Biography

Robert of Stafford or "de Tosny" was a major Norman landholder under William the Conqueror, as was his brother Ralf. A cousin who was also named Robert also appears as a major tenant-in-chief in Domesday Book. They continued to also maintain lordships in France, Ralf being the lord of the main family holdings there.

Robert served as sheriff of Staffordshire around 1072-1085.

Domesday holdings in 1086:

Continental origins. The Toeni (Tosny, Todeny, etc) family is from modern Tosny (postcode 27700, commune Les Trois Lacs) which is a bend of the river Seine, near the famous Chateau Gaillard.

Marriage. In a much later account, which should be considered to have very uncertain value, she is named as Alice de Clare. See her profile.

Children. Most certainly we only know one son:

  • Nicholas de Stafford.

More speculatively, another son is often proposed:

  • Nigel de Stafford.

Death and burial. He was lying ill as a monk at Evesham abbey in 1088, and is presumed to have died soon after and been buried there. He had been a benefactor to Evesham in 1072.

Andrew, can you link to the G2G thread where you (and others) thrashed out a workplan for the refactoring of these conflated profiles? That process may be educational.

Note that this is now the Stafford profile, so Belvoir material is being removed.

Splitting will be complicated. I will try to set up a plan on G2G.

It seems everyone agrees that this profile needs splitting? Clearly the text and illustrations need adjustment also. Any opposition?

Suggestion: Disconnect from parents and make a new profile for the Stafford Robert.

This article seems to be mostly about the Belvoir Robert, whose parentage seems uncertain (See not only Peter Stewart, but also the cautious tone in Keats-Rohan).

For now I have placed the barony of Belvoir on this profile.

Keats-Rohan, Domesday People, pp.380-381 also distinguishes Robert de Todeni of Belvoir and Robert de Todeni of Stafford. She thinks they were probably related. She makes the one in Stafford the brother of Ralph, and she suggests that both Roberts had fathers named Roger. I think article should be trimmed quite a bit?

The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy states that this Robert (Toeni-30), father of Adelisa, Berenger, Geoffrey, Albreda, Guillaume & Agnes, and his brother, Berenger, and sister, Berthe, are of unknown parentage. He should probably be detached from Roger and Stephanie. You can find Robert & his siblings under the name de Tosny at the www.fmg.ac website. Also, Nigel & Nicholas de Stafford probably aren’t his children since Robert de Stafford is a separate person.
The Medieval Lands Project also says that Robert of Belvoir was a different person than, and possibly the uncle of, Robert de Stafford.

Robert de Todeni, Lord of Belvoir, was not the same person as Robert de Stafford (formerly de Toeni). Different parents, wife, children and lordships. See, eg, https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=iSfQAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA15
