Joseph Sears was a United Empire Loyalist. UEL Status:Proven Date: Undated
Joseph Sears was born in 1746 in Morrisania, Westchester Co., NY. Some sources incorrectly claim Yarmouth, MA, as his birthplace.[1]
He was a Loyalist.[2]
According to the "Appendix of Other Families of Sears ... so far (as of 1890) not certainly identified..." in The Descendants of Richard Sares (Sears) of Yarmouth, Mass. 1638-1888,[3], Joseph Sears "was b. about 1746, on Long Island, or in Morrisania, N.Y., (accounts differ,) was probably a grandson of Wm. and Eliz. Sears of Boston who were m. there, Mar. 12, 1710-11; he was a farmer in Morrisania; served in the British Army during the Revolution; was wounded in the shoulder, and carried the bullet to his grave. His farm was confiscated and he exiled to New Brunswick, where he had granted him a large tract of land in Sackville. He was a hard-working and successful farmer, and d. 1846, ae. 99 yrs. 7 mos. License for Joseph Sears and Hester Wheaton to marry was granted N.Y., Apr. 20, 1780."[4]
Further to May, Joseph married Hester Wheaton on April 20, 1780 in New York.[5][6] In July 1783, Joseph, his wife Hester and their three children left New York on the ship "Thetis", destined for Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia, along with 85 other Loyalist families, for a total of 246 men, women and children (including Hester's father and siblings and their families). Two years later, in 1785, Joseph was granted 500 acres of land.[7] In 1808 Joseph Sears was granted a further 350 acres of land in Sackville, New Brunswick.[8]
Joseph died at Sackville, New Brunswick in 1846 at the age of 99 years and 7 months. Joseph is buried in Sackville Rural Cemetery, Sackville Parish, Westmorland Co., New Brunswick.[9]

May, Samuel. The Descendants of Richard Sares (Sears) of Yarmouth, Mass., 1638-1888[3] Page 615 (Joel Munsell's Sons, 1890) shows approx birth date, m. license to Hester Wheaton on 20 Apr 1780, lists 12 children, d. ae 99 y, 7 ms in 1846 presumably in Sackville where he was a farmer. May later struck through this note and added notes- Was probably a gr-son of Wm and Eliz Sears of Boston, who were married there Mar. 12, 1710/1711. He was a farmer in Morrisania, NY, served in the British Army during the Revolution; was wounded in the shoulder and carried the bullet to his grave. His farm was confiscated and he was exiled to New Brunswick, where he was granted a large tract of land in Sackville.
May's handwritten note about Joseph reads, "Joseph Sears and James Sears were of the 27 proprietors of Horseneck, now Greenwich, Conn., in 1672, but as neither name appears in subsequent lists, they, perhaps never resided there or removed or died." May continues "As Horseneck is but a few miles from Morrisania, N.Y., it is possible that Joseph the Loyalist, of that place may have been a descendant of one of them, or he may derive from Joseph Sears, who was b. Boston, Nov. 28, 1711." (see p. 618)

To the managers and all "that help make Wikitree get better each day." Two items 1.) Suffix UEL - United Empire Loyalist. Is UEL a proper suffix or commonly used is any circles ? Understand United Empire Loyalist being talked about in the bio ...but used with profile name....humm ? Not an important item for certain, but if not known or never used this way ? your thoughts 2.) Question: Is Stu Ward's question about Geroge complete? I know of many mistakes in Family Seach ( whicjh I do like and use) .....But George has no source nor any mention anywhere ! I forward 1 small vote for cutting George loss. warm regards 'this note will self destruct in 30 days' Greg
I guess the reason for using UEL is to distinguish him from the progenitors of about 100 other Sears families. He is the first known of this line. As for George - I also suggest removing him from this family. Johanna??
Great reply. Thank you, This is a very well done profile which took a lot of work. I thought the UEL was confusing as a title of the profile. 'Almost' looks like a last name with the absents of a dash or comma? I agree whole heatedly Joseph deserves to be singled out. I'm still a novice and wished I had made a profile as nice as this one. As long as the Wikitree (and Google) computer(s) understand UEL is not a name but an acronym, your reply is perfect. Concerning cutting George away from this family - now we have two votes. All is well here. I'm not that guy to give him the axe ........:) Greg
I don't see any evidence that George and William are children of Joseph and Hester. Can we pin this down? They are not listed as children of Joseph Sears-833 (UAE)

The Joseph Sears who married Hester Wheaton and died in Sackville, New Brunswick was not born in Yarmouth. See Joseph Sears-833 for the actual Joseph who m. Hester Wheaton. Sears-833 has the references to Y-DNA proof that this Joseph is not from Cape Cod (Barnstable, Mass.)

Ray, there seems to be a lot of issues with all these new profiles. The all need to be merged with NONE of the new information and then there can be detail analysis done if required.
Sears-5941 and Sears-833 do not represent the same person because: We proved last summer through Y-DNA testing for the Sears DNA Project at FTDNA.com that the Joseph Sears 0833 is I-M253 and the Joseph Sears 5941 is haplogroup R-M269. They are two different people. Joseph Sears 0833 born Morrisania, NY has no date of birth other than the year 1746.
Sears-5941 and Sears-833 appear to represent the same person because: This is a duplicate of Sears-833 with the issue that the birth location of Sears-5941 is incorrect. There is no source provided for the birthplace of Joseph Sears-5941- Sears-833 provides details that he was born in Morrisania, New York.
There is now a DNA profile for this lineage posted at the Sears DNA project of Family Tree. Based upon this profile, this lineage is not related to the Richard Sears of Boston tree or any known DNA Sears lineage. It does however have genetic cousins that track to Maryland (where there was a distinct Sears lineage) and then back to England.
Joseph Sears/Ruth Merrick have been removed as Joseph's parents. Y-DNA testing has revealed that Joseph's descendants are Haplogroup I-M253/I-L205.1. Male descendants of Richard Sares, the Pilgrim, of Yarmouth, MA, are R-M269. Joseph is not a descendant of Richard Sares.
I just spoke with Dennis Sears - who categorically states there is no connection between this Joseph Sears and the parents mentioned here- Joseph and Ruth Sears. If only we could get one of these contemporary Sears men to do Y-DNA test then we would have "proof?" I think until we have a better source we should remove this Joseph Sears UE as a child of Joseph Sears II and Ruth Merrick. Dennis indicates neither he nor his son are interested in doing a Y-DNA test. I can provide Dennis's line to this Joseph if someone is interested.

There may have been a William but no dates are available. He's mentioned in the text here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sears-833

I don't understand your logic with this not being the same person.
