He died on 10 February 1868 in Marylebone, London, England. [4][5] Lewis left a will dated 1 April 1863 and added a Codicil dated 13 September 1864. The Will was proved at London on 7 March 1868 in which the Executors named were his sons Henry Hamer and James Magnus Gideon, his wife's brother Samuel Magnus, his sons in law John William Bovell and Robert Alexander Loudon.[6]
Note: Conjecture: Why did Lewis change his surname to Gideon - in St. Helena the Solomon's set up the firm of "Solomon, Moss, Gideon & Co." during the early history of the Island. Saul Solomon started the first "Press" on the Island and subsequent other businesses. It is probable that Lewis worked in the family business either managing or running the business under the name of "Gideon". At their birth, all his children were given the surname of Gideon rather than Solomon.

I haven't read the family archives blog and I'm not familiar with Jewish protocol but I think it should be noted that in 1815, Lewis was working for the Honourable East India Company as a 'Clock and Instrument Cleaner in the Mechanics and Pensioners Department'. On 29 Sep 1818 he married Julia under the name Lewis Gideon Solomon in the St James Anglican Church but only 10 months later he was using the surname Gideon when he baptised his first child Henry, also in the Anglican Church. Is it possible that the name change was in relation to an Anglican/Jewish conflict in protocol and an attempt to avoid religious problems for his children? Also, I believe there is another child - Emma Rachel Gideon bn 1 Apr 1842 to Merchant, Louis Gideon and wife Julia and baptised 9 Apr 1842 at St Paul's on Saint Helena.
The Solomon brothers moved to St. Helena Island & opened a successful import business. About this time Lewis changed his surname to his middle name, Gideon, to differentiate himself from his brothers. He started a watchmaking business.
