Son in Law

A letter from King John, dated August 10, 1204, informs Wenunwin de Kevelloc (as he is there called) that the king has apointed Hugh Pantulf and Robert Corbet to ensure him a safe conduct if he comes to a court shortly to be held at Woodstock. [6]

1208 Agreement between King John and Gwenwynwyn

Robert Corbet and Hugh Pantulf, with William Fitzalan, were witnesses to a convention, dated at Shrewsbury o October the 7th, 1208, between King John and Wenhunwin, which is mentioned hereafter; and Corbet seems to have acted in some measure of surety for the Welsh prince on this occasion. [6]

abt 1208 Daughter Margaret's Marriage to Gwenwynwyn

Bridgeman states that Wenunwin’s wife was Robert Corbet’s daughter, and Hugh Pantulf was probably the lady’s maternal relative. [6]

She married Gwenwynwyn ap Owain, Prince of Powys. He was born in 1151 or 1165. The marriage took place in 1212 or 1216. [7]

Antiquities of Shropshire states that Gwenwynwyn's wife, Margaret, was the daughter of Robert Corbet, lord of Caus. [8]

On the other hand, Antiquities notes, some accounts state she was the daughter of Lord Rhys of South Wales. [8] Gwenwyn married Margred ferch Rhys, b. Abt 1151, Carmarthenshire, Wales (incomplete reference: penrose10792)

Bridgeman notes that Wenwynwyn de Kevelioc, the son of Owen, early In the Welsh Chronicle Owen Cyveilioc is called the son in law of the Lord Rhys ap Griffith of South Wales, whose daughter he may have married for his second wife, or she may possibly have been the mother of his illegitimate son, Caswallion. This Caswallion was in the king’s service in 1196, and in the following year received from the crown the custody of Stretton Castle, succeeding the sheriff of Shropshire in that office. [9]

Wenunwin de Kevelloc, Prince of Powis, married Robert Corbet's daughter. [3]

1210 Knights Fees

The Red Book of the Exchequer records "Robertus Corbet" holding five knights’ fees in Shropshire in [1210/12][2807]. [1]

1217 Restoration of Caus

Henry III King of England ordered that "castrum de Caos", confiscated from "Robertus [Corbet]", be restored to him after "Thomas filius suus" swore homage to the king dated [Nov] 1217[2808]. [1]

1219 Ordered to Inquire into State of Forests

Henry III King of England ordered "…Robertus Corbet vel Thomas filius suus…" to enquire into the state of the forests "de comitatu Salopie" dated [Jul] 1219[2809]. [1]

1222 Death

He died between 22 July 1219 and 17 October 1222. [1]

Robert Corbet gave liberally to the monks of Shrewsbury and Buildwas Abbey; and, died in 1222. [3]

Issue

Not all sources agree on the same number of children. Five are listed below with their sources. Cawley [1] lists for of them, Thomas, Hugh, Robert and Mary (Margaret). Augusta Corbet in a pedigree shows five children, Thomas, Hugh, Robert, William and Margaret, to be children of Robert, Baron of Caus, who died 1222, and his wife Emma Pantolph. [10]

Birth year estimation for children. While the source is weak, a marriage dater of 1180 exists for Robert and his possible wife Emma. Robert would have been aged 22 at the time, which makes the marriage year reasonable. In the absence of other data to estimate marriages, assume as the birth order the order in which Cawley lists the children. Assume that if there were also sons William and Alan, they were born last.

  1. Thomas Corbet, Estimated birth year 1182. One of four children, Thomas, Hugh, Robert, Mary, listed by Cawley. Died before 2 November 1274. THOMAS [I] Corbet (-before 2 Nov 1274). "…Thomas, Hugh and Robert the grantor’s sons…" witnessed an undated charter under which Robert Corbet donated tithes to Shrewsbury abbey[2810]. Henry III King of England ordered that "castrum de Caos", confiscated from "Robertus [Corbet]", be restored to him after "Thomas filius suus" swore homage to the king dated [Nov] 1217[2811]. Henry III King of England ordered "…Robertus Corbet vel Thomas filius suus…" to enquire into the state of the forests "de comitatu Salopie" dated [Jul] 1219[2812]. "Thomas Corbet, son and heir of Robert Corbet" made a fine for "his relief of the lands that Robert held of the king in chief" in Shropshire, dated 17 Oct 1222[2813]. "Thomas Corbet" was granted "the forest of Teynfrestanes", granted by King Richard to "Robert Corbet his father", dated 10 Jan 1236[2814]. Thomas Corbet "son of Robert Corbet...Lord of Caures" donated the tenth of lead produced in Schelve Mine to Shrewsbury abbey by charter dated 24 Feb 1270[2815]. Inquisitions dated "Tuesday after St Luke 2 Edw I" following the death of "Thomas Corbeth" name “Peter his son is his next heir”[2816]. The chronology of his father’s life suggests that Thomas must have been well over 80 years old when he died. m ([1225/28]) as her second husband, ISABEL de Vautort, widow of ALAN de Dunstanville, daughter of ROGER de Vautort of Harberton, Devon & his wife ---. A charter dated 1 Jul 1241 records a final settlement between "Gilbertum de Basevil" and "Alanum Bassat" relating to land in Bepton, Sussex and land in Cornwall "quam Isabella que fuit uxor predicti Alani de Dunstanvill tenet in dotem" which was inherited by Gilbert from "Alani de Dunstanvill avunculi predictorum Gilberti et Alani"[2817]. Her family origin and second marriage are confirmed by inquisitions dated "24 Oct 27 Edw I" following the death of "Hawis late the wife of Reginald de Valle Torta" which name “Peter Corbet aged 30 and more and Henry de la Pomerey aged 32 are next heirs of the inheritance of the said Reginald”[2818]. Thomas [I] & his wife had three children:

