Biography

Magdalene (or Magdalena) of Saxony was a princess of Saxony, and consort Electress of Brandenburg following her marriage.

Magdelene was born 7 March 1507 at Schloss Dresden, the youngest surviving daughter of Georg, Herzog zu Sachsen in Meissen, and his wife, Barbara Jagiellonka, Princess of Poland.^[1] For more about her ancestors see the Wikipedia article

She married at Schloss Dresden, on 6 November 1524, Joachim II von Brandenburg, Kurfürst von Brandenburg in 1499 and became Kurprinzessin (Electoral Princess) von Brandenburg. He was the son of Joachim I, Kurfürst von Brandenburg and his wife, Elisabeth van Danmark, and was born 9 January 1505.^[2]

They had seven children who held the title Markgraf or Markgräfin von Brandenburg;^[3]

1. Johann Georg, born 11 September 1525, who succeeded his father as Kurfürst;
2. Barbara, born 10 August 1527, died 12 January 1595 Schloss Brieg, having married 15 February 1545, Schloss Berlin, Georg II, Herzog von Liegnitz und Brieg (born 18 July 1523, died 17 May 1586);
3. Elisabeth, born 1528, died young 20 August 1529;
4. Friedrich, born 12 December 1530 in Schloss Berlin, entered the church and became Bischof von Havelberg 1548, Erzbischof (Archbishop) von Magdeburg 1551, Administrator of Halberstadt 1552, he died at Halberstadt 2 October 1552, and was buried 11 October 1552 in the Halberstadt Cathedral;
5. Albrecht, born circa 1532, twin with the following, died young circa 1532;
6. Georg, born circa 1532, twin with the preceding, died young circa 1532;
7. Paul, born and died between 20 and 28 January 1534.

Magdalene, died either in childbirth or of the effects of childbirth^[4] between 20 and 28 January 1534 and was buried in Berlin Cathedral (Dom).^[5], ^[6]

Joachim married secondly on 1 September 1535 at Schloss Krakow, Jadwiga (in German Hedwig) Jagiellonka, Princess of Poland; who was Magdalene's niece.^[7]
