Biography

Anthony Newhall was born in Sherington, Buckinghamshire around 1605.[citation needed]

Brothers[1] Anthony and Thomas New(h)all appeared in Lynn in 1638. Anthony, according to Savage, was earlier in Salem.[2] Proof of the relationship is found in a deposition in 1683 when his nephew, Thomas Newhall, aged about 50, testified on 10 November 1683, that two lots of 30 acres each were laid out "unto my Unkle Anthony Newhall and my Father Thomas" which were undivided, and "the said Lotts are now lying in the Township of Redding."[3]

They died in Lynn, Anthony on 31 January 1656/7 and Thomas on 25 May 1674.[4]

He was married twice prior to emigrating to Massachusetts. His first wife Mary (Unknown) was buried at Sherington, "Mary Newall wife of Anthony buryed 7 of June [1631]."[1] The Anne Newhall previously thought to be issue of this union has now been proved to be a daughter of a Henry Newhall and not Anthony. Whether there were any children from his first marriage is unknown. Cooper's 1990 TAG article transcribes a Sherington Bishop's Transcript (D/A/T 157) as "Anne newall the daughter of A[n]thony newall baptized the 8th of Januarye 1620[/1]."[2] This was corrected later in another article, to "Anne newall the daughter of henry [not Anthony] newall baptized the 8th of Jannarye 1620."[1]

He married, second, Mary White on November 6, 1631 at Olney, Buckinghamshire, England,[5] or November 6, 1632 as given in another source.[6]

Their first child named Mary was baptized on November 17, 1633 at Sherington. Their only son John was born around 1635 (age at death) probably at Sherington, but unrecorded. He and his family emigrated by 1637 and he participated in the land division at Lynn in 1638.[7][8]

Estate

Anthony Newhall of Lynn made his will on 14 January 1656[/7] in which he named his granchildren Richard Hood, Elizabeth Hood; daughter Mary [Hood]; son John Newhall; (son John had no children at the writing of the will). Nathanell Kertland and Mathew Farrington and John Fuller to be overseers of his will. He signed the will by his "A" mark. The will was proved on 31 March 1657. His inventory was taken on 6:12:1656 (06 February 1656/7) and sworn to by Richard Hood.[9]

Children

Children of Anthony and Mary (White) Newhall:[8]
  1. Mary bp. November 17, 1633 at Sherington,[1] d. February 14, 1726 at Lynn, Massachusetts; m. about 1652 at Lynn to Richard son of John and Elizabeth (Beard) Hood. [10]
  2. John b. about 1634 probably at Sherington, d. January 6, 1726 ae. 92; m. about 1656 at Lynn to Elizabeth Normanton [11]

Research notes

Uncertain Parents: A prior version of the profile, without source, identified John Newhall and Mary Jane Farrington as his parents. Proof is still lacking.

He was a brother to Thomas Newhall Sr. (abt.1594-1674) per reliable sources: TAG 66 (1991):9, TEG 17 (1997):215, TAG 65 (1990):66.

The only issue I have with this is that I'm not finding anything that states what 'document' provides the relationship. The TAG articles say they were brothers, but ... how do we know that? And, more importantly, what is the proof that the supposed father John Newhall (abt.1557-abt.1605) is the right man? I can't find anything that calls them brothers, nor is there a record of birth for either one found to date.

Update: I found a mention of a deposition where nephew Thomas Newhall named his father as Thomas and his "unkle" as Anthony. So we have proof of the relationship. Now ... what's the proof of their father's name? I've marked the relationship as uncertain pending proof.

I'm wondering if it's time to remove the supposed parents due to lack of evidence.

My records indicate a different John Newhall as the father of Anthony. I am showing that Anthony's father was born in 1580 in Olney, England, not 1557 and his mother isn't Mary Jane Farrington. Does anyone have any sources to prove the relationship as given here?
