John Hathaway was born on 17 September 1653 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony, the son of Arthur and Sarah (Cooke) Hathaway. [1][2]
He married first to Joanna Pope on 15 March 1682/3 in Dartmouth, Plymouth Colony,[3] probably the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Jenney) Pope. Joanna was born possibly in Plymouth before 1667 and died in Dartmouth on 25 December 1695.[2]
John married, as his second wife, Patience Hunnewell on 29 September 1696 in Dartmouth, (then) Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[3] She was probably the daughter of Captain Richard and Elizabeth (Stover) Hunnewell born about 1674 in Scarboro, (now) Maine. Patience died after 11 July 1732 when she was named in her husband's will of that date.[4]
John died in Dartmouth between 11 July and 15 August 1732, the dates his will was written and proved.[4] The will of John Hathaway of Dartmouth, yeoman, named his wife Patience; sons John, Jonathan, Richard, Honiwell, Abiah, Benjamin, James, Ebenezer and Arthur Hathaway; daughters Sarah Cannon, Joannah Blackwell, Mary Duglas, Hannah Bomer, Patience Peckham and Elesebeth Hathaway. Based on receipts in the file in 1733, daughter Joannah was wife of Nathaniel Blackwell, Sarah was wife of John Cannon, Patience was wife of Reuben Peckham, Mary was wife of George Dugles, Hannah Boomer's receipt did not name a husband.[5][6]