    1. a) PIERS [I] Corbet (-1300 before 10 Aug). A writ after the death of "Beatrice late the wife of Peter Corbet of Caus", dated "30 Aug 21 Edw III", names "Thomas Corbet…from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter and Emma the younger", that "Peter" inherited, and after his death "Peter his son" who married "the aforesaid Beatrice" who devised the manor of Bynweston to "one John Corbet"[2819]. Inquisitions dated "Tuesday after St Luke 2 Edw I" following the death of "Thomas Corbeth" name “Peter his son is his next heir”[2820]. He was summoned to Parliament in 1295 whereby he is held to have become Lord Corbet. Inquisitions dated "24 Oct 27 Edw I", following the death of "Hawis late the wife of Reginald de Valle Torta", name “Peter Corbet aged 30 and more and Henry de la Pomerey aged 32 are next heirs of the inheritance of the said Reginald”[2821]. The age of Piers Corbet in this document is puzzling: either it is an error or the document refers to Piers [II], in which case Piers [I] would have resigned the inheritance in favour of his son. Inquisitions following a writ dated "10 Aug 28 Edw I", after the death of "Peter Corbet of Caus", name “Peter his son, aged 30 and more (is his next heir)”, name “Peter his son and heir and Beatrice his wife”, and also record that the deceased “had a firstborn son named Thomas, who by his father’s will espoused Joan daughter of Alan Plukenet and died without heir himself” and gave dower to her “at the feast of St. Martin 23 Edw I” after her husband died[2822]. m firstly (1253 or before) JOAN de Mortimer, daughter of RALPH [II] de Mortimer & his wife Gwladus of Wales. m secondly ALICE, daughter of --- (-after 1315). Piers [I] & his first wife had two children:
      1. i) THOMAS [II] Corbet (-before 11 Nov 1295). Martin 23 Edw I” after her husband died[2823]. m JOAN Plugenet, daughter of ALAN Plugenet & his wife ---. Martin 23 Edw I” after her husband died[2824].
      2. ii) PIERS [II] Corbet ([1269/70]-before 29 Jan 1322). A writ after the death of "Beatrice late the wife of Peter Corbet of Caus", dated "30 Aug 21 Edw III", names "Thomas Corbet…from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter and Emma the younger", that "Peter" inherited, and after his death "Peter his son" who married "the aforesaid Beatrice" who devised the manor of Bynweston to "one John Corbet"[2825]. Inquisitions following a writ dated "10 Aug 28 Edw I", after the death of "Peter Corbet of Caus", name “Peter his son, aged 30 and more (is his next heir)”[2826]. m (3 May 1298) as her first husband, BEATRICE de Beauchamp, daughter of JOHN de Beauchamp of Hatch, Somerset & his wife Cecily de Vivonne (-before Oct 1347). She married secondly John de Leyburn Lord Leyburn. A writ after the death of "Beatrice late the wife of Peter Corbet of Caus", dated "30 Aug 21 Edw III", names "Thomas Corbet…from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter and Emma the younger", that "Peter" inherited, and after his death "Peter his son" who married "the aforesaid Beatrice" who devised the manor of Bynweston to "one John Corbet"[2827]. Inquisitions following a writ dated "10 Aug 28 Edw I", after the death of "Peter Corbet of Caus", name “Peter his son, aged 30 and more (is his next heir)”, and name “Peter his son and heir and Beatrice his wife”[2828].

Piers & his second wife had [two] children:

      1. iii) JOHN Corbet (25 Mar 1298-before 1347).
      2. iv) [ALICE Corbet . A manuscript relating to Ranton Priory, Staffordshire records that “Johanni de Harecourt” married secondly “Aliciam filiam domini Petri Corbet de Caus” after the death of his first wife[2829]. Both the chronology and her name suggest that Alice may have been born from her father’s second marriage. A writ dated 2 May "4 Edw III" and inquisitions 18 May “4 Edw III”, after the death of "John de Harecurt", do not name his widow[2830], suggesting that she may have predeceased her husband. m as his second wife, JOHN de Harcourt, son of RICHARD [II] de Harcourt & his first wife Margaret Beke (-before 2 May 1330).]
    1. b) ALICE Corbet . A writ after the death of "Beatrice late the wife of Peter Corbet of Caus", dated "30 Aug 21 Edw III", names "Thomas Corbet…from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter and Emma the younger", that "Alice" married "Robert de Staff[ord]" and "from them issued Nicholas who was her heir" and "from him came Edmund who had issue the present Ralph de Staff[ord]"[2831]. m as his first wife, ROBERT de Stafford, son of HERVEY Bagot de Stafford & his wife Pernell de Ferrers (-before 4 Jun 1261).
    2. c) EMMA Corbet . A writ after the death of "Beatrice late the wife of Peter Corbet of Caus", dated "30 Aug 21 Edw III", names "Thomas Corbet…from whom issued Peter, Alice the elder daughter and Emma the younger", that "from Emma issued one Walter" who "had issue one Brian…and from him issued Margaret his firstborn and Elizabeth the younger", that "Margaret is espoused to Robert de Harleys and…Elizabeth to Edmund de Cornubia"[2832]. m BRIAN de Brampton, son of ---.
